Most moles are not a health threat, but facial moles can have a cosmetic effect. It is also difficult to treat moles on the face because some treatments will leave scars. Professional medical treatment is the safest and most secure method if you want to get rid of moles permanently. On the other hand, you can also try some safe (though untested) home remedies to get rid of moles without leaving a scar on your face.

Recognize the different types of moles. Before you want to get rid of a mole, you need to know the different types of moles and their symptoms. Some moles can be safely removed, others cannot.

  • Atypical Moles – Atypical moles or unusual moles can be disturbing in color and size. [2] X Trusted Source American Academy of Dermatpogy Go to source The size of an abnormal mole may be larger than the tip of a marker, oddly shaped, or colorful. If the mole falls into this category, you should see your doctor to make sure it’s not cancerous.
  • Congenital Moles – These moles are present since you were born. About 1 in 100 people are born with a birthmark. Congenital moles vary in size, and can be as small as the tip of a nail or larger than the eraser attached to the tip of a pencil. Doctors suspect that people with congenital moles have a high risk of skin cancer. [3] X Trusted Source American Academy of Dermatpogy Go to Source
  • Spitz Mole – This mole is pink, raised on the skin, and dome-shaped. This type of mole resembles a malignant (skin cancer) mole, which may ooze blood or fluid. Spitz moles are uncommon and mostly benign. [4] X Research Sources
  • Acquired Moles – This term refers to moles that appear after birth, commonly known as common moles.

Identify the symptoms of a malignant mole (skin cancer). The common way is to memorize the “ABCD” rule. [5] X Trusted Source National Cancer Institute Go to Source If you suspect a mole is malignant, see your doctor immediately.

  • Asymmetry – An irregular mole or two different moles in shape, size, or color.
  • Irregular Border – The mole has an irregular, jagged, and uneven border.
  • Cpor (Irregular Color) – The mole has multiple patches of color, including black, brown, blue, or light brown.
  • Diameter (Diameter) – The mole is large in diameter, usually about 0.5 cm.
  • Evpving – Moles gradually change shape, size and/or color over weeks or months.

Remove moles. Moles on the face can be removed by surgical excision. The dermatologist will either shave or remove it, depending on the nature of the mole. [6] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

  • If the mole is small and mostly on the surface of the skin, the doctor will proceed to scrape it off. First, the doctor will numb the skin and then use a sterilized scalpel to cut around and below the mole. No stitches are required after surgery, but after healing, there will be flat scars on the skin (various colors). Scars may or may not be as obvious as the original mole. [7] X Trusted Source Go Ask Alice Go to Source
  • If the mole is flat or has cells deep into the skin, the doctor will proceed to remove it. In this procedure, the mole and the edges of the unaffected skin are removed with a scalpel or sharp instrument. After surgery, you’ll have stitches, and the procedure can leave a scar in the form of a thin, translucent line. However, because of scarring, excision is not preferred for facial moles.

Ask your doctor about mole freezing. This procedure is also known as “cryosurgery” therapy. Your doctor will spray or wipe a small amount of cold, liquid nitrogen directly onto the mole. Liquid nitrogen is so cold that it destroys the cells of the mole. [8] X Research Sources

  • Usually, this therapy leaves small blisters at the site of the mole. The blister will heal on its own in a few days to a few weeks.
  • After the blister heals, there may or may not be a faint scar on the skin. Even if a scar is left, the scar is much lighter and less visible than the original mole. Therefore, this is the method you should consider for moles on your face.

Find out if it’s possible to burn a mole. A dermatologist may use a laser or try a procedure called “electrosurgery” to burn off the mole.

  • During laser surgery, your doctor will use a small, specialized laser to target the mole. When the laser heats the mole tissue, the tissue breaks down and the cells die. After burning, small blisters may appear on the skin that heal on their own and may or may not leave scars. Note that laser treatments are not recommended for deep facial moles because lasers usually do not penetrate deep enough into the skin.
  • In electrosurgery, the doctor uses a scalpel to scrape off the top of the mole, then uses an electric needle to destroy the tissue underneath. An electric current passes through the wire of the electric needle, heating the needle and burning the skin above it. Repeated electrosurgery may be needed to remove the mole completely. This method does not seem to leave scars, so it is worth considering if you have moles on your face.

Acid treatment. Specialized mild acids can help remove moles. You can try prescription or over-the-counter mild acids.

  • Always follow the directions on the product label to avoid damaging the skin around the mole. The general rule is to apply the acid directly to the mole, avoiding contact with unaffected skin.
  • Salicylic acid is a common acid used to treat moles.
  • Acid products can be in the form of lotions, liquids, sticks, pads, or creams.
  • Sometimes acidic products can remove moles completely, but milder products only fade moles.

Learn about well-known herbal treatments. The only herbal treatment that is occasionally used by dermatologists is BIO-T. This solution is applied directly to the mole. After that, the mole will be bandaged and the BIO-T will work on its own. Moles may disappear after about 5 days.

  • This treatment is gentle and leaves almost no scarring so it’s worth considering for facial moles.
  • The usefulness of this method is still debated in the medical community, so your dermatologist may or may not recommend it for you. If your doctor doesn’t mention it, you can try asking your doctor for advice.

Understand the limits and risks of home ingredients. Most home remedies are based on personal experience and there is little (or very little) medical evidence for their effectiveness. Furthermore, home remedies have the potential to lead to permanent facial damage, scarring, or discoloration. You should talk to your doctor before trying to use ingredients at home.

Use garlic. The enzymes in garlic are believed to help dissolve moles by breaking down the clusters of cells that make up moles. Garlic can lighten the pigmentation of a mole and can even remove it completely in some cases.

  • Cut a thin slice of garlic and apply it directly on the mole. Use gauze to fix garlic slices. You can apply this method 2 times a day for 2-7 days or until the mole disappears.
  • Another way is to crush garlic cloves with a food processor until a paste is formed. Dab the mixture on the mole on the face and cover it with a gauze bandage. Leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning. Do this for up to a week.

Apply the juice on the mole. There are different types of vegetable juices that you can apply to your moles. [9] X Research Source Usually, some acidic or astringent element in the juice can attack the cells of a mole, causing the mole to fade and even disappear.

  • Apply sour apple juice to the mole 3 times daily for up to 3 weeks.
  • Dab onion juice on the mole 2-4 times daily for 2-4 weeks. Wash off the mole after 40 minutes.
  • Apply pineapple juice on the mole and leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning. Or you can cut the pineapple into thin slices to apply directly on the mole. Do this every night for a few weeks.
  • Grind coriander leaves into a juice and then apply the juice directly to the mole. Wait for the juice to dry and then rinse. Repeat once daily for several weeks.
  • Mix grilled pomegranate with lemon juice in a ratio of 1:1 to make a paste. Apply the mixture on the mole, cover it with a gauze bandage and leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning. Do this for a week.

Try apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is very mild and naturally acidic. Similar to over-the-counter acid products, apple cider vinegar can gradually burn away the mole’s cells until the cells die off and disappear.

  • Use warm water to wash the mole for about 15-20 minutes for the skin to become softer.
  • Dip a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar. Apply apple cider vinegar to the mole for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse the apple cider vinegar with clean water and let it dry.
  • Repeat these steps 4 times daily, for a week.
  • The scabs will fall off and leave the mole-free skin. [10] X Research Source

Cover with gauze and leave for about 3 hours for the skin to fully absorb the gel. Change the gauze pad with a new one every 3 hours.

    • Repeat this once daily for several weeks. Theoretically, the mole should disappear after a few weeks.
  • Advice

    • If there is hair growing out of the mole, you can use small scissors to carefully trim the hair down to the surface of the skin. Or you can see a dermatologist for permanent hair removal.
    • If you don’t want to get rid of the mole completely for reasons of risk and cost, you can use cosmetics to cover the mole. There are many cosmetic products specifically designed and marketed for covering moles and similar skin imperfections.
