Maybe you just graduated and are looking for your first job, or your current job just isn’t right for you. Either way, you’re in need of a job quickly. The job search process can be frustrating, so it’s important to stay focused and organized. The possibility of success will be greater if you know how to actively look for opportunities, adjust your resume to suit the job requirements and know how to impress in the application process.
Steps
Apply for a job
- Don’t apply for jobs for which you are completely unqualified. For example, if you don’t speak Spanish, don’t apply for jobs that say “Spanish knowledge required.”
- Dress professionally.
- Maintain eye contact and speak confidently.
- Arrive on time.
- You can also send a thank you note after applying. You can say “I am writing to make sure you receive my application. I am happy to provide additional documents to prove my qualifications if you consider it necessary.”
Personal Profile Adjustment
- For example, a job might require “excellent communication skills”. List detailed examples that demonstrate your communication skills in the past.
- You don’t have to revise your entire resume every time you apply. However, you need to make sure to highlight your most important skill for the job.
- Describe your most important skills in a few sentences.
- Avoid referring to vague skills such as “doing the right thing”. Use specific terms like “negotiation,” “decision making,” and “time management.” [8] X Research Sources
- For example, the job description might require someone who knows how to work in a team. You could write about a time when, as an intern, you were in charge of organizing a project where many other interns were involved.
- Try to keep the cover letter length to one page.
- For example, you should focus on building an impressive LinkedIn account. Your title should be short, for example “Research Analyst”.
- Take advantage of the space provided to list your experiences and abilities.
- Don’t forget to edit your account.
- The account should include contact information and a link to your resume.
Looking for job opportunities
- You can also use online job search engines to expand your search. Enter keywords and geolocation into popular sites like Indeed, Jobs.com, TheLadders, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn. [13] X Research Source
- For example, if you wanted to find a medical equipment salesperson in Hanoi, your keywords would be “business”, “medical” with the geographical location “Hanoi”. You can also use keywords in English so as not to miss job opportunities at foreign companies based in Vietnam.
- If you live in the United States, Craigslist is also a pretty good online job search site. This page is especially useful when you need immediate employment.
- LinkedIn: You can use this site to build a professional online profile. Here, you can post your bio, helping potential employers learn more about you. You can also post your current resume for others to follow.
- Twitter: More and more people are using this tool to find jobs. You can follow companies that interest you to see job postings. Alternatively, you can use trending hashtags like #jobs and #jobhunt to search for jobs on Twitter (most likely only for overseas jobs).
- Like other search engines, the state job bank allows you to search by keyword and city.
- Lecturer or professor who used to teach at school
- Former employer
- People at the company you want to work for
- Anyone you know has a career similar to the one you want
- You could say, “I’m looking for a new job in the publishing industry. If there’s a job opening in that field, would you let me know?”
- Check your city or university’s online page for more information on upcoming job fairs.
- At job fairs, you can collect brochures and other information from companies that are hiring. In addition, you can also talk directly with the recruiter.
- View online posts about job opportunities
- Get in touch with your network
- Edit resume and cover letter
- Apply for a certain number of jobs each week
Advice
- Apply for multiple jobs at once.
- Keep your resume up to date.
- Look out for new opportunities in your area.
- Be ready to receive positive feedback.
