Although the elastic corners of the bed sheet can help secure the sheet on the mattress, they make it difficult to fold the sheet. If you’ve ever gotten bored and rolled up your bed sheets and stuffed them in the closet, don’t think you’re the only one! Luckily, with a little practice, you have a bed sheet that folds up perfectly and neatly stacks on the shelf without having to curl up!

Hold the corners of the bed sheet lengthwise, the reverse side on the outside. Place your hands inside two adjacent corners of the bed sheet and hold it up so that the short ends of the sheet hang down and the long sides are stretched across. The right side of the sheet you are holding is facing you, and the left side is facing out. [1] X Research Source

If you look at the seams of the bed sheet, you will see that one side has a straight line with no seams, and the other side has a visible seam. The side with visible seams is the reverse side of the sheet, ie the side facing the mattress. This is the side that you will be facing out.

Fold your right hand corner over the left corner. Join the two corners together in front of you, making sure to align the seams with each other. Then you will flip the right side of the right corner outward so that it covers the left corner. [2] X Research Source

  • To make it easier, you can think of this move as folding one sock over the other.
  • By this time, the elastic parts of both sides will fit neatly together.
  • If you are left-handed, fold your left corner over the right corner.

Join the lower front corner to the top 2 corners. The left hand holds the two folded corners, the right hand reaches down to grab the corner closest to you. Fold the bottom corner to the top 2 corners that you just folded together and arrange all 3 corners to coincide. [3] X Trusted Source Consumer Reports Go to Source

  • If you fold each bottom corner in turn, you will have neater folds.
  • If you want, you can fold the bottom 2 corners together, then concatenate both corners and combine with the first 2 corners.

Fold the last corner up and smooth the fabric edges of the sheet. At this point, you will have 1 corner hanging down and the other 3 corners are in your left hand. Line up the last corner with the others and smooth out the drooping edges. [4] X Research Sources

  • An easy way to smooth a sheet is to put your hand in the crease at the bottom end of the sheet and gently shake it until the edges align.

Place the sheet on the table so that the folded corners are facing up. Once you’ve lined all four corners together, you’ll need to spread the sheet on a hard surface, such as a table top. The four folded corners will be placed face up at one corner, but it’s okay if the sheet looks a bit flimsy right now. Just try not to let the folded corners pop out when you lay the sheet down on the table. [5] X Research Sources

  • If the corners come apart, you may have to shake the sheet off and start over.

Fold the two sides inward so that the sheet forms a rectangle. Line up the sheet so that the seams of the corners form a new angle. Next, fold both sides on either side of the corner inwards to form squared edges. [6] X Research Sources

  • When folded, you will see an L-shaped fold running along the 2 edges of the sheet, the elastic part on the inner edge of the fold.

Use your hand to smooth the surface of the fabric. The hard surface that you use to fold the bed sheet will allow you to fold the sharp edges. Once you’ve folded the sheet’s elastic edges inward and formed a rectangle, run your hands across the fabric, including new folds, to smooth out bulges and wrinkles.

  • If folding on a mattress or carpeted floor, you may not be able to fold sharp edges like folding on a hard surface.

Fold the sheet in 3 lengthwise. Fold the top 1/3 down so that the corners are tucked inside. Use both hands to smooth the surface of the fabric, then fold the end 1/3 up so that the sheet becomes a long and narrow rectangle.

  • All folds, corners and elastics must be concealed inside the sheet.

Finish by folding the sheet in 3 horizontally. When the sheet has been folded into a neat rectangle, all you have to do is fold the sheet into a square. Fold one edge about 1/3 of the way to the center of the rectangle, then fold the other side up to complete the square folded sheet!

    • If it’s a large sheet, you may have to fold the long rectangle in 4 instead of 3. Fold in 4 by doubling and then doubling again.
