Shoe creaking will make you and those around you feel uncomfortable. A creaking noise is sometimes caused by a manufacturer’s fault, the shoe’s wear over time, or the moisture inside the shoe. There are many ways to repair shoes at home, but if the problem is related to the inside of the shoe, you will need the assistance of a shoe repairman.

Find the location of the creaking sound. Put your shoes back and forth then swing your feet from front to back and then left to right. Once you’ve found the movement that’s causing the creaking, you should look for the part that flexes with the movement of your foot.

  • If possible, have a friend press your ear to the floor and listen attentively while you walk.
Sprinkle powder on shoes. Once you know which part is causing the creaking, sprinkle baby powder, cornstarch, or baking powder over that part. The powder will absorb moisture causing noise and reduce the noise caused by the friction of two parts in the shoe. Here are some common problem areas and how to fix them:

  • If the creaking sound is coming from the inside of the shoe, pull up the insole and sprinkle the powder along the hem of the shoe. [1] X Research Source If your insoles cannot be removed, apply powder to the edge of the sole.
  • Sprinkle powder on the tongue underneath the laces if the tongue makes a creaking sound.
  • If the sole of the shoe is squeaking, it may be due to the air cushion. Apply powder to the sole of the shoe where the hem or vent hole is located. [2] X Research Source

Wipe shoes with WD40 product or silicone spray. These two products are more effective than leather conditioners but need to be applied carefully to avoid damaging the shoes. Spray either lubricant on a cotton towel or cotton ball. Then wipe around the outside edge of the shoe, along the creaking area, or the entire outside of the shoe. [3] X Research Sources

  • Do not use oil-based products on suede shoes as the rough surface of the leather can be damaged.
Apply a leather conditioner to your shoes. If you wear leather shoes, you will apply a leather conditioner to the shoes and then polish them with a dry towel. [4] X Research Source You should remember to buy suede care products for suede materials instead of choosing the regular product.

You should carefully review the shoe return policy before performing these methods. If you’re going to have a new shoe repaired, know that the creaking noise could be due to a manufacturer’s fault and you can either exchange for a different shoe or request a refund. If you fix it yourself using glue or other hard adhesive material, you will not receive the warranty policy.

Use saddle soap (leather cleaning product). The use of saddle soap is a controversial issue among owners of genuine leather shoes. Some say the product dries out the skin while others say it doesn’t cause damage. If you don’t mind the risk, apply some saddle soap on the problem area and polish it with a dry towel. This is especially effective when dealing with squeaky shoe tongues. [5] X Research Sources

  • Do not use saddle soap on suede material.

Apply glue to the heel of the shoe that is wobbly. This should only be done when the above “simple fixes” do not work because excess glue can easily damage the shoe or leave a stain on the shoe. If the heel is wobbly, simply apply some super glue or rubber cement to secure it, press the heel for a few seconds until the heel is firmly attached. [6] X Research Source

  • This will not work for shoes with urethane waterproofing material.
  • You should bring expensive high heels to a shoe repair shop to avoid the risk of damage.

Glue silicone (silicone caulk) to the open sole. Purchase a tube of silicone sealant with a squeeze tip or a special silicone product for shoe repair. Place the tip of the glue tube into the gap between the shoe and the sole and slowly squeeze the glue in until the gap is filled. Secure the shoes and soles with elastic bands, heavy objects, or hardware clamps and let them dry overnight.

Take your shoes to a shoe repair shop. Take your shoes to a cobbler or shoe repair shop and ask for advice or have someone help you fix your shoes. Half of the shoes make a creaking noise because of a loose inner shoe frame or another problem that needs to be fixed by a skilled craftsman. [7] X Research Sources

Dry wet shoes

Check for the cause of the creaking sound in wet shoes. A lot of shoes only creak when wet. Sometimes this is just the sound made by rubber soles on linpeum, hardwood or other slippery floor materials. Some shoe soles bulge or develop structural problems when wet that cause the shoe to creak, and this problem can be remedied by other methods in this article. Whichever method you choose, the shoe drying methods in this section will guide you through how to quickly and effectively dry your shoes without damaging them.
Take out the shoe insole. If the shoe has a removable insole, you should take it out and dry it separately to make it dry faster.
Stuff the newspaper in the shoe. Stuff the dry paper and stuff it into the shoe. Try to insert the first piece of paper into the toe of the shoe for maximum absorption.

Use a cedar shoe tree if possible. A “shoe core” is a two-part object that is used to be inserted into a shoe instead of newspaper in order to retain its shape while drying the shoe. Cedar soles are especially effective because the wood will draw moisture out of the shoe. [8] X Research Sources

Leave the shoe on its side at room temperature. You can either lay the shoe on its side or rest it against a wall with the sole facing out while it dries. Dry the shoes in a warm place but not near a heat source. [9] X Research Source
  • Advice

    • If your new shoes squeak, you should take them to a store for a free exchange or repair.

    Warning

    • Drying wet shoes with a high heat source can cause the shoes to deform or damage.
