Buy a new zipper head if the old slider is broken. If the slider is damaged and cannot work properly, you need to buy a new one to replace it. [1] X Research Source Alternative zipper sliders are available at craft or apparel supply stores.

  • The replacement zipper head needs to be the same size and style as the old slider. Better yet, bring your old slider for comparison.
  • You can also purchase a zipper repair kit (which includes virtually everything you need to change the zipper and add a stopper) at most craft or apparel stores. If not, you will need to purchase each replacement part separately including the top or bottom zipper and stopper.

Use pliers to remove some of the chain teeth at the end of the chain. To reattach the puller, you’ll need to remove some of the chain teeth to reveal the fabric on either end of the zipper. Use pliers to pull the chain teeth out of the zipper. Continue to remove the chain teeth until 5 – 7.5 cm of fabric is exposed. [2] X Research Source

  • Remove the chain teeth just enough to reattach the zipper head. If the zipper head is large, the required fabric clearance will be 7.5 cm. For small cross section zippers, you may only need to remove from 2.5 – 5 cm.
  • Check the condition of the zipper before removing the chain teeth. If the zipper is open, you need to remove the chain tooth located at the end of the zipper. If the zipper is closed, remove the top chain teeth.
  • Check to make sure that the exposed fabric on both sides is the same. If you remove the uneven chain teeth, it will be difficult to reattach the tractor head.

Attach the top of the zipper to the fabric. Attachment direction will be different depending on the condition of the zipper when unzipped. [3] X Research Sources

  • If the zipper is open, attach the zipper to the bottom fabric so that the slider runs up when pulled.
  • If the zipper is closed, you need to attach the zipper to the upper fabric so that the slider runs down when pulling.

Tuck the two locking teeth into the puller. To get the top of the zipper that is resting on the fabric slide into the locking teeth, you need to tuck both sides of the fabric over the top of the zipper and give it a good tug. This tension will move the tow head towards the chain teeth of the tow line. [4] X Research Sources

  • Continue inserting until you hear a “click” sound. This sound indicates that the zipper tip has slipped back into the chain teeth.

Check the zipper after attaching the slider. Try pulling the zipper up and down a few times to see if it goes smoothly. Once the puller is on the chain teeth, you will be able to move the slider up and down with ease. If the slider is bent or jammed, you may need to remove it and reattach it. [5] X Research Sources

  • Keep the slider from falling out of the locking teeth before you secure the two ends of the zipper with the top or bottom stop.

Depending on the condition of the zipper, you will use the top or bottom stopper. After removing some of the chain teeth from the buckle, you need to attach the top stop or the bottom stop to prevent the zipper end from sliding off the rails. Top stoppers are small pieces of metal attached to one side of the lock tooth. The bottom stop is square pins connecting the two sides of the locking teeth to prevent the slider from slipping out, and at the same time cover the gap between the two sides of the zipper. [6] X Research Source

  • The top stop is designed for the top end of the zipper, acts as a stopper to prevent the slider from slipping out, and does not interfere with the opening and closing of the zipper.
  • The lower stopper is used to attach to the lower end of the zipper, in addition to connecting the two locking teeth, the lower stopper also prevents the slider from falling out, and also covers the space where you have removed the chain teeth.

Press the upper stopper to the locking tooth with pliers. If you want to prevent the slider from slipping off the top end of the zipper, you need to add a stopper by attaching it just above the first locking tooth. First, open the zipper slightly. Then, attach the upper stopper to the appropriate position and press the accessory into place with pliers. [7] X Research Sources

  • Check that the top stopper is firmly pressed into place and does not move as you pull.
  • Attach top stoppers to both sides of the zipper so that the tip won’t slide out of the lock teeth anymore.

Snap the prongs of the lower stop into place. If you want to add a bottom stop to cover the bottom gap of the zipper, push the prongs of the stopper into the fabric on both sides of the zipper. Insert the prong of the square pin just below the last chain tooth of the zipper (zip must be closed). Once the square pin is on the fabric, you can use pliers to break the prongs inward. [8] X Research Sources

  • You need to press so that the lower bar is fixed and the prongs are not bent. It’s important that the prongs are straight so they don’t get stuck anywhere or scratch your skin.
