The best photo editing app on mobile is Google’s Snapseed (available on Android and iPhone), but you probably don’t want to download a new app. In this case, you can use the default photo app on Android, called Google Photos. For iPhone and iPad, you can use the Photos app for basic photo editing. For computers, you can easily edit photos with photo editing software like GIMP, unless you have a paid subscription or purchased Adobe Photoshop. GIMP and Photoshop software are functionally the same; Although this article introduces the free GIMP software, you can still perform the same steps using Photoshop.

Edit JPG images to your liking. Since each app typically has different settings and operations, your best solution is to tap the selections in the app and explore the menus. While most of the basic editing tools are free, features with a padlock or dollar icon require you to pay to unlock them.

  • Cropping is an effective way to bring out subjects in an image by cutting out part of the background. The crop tool usually has an icon of two right angles forming a square. To crop the image, you will select the crop tool and drag the corner of the image inward so that the subject of the image is in the center of the lighter part. All that remains is to touch the change confirmation icon.
    • When using Snapseed, you’ll find this option and many other editing features under the Tops tab.
  • Some applications allow you to adjust the saturation, or color intensity in the image. Increasing the saturation of an image can bring out the colors and make the photo eye-catching. However, high saturation can make photos look harsh and almost cartoonish. You can adjust the saturation to highlight certain areas of the image by using the slider to increase or decrease the saturation.
  • In photography, exposure refers to the amount of light on the image. If the photo is too dark, you need to increase the exposure. If you want the photo to be darker, lower the exposure. You can drag the slider to increase or decrease the exposure.

Try using filters (instead of adjusting everything manually). Most photo editing applications provide many filters to help users perform editing operations. Look for a tag or icon below or above the image preview to see elements that can be adjusted with the app you’re using. Most photo editing apps display the filter as a preview thumbnail at the bottom of the screen. You will touch the thumbnail to preview the effect on the photo. Find a slider or icon with a slider that you can use to adjust the strength of the filter.

  • In Snapseed, this selection shows up in the Looks tab.

This is an article on how to edit JPG images with mobile applications and computer software.
