Prepare a glass. So you’ve decided to do it. How do you start wiretapping? The method is to place an ordinary glass against the wall. This works because you create an “acoustic coupler” between the wall and the glass, allowing the sound waves to travel from side to side. [1] X Research Source A soda or beer will work best. Some people also eavesdrop with Dixie paper cups, but glass seems to conduct sound better than others.

  • Experiment with different types and shapes of glasses to see which works best.
  • If you have an iPhone, you can download the Amplitude Pro app and hold the glass of your iPhone against the wall. This app lets you hear distant sounds much more clearly, but it also records and saves amplified noise. [2] X Research Source

Follow the clearest listening areas. Some places on the wall will transmit sound more clearly than others due to structural reasons or the distance from the sound source. Feel free to experiment to check the sound quality until you find the best spot. Sometimes this will be difficult if the sound is coming from the ceiling. If you are too far away from the sound on the wall, you won’t hear everything clearly.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/f/f0/Hear-Through-Walls-Step-3-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Hear-Through-Walls- Step-3-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/f0/Hear-Through-Walls-Step-3-Version-2.jpg/ v4-728px-Hear-Through-Walls-Step-3-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Put the mouth of the glass against the wall. Remember that for this to work, you must pair the wall and the glass. Do this by placing the glass on a flat surface, the rim facing down, against the wall. Now the sound waves will travel from the wall into the glass and make it easier for you to hear.

  • Once the glass is in place, place your ear on the bottom of the glass. Keep moving the glass on the wall if you can’t hear it clearly.

Drill a small hole. Another way to hear through walls is to use a hole and plastic film, a method recently discovered by scientists in Japan and South Korea. First, you drill a very small hole through the wall. An electric drill with a small, long screwdriver is best suited for this. [3] X Research Sources

  • Don’t expect to hear too much through a single hole. In fact, a simple hole in the wall seriously interferes with sound transmission.
  • Try to pick a time when your neighbor is out to drill through the wall. Otherwise, they may also notice sounds or debris from drilling.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/6/6f/Hear-Through-Walls-Step-5-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Hear-Through-Walls- Step-5-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/6/6f/Hear-Through-Walls-Step-5-Version-2.jpg/ v4-728px-Hear-Through-Walls-Step-5-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Cover the hole with a thin film. This is what you should do for the method to really work. Studies show that when you cover the hole with a thin film on one side, sound transmission becomes virtually wall-free, because the membrane helps equalize the pressure on both sides of the hole and funnel sound through.

  • Try using a common household item, namely food wrap. In fact, the scientists who did the original study used food wrap. [4] X Research Sources

Listen. When you put the hole and the plastic film in place, listen! If done properly, you should be able to hear what is happening in the opposite room quite clearly.

  • For even better results, try this method in combination with the first one. Place a glass on top of the hole and plastic film.
  • Note that drilling a hole in the wall has very obvious disadvantages, especially in regards to secrecy. Your neighbors can hear the drill; they can see the hole; or may notice drilling debris on the floor and start to get suspicious. Do it carefully!

Using a wiretap

Collect materials. We are now using more sophisticated listening devices. You can make your own stethoscope or buy a new one. Available models will save you time but can cost several million. However, unlike an off-the-shelf model, making your own stethoscope will cost around 600k or less, provided you already have a pretty decent MP3 player.

  • Usually you can buy a stethoscope at a drugstore for about 200 thousand. The quality of the stethoscope usually can’t make much of a difference. [5] X Research Sources
  • You will also need a microphone. Stereoscopic multimedia microphones are preferred, as they are cheap (about 300 thousand) but have quite good sound parameters. As a result, you should be able to use them to listen to sound quite easily and with reasonable quality. [6] X Research Source
  • Finally, you’ll need an MP3 player to record audio as well as a 3.5mm stereo (micro)converter Y-cable. Cable will be pretty cheap, around 70 or 100 thousand. The MP3 player will be the most expensive item if you don’t own one. Keep in mind that it has to be able to record audio, which means you’ll need a newer version (many older machines don’t record but just play music). [7] X Research Sources

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/c/c2/Hear-Through-Walls-Step-8-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Hear-Through-Walls- Step-8-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/c/c2/Hear-Through-Walls-Step-8-Version-2.jpg/ v4-728px-Hear-Through-Walls-Step-8-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Disassemble the microphone. You’ll need to cut the microphone in half to get the wiring, remove the top or top, and separate the microphone. You will then insert the disassembled microphone into the earpiece of the stethoscope. [8] X Research Sources

  • A good tool to do this is the X-Acto knife. It will neatly trim the outside of the microphone and allow you to get to the internals. You should leave 2 microphone tubes and a 3.5 mm connector (cable).

Disassemble and reinstall the headset. Remove the headset from the stethoscope. This is pretty easy and they will pop right out. Don’t leave them out, though, as you’ll need to attach them to the microphone.

  • Next, gently drill shallow holes into each plastic earpiece equal in diameter to the microphone’s housing. The dimensions of these holes need to be precise, as the microphone must fit inside them. An electric drill or electric grinder can give you the precision you want. [9] X Research Source
  • Glue the microphone inside the headset. Dab some glue around the edges of the microphone housing and then insert them into the holes you just drilled in the earpiece of the stethoscope. Put the headset back on the stethoscope and wait for the glue to dry.

Hook the receiver to the MP3 player. Finally, attach the stethoscope and microphone to the MP3 player. Use the Y-cable to connect the microphone to the MP3 player. The sound you capture through the wall will now be collected and amplified by the microphone, transmitted to the MP3 player and recorded or saved. [10] X Research Source

  • Plug the single audio connector into the MP3 player. Your spy stethoscope should be ready to go now.

Start listening. Practice with your stethoscope first. As with a regular glass, you’ll need to experiment a bit to find the ideal spot on the wall or to get a recording. However, unless the walls are double glazed or have thick insulation, you should be able to hear what is being said on the opposite side.

Ask yourself, do you really want or need to eavesdrop? By listening through a wall, you are about to spy on another person and invade private conversations. This poses huge legal and ethical problems. Before taking action, seriously ask yourself if you want to do it. Is it worth your risk?

  • What matters is the situation. In England, for example, a man rescued his elderly neighbor from a robbery by listening through a wall with a glass. [11] X Research Source In his situation, wiretapping certainly makes sense.
  • However, things are rarely so clear-cut. You probably shouldn’t do it if there’s any doubt about the situation. If you decide to do it, make sure you know the possible consequences of your actions.

Awareness of wiretapping laws. Eavesdropping means to overhear, record, magnify, or broadcast any part of a private conversation without the consent of at least one person involved. Be aware that countries have laws against wiretapping. By eavesdropping, you may also be breaking the law; you may even be breaking the law by owning a wiretapping device. [12] X Trusted Source Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Go to source

  • Your country may have laws that require “one party consent” or “two parties consent”. One-party consent means it’s illegal to eavesdrop unless you have the consent of at least one of the people involved in a private conversation. With mutual consent, you must obtain permission from both parties to eavesdrop, record, or amplify their communications. [13] X Research Source
  • Take the state of Michigan as an example. Michigan has a two-way consent law – you must have permission from all parties to be able to “eavesdrop on, record, amplify, or broadcast any part of a private conversation.” This applies even in your own home. Eavesdropping in one’s own home is also a felony. [14] X Research Source

    Consider all negative consequences. What if you eavesdrop and someone finds out? What could happen to you? This is a good question and you should consider all possible outcomes, in which case serious.

    • In Michigan, the penalties for illegal wiretapping are up to 2 years in prison, a $2,000 fine, or both. [15] X Research Source In California, wiretapping is a misdemeanor or felony. As a misdemeanor, you face up to 364 days in prison and a $2,500 fine; if it’s a felony, you could face up to 3 years in prison and a $2,500 fine. [16] X Research Source
    • Of course, a criminal penalty isn’t the only bad outcome. You also face a civil lawsuit for violating someone’s privacy, which can be costly and cost tens of millions of dong. Even if you escape the legal consequences, the person is probably very angry about what you did.
  • Things you need
