Dark hair is often difficult to dye for many reasons. Sometimes the dye doesn’t change color at all, sometimes it turns brass or orange. The bleaching step will help you achieve the best results, but not everyone wants to take the extra effort and risk accepting damaged hair. Fortunately, you can successfully dye your hair without bleaching it with the right products. Remember that you can only lighten your hair color up to a point.

Understand that you cannot lighten your hair color without bleaching it. If you have dark hair, you can dye it a different shade of the same intensity, such as dark brown or dark red. You can’t turn dark brown hair into blonde without using some kind of bleach, such as a bleach kit or peroxide. [1] X Research Source

  • You can use a product that contains bleach or peroxide, but be aware that it can only lighten your hair color to a certain extent.

Forget about pastel colors if you don’t want to bleach your hair, as this is not possible. Even blonde hair needs bleaching and toner to balance hair color. [2] X Research Source

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/6/6b/Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-3.jpg/v4-728px-Dye-Dark-Hair- Without-Bleach-Step-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/6/6b/Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-3.jpg/ v4-728px-Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Remember that hair dye has transparency. Some of the natural hair color will still shine out. For example, if you were going to dye your blond hair blue, the result you would get might be green. Because your hair is dark, any dye color will be darker than the color printed on the box when dyeing. If you have dark brown hair and want to dye it red, your hair will end up being dark red.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/d/da/Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-4.jpg/v4-728px-Dye-Dark-Hair- Without-Bleach-Step-4.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/da/Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-4.jpg/ v4-728px-Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-4.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Note that some hair types and textures are more susceptible to dyeing than others. There are different types of hair with different thicknesses and porosity. All of the above factors affect the receptivity of hair color. For example, Asian hair is often difficult to dye because the cuticle is too strong. African hair is also difficult to dye because it is quite weak and easily damaged. [3] X Research Sources

  • Even if you have the exact same hair color as a friend’s, there’s no guarantee that the dye she uses will have the same effect on yours.

Choose a permanent (permanent) or semi-permanent dye instead of a semi-permanent. Semi-permanent dye contains a small amount of peroxide, so it can lighten hair color to a certain extent. This is a good option if you want to dye your hair a little lighter. Permanent dyes are much stronger and can lighten hair color up to 4 levels; Unfortunately, this type also causes more damage. [4] X Research Sources

  • Semi-temporary dyes will not take away hair color, but only add color.

Try using a light-colored concentrated dye, but understand that the effect won’t be as noticeable. Light colors sometimes won’t show on dark hair. Lighter colors such as blue or purple may tint but will be very dark. You can see these colors in sunlight, but not in other lights. [5] X Research Sources

  • Look for “temporary” hair dyes like: Directions, Manic Panic, and Special Effects. [6] X Research Source

Use specialized products for best results, but be aware that you won’t have many options. There are hair dyes specifically for chestnut brown hair, such as Splat. These products are still quite new and are limited to only a few colors like purple, red and blue. [7] X Research Sources . When buying hair dye, look for the product label that says: For dark hair.

  • You can also try a hair color that adds color, such as Splat or Manic Panic. [8] X Source of Research These are concentrated dyes and may work better on dark hair than other hair dyes.

Choose cool or ash tones. Dark colored hair often turns brassy when dyed light. Warm-toned hair dyes will make your hair even warmer, and in some cases even orange. Cool tones or ash tones will help reduce red tones and create more accurate colors. [9] X Research Source

Have a toning shampoo ready to prevent your hair from turning brassy. This step is not required but is a good idea. As mentioned above, dark hair often turns brass or orange after being lightened. You can de-tone brass or orange with purple or blue shampoo. [10] X Research Source

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/e/ed/Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-10.jpg/v4-728px-Dye-Dark-Hair- Without-Bleach-Step-10.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/ed/Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-10.jpg/ v4-728px-Dye-Dark-Hair-Without-Bleach-Step-10.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Choose a dye color, preferably one with a cool undertone. Permanent dyes will have better results than semi-temporary ones because they contain ingredients that lighten the hair color. Semi-permanent dyes will open the hair cuticle and allow more color in, but won’t lighten the hair color. Cold tones are also recommended, as it helps reduce the risk of hair turning brassy.

  • If you have dark hair and want to dye it brown, you should choose a light or medium blonde .

Protect skin, clothing and work surfaces. Cover the table top with either newspaper or nylon. Wrap an old towel or a haircut over your shoulders. Apply Vaseline cream to the skin along the hairline, back of the neck and ears. Finally, wear nylon gloves.

  • You can also wear an old t-shirt in place of a towel or a barber’s cape.
  • You probably don’t need to buy nylon gloves. Many hair dye sets already have gloves available.

Prepare the hair dye according to the instructions. Usually, you just need to pour the dye into a dye bottle that already contains the foundation and shake well. Some hair dye sets have additional hair products that you need to pour into the dye bottle, such as hair shine oil.

  • You can also use a dye brush to mix the dye in a non-metallic bowl.

Apply dye to your hair. Start by spreading the dye onto the roots, using your fingers or a hairbrush to spread the dye down. Get more dye if needed. [12] X Research Source

  • You can also use the tip of the dye bottle to apply the dye directly to your hair.
  • If you mix dye in a bowl, you can use a comb to spread the dye.

Dye the rest of your hair in layers. Remove the top bun and let down another layer of hair. Tie up the rest of your hair and apply more dye to the newly dropped hair. Continue in this way until all the hair on the top of the head is treated.

  • Remember to dye both sideburns and temples.
  • You should dye the hair on the top of the head last, because this is the part of the hair that can be processed the fastest. [13] X Research Source
  • If you have thick hair, you may need to divide your hair into sections and apply the dye layer by layer to ensure that the entire hair is fully absorbed.

Wrap your hair in a bun and wait for the dye to color. The waiting time for the dye to color depends on the type of dye. Most hair dye brands require a 25-minute wait, but some require a longer wait. Be sure to read the product label.

  • Cover your hair with cling film, a plastic bag, or a shower cap. This step helps keep the heat inside so the dye is more effective. [14] X Research Source

Rinse off the dye with cool water and use conditioner. When the time is up for the dye to color, use cool water to rinse your hair. Continue flushing until the water is clear. Apply conditioner for dyed hair, wait 2-3 minutes and then rinse with cool water to close the hair cuticle. Do not use shampoo.

  • Advice

    • Consider adding a cpor corrector for red, orange, or blonde hair to the dye. This product will help decolorize brass due to the lightening process. [15] X Research Source
    • You can also try a highlighter set for dark hair. Mix with 30 vpume dye auxiliaries. [16] X Research Source
    • Keep hair healthy before and after dyeing with an intensive hair conditioner and hair mask. [17] X Research Source
    • Lighten hair color slowly to avoid hair damage. It’s best to dye your hair slowly, a little lighter each time rather than dyeing it all at once. [18] X Research Sources
    • Use shampoos and conditioners made specifically for colored hair to preserve color, maintain shine, and help keep hair healthy. [19] X Research Source
    • If you can’t find shampoos and conditioners that are safe for colored hair, you can use products that do not contain sulfates.
