Tequila is alcohol distilled from the green agave plant, and is a specialty of Mexico. [1] X Research Source Tequila comes in three basic varieties (along with a few that fall into two basic categories): Blanco , which means “white” and unbrewed; reposado , which means “distilled” and is aged for 2 to 12 months in oak barrels; and añejo , which means “classic” and aged for 1 to 3 years in small oak barrels. While tequila was once considered a party drink, there are ways to enjoy it without making you feel like you just played piñata the next morning. Here are a few suggestions.

Choose tequila made from 100% agave. Not all tequila are created equal. If you want to enjoy tequila and enjoy it like a Mexican, you should choose 100% real tequila.

  • Many tequilas are in the “mixto” category, which means they’re made with at least 51% agave and added sugar. You should avoid these types. They don’t taste like tequila.
  • Most bartenders and tequila experts recommend choosing household-produced tequila over large corporations. [2] X Research Source (We’re looking at you, Cuervo.) If you can find a home-made tequila this is 100% agave and will taste better.
Choose the Añejo tequila. Tequila añejo is aged for at least a year, so they taste better than tequila that hasn’t aged long or that has a lot of tequila flavor but lacks the signature rich flavor. These añejos are often compared to aged cognacs.

  • Añejos are usually more expensive than reposado or blanco , but not too expensive. You can find premium añejo under 1 million VND.
  • Drink añejos at room temperature. [3] X Source of Research Adding ice dilutes the flavor and can mask many of the tequila’s various ingredients.
  • If you really want to enjoy tequila, you should use a tequila cup to enjoy añejo. Also many people use a narrow-mouthed cup to drink tequila.

Enjoy the tequila with some sangrita. “Sangrita” means “a little blood” in Spanish, due to the color of the liquid. Sangrita is a non-alcoholic drink. Combine sangrita with tequila in a small wine glass and drink tequila and sangrita respectively. To make sangrita, you need to mix the following ingredients together and chill:

  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 cup tomato juice (not V-8)
  • 30 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon pomegranate syrup
  • 12 drops chili sauce, such as Chpula

Observe drinking etiquette. (Optional.) If you want to enjoy tequila the right way, here are a few tips from the experts who enjoy classic tequila.

  • Pour 30 ml of tequila into a tequila cup or narrow-mouthed cup. Hold the base of the cup (not the stem), raise the cup to eye level and observe the color of the tequila.
  • Rotate the tequila cup. Notice how the tequila clings to the sides of the cup, look for the “string of pearls” effect. [4] X Research Sources
  • Take a small sip, hold the tequila in your mouth for about 10 seconds, letting the alcohol come into contact with each part of your tongue.
  • Swallow and repeat the process! Do you find it attractive?

Choose tequila blanco , oro , or reposado . Oro , meaning “gold,” tastes similar to blanco and costs about the same. You should choose tequila made from 100% agave. Mixto is usually cheaper but will give you a headache the next morning.
Drink quickly and do not chill. You don’t have to add salt and lemon if you don’t want to. (Most Mexicans don’t drink tequila this way.) [5] X Research Source ) Pour room temperature tequila into a small, shallow cup, and drink quickly.

Serve with salt and lemon. The method of using salt and lemon to drink tequila has been around for a long time, although this is not the common way of drinking tequila among Mexicans. One report states that the oldest salt-and-lime technique dates back to 1924, in the following sequence: First lemon, then tequila, then salt. [5] X Source of Research Either way, it’s still a popular way to drink tequila, although connoisseurs don’t like it. Here’s how:

  • Lick the skin between your thumb and index finger. Sprinkle a little salt on the skin in contact with the saliva.
  • Take a cup of tequila and a slice of lemon, lick the salt in your hand and drink the tequila. Try to finish your sip because you are drinking.
  • Suck on a lemon wedge after drinking tequila to lessen the taste of the alcohol. The acidity in lemons is not so obvious after drinking alcohol.

Enjoy tequila in a classic margarita. Margarita can be chilled or classic. If you want a taste of tequila, you should choose the classic margarita, because chilled margaritas have added sugar and water. To make a delicious margarita, follow this recipe:

  • Place the following ingredients in a mixing bowl and fill the pitcher half full with ice:
    • 60 ml tequila blanco , oro , or reposado
    • 15 ml orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Triple-Sec
    • 30 ml fresh lemon juice
    • 15 ml agave nectar sweetener
  • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds and pour salt into cocktail glass around the rim.
Enjoy tequila in “tequini” or tequila martini. Tequini contains the sophistication and class of a martini and brings a little joy into the drink. However, you should be careful because this type is very intoxicating! Swap the tequini for sweet tequini with reposado tequila and sweet vermouth.

  • Place the following ingredients in a mixing bowl and add ice:
    • 75 ml tequila blanco
    • 15ml pure vermouth
    • A little bitter Angostura
  • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds and pour into martini cup.
  • Garnish with piu, lime wedges, or jalapeno pepper.
Enjoy tequila in tequila sunrise. Named for the drink’s red and orange layers, this recipe shows that tequila and orange are the perfect combination.

  • Put ice in a jar and add:
    • 60 ml tequila blanco , oro , or reposado
    • The orange juice is just enough to fill the cup.
  • Stir the ingredients together and add two drops of pomegranate syrup to the drink by tilting the cup slightly and quickly pouring the syrup into the sides. Pomegranate syrup flows to the bottom of the cup and slowly rises to the top.
  • Garnish with stirring spoon, straw and cherries with orange slices.

Try another variety of Bloddy Mary, called vampira. The drink is sometimes called “Bloody Maria.” Vampira cocktail is a Mexican drink based on the classic bloody Mary recipe. This dish is light and rich, yet maintains its essence without altering the core elements of the original drink.

    • Place ice in a 300 ml beaker. Add the following ingredients to the cup:
      • a little salt
      • 45 ml tequila blanco
      • 1 teaspoon Mexican chili sauce, eg Chpula
      • 30 ml Clamato
      • 30 ml fresh lemon juice
    • Add Mexican Squirt or grapefruit soda, and garnish with lemon wedges.
  • Warning

    • Always drink responsibly. Do not drive while drinking and vice versa.
