Tequila is alcohol distilled from the green agave plant, and is a specialty of Mexico. [1] X Research Source Tequila comes in three basic varieties (along with a few that fall into two basic categories): Blanco , which means “white” and unbrewed; reposado , which means “distilled” and is aged for 2 to 12 months in oak barrels; and añejo , which means “classic” and aged for 1 to 3 years in small oak barrels. While tequila was once considered a party drink, there are ways to enjoy it without making you feel like you just played piñata the next morning. Here are a few suggestions.
Steps
Drink each sip, slowly enjoy
- Many tequilas are in the “mixto” category, which means they’re made with at least 51% agave and added sugar. You should avoid these types. They don’t taste like tequila.
- Most bartenders and tequila experts recommend choosing household-produced tequila over large corporations. [2] X Research Source (We’re looking at you, Cuervo.) If you can find a home-made tequila this is 100% agave and will taste better.
- Añejos are usually more expensive than reposado or blanco , but not too expensive. You can find premium añejo under 1 million VND.
- Drink añejos at room temperature. [3] X Source of Research Adding ice dilutes the flavor and can mask many of the tequila’s various ingredients.
- If you really want to enjoy tequila, you should use a tequila cup to enjoy añejo. Also many people use a narrow-mouthed cup to drink tequila.
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 cup tomato juice (not V-8)
- 30 ml fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon pomegranate syrup
- 12 drops chili sauce, such as Chpula
- Pour 30 ml of tequila into a tequila cup or narrow-mouthed cup. Hold the base of the cup (not the stem), raise the cup to eye level and observe the color of the tequila.
- Rotate the tequila cup. Notice how the tequila clings to the sides of the cup, look for the “string of pearls” effect. [4] X Research Sources
- Take a small sip, hold the tequila in your mouth for about 10 seconds, letting the alcohol come into contact with each part of your tongue.
- Swallow and repeat the process! Do you find it attractive?
Drink Tequila, drink it fast
- Lick the skin between your thumb and index finger. Sprinkle a little salt on the skin in contact with the saliva.
- Take a cup of tequila and a slice of lemon, lick the salt in your hand and drink the tequila. Try to finish your sip because you are drinking.
- Suck on a lemon wedge after drinking tequila to lessen the taste of the alcohol. The acidity in lemons is not so obvious after drinking alcohol.
Mix Tequila in Cocktails
- Place the following ingredients in a mixing bowl and fill the pitcher half full with ice:
- 60 ml tequila blanco , oro , or reposado
- 15 ml orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Triple-Sec
- 30 ml fresh lemon juice
- 15 ml agave nectar sweetener
- Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds and pour salt into cocktail glass around the rim.
- Place the following ingredients in a mixing bowl and add ice:
- 75 ml tequila blanco
- 15ml pure vermouth
- A little bitter Angostura
- Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds and pour into martini cup.
- Garnish with piu, lime wedges, or jalapeno pepper.
- Put ice in a jar and add:
- 60 ml tequila blanco , oro , or reposado
- The orange juice is just enough to fill the cup.
- Stir the ingredients together and add two drops of pomegranate syrup to the drink by tilting the cup slightly and quickly pouring the syrup into the sides. Pomegranate syrup flows to the bottom of the cup and slowly rises to the top.
- Garnish with stirring spoon, straw and cherries with orange slices.
- Place ice in a 300 ml beaker. Add the following ingredients to the cup:
- a little salt
- 45 ml tequila blanco
- 1 teaspoon Mexican chili sauce, eg Chpula
- 30 ml Clamato
- 30 ml fresh lemon juice
- Add Mexican Squirt or grapefruit soda, and garnish with lemon wedges.
Warning
- Always drink responsibly. Do not drive while drinking and vice versa.
