You just need to choose the zombie style, then dress up both the clothes and the body, and that’s it, you’ve got enough for a masquerade party or zombie festival.

Dress up like a “classic” zombie. If you want to play the familiar zombie, just dress up the old way. Let’s be a zombie dragging every step as you walk, slow, confused with dull, lifeless eyes. This type of undead doesn’t need any special outfits. Just choose what you have available, such as old jeans and t-shirts.

Make a special zombie. Maybe you want to dress up as a zombie with a special theme, like a princess or ballerina turning into a zombie? Let’s make a disaster replica of these beautiful figures.

  • If you want to look real, use more fake blood. [1] X Research Source
  • Maybe this is where last year’s costume comes in handy – you can take it out for a zombie if you don’t mind ruining it.
  • You can also make an incredible zombie by transforming into other costumes. The undead could be a cheerleader, a pizza delivery guy or a girl on her way to the prom.

Dress up in pairs or a group of themed zombies. Maybe it would be fun to have a couple, a family or a group of friends dressed up as zombies. Some costume contests also have this category.

  • Play as a pair of undead, such as the bride and groom or famous historical couples from the dead back to earth.
  • The whole family dressed up as zombies! Your parents and siblings can happily play the role of a family of zombies coming to life. [2] X Research Source
  • You can hunt for wedding dresses at second-hand clothing stores.

Create a zombie version of a familiar character. Do you admire a superhero? A character from a fairy tale mother lullaby? Or a character from a Disney cartoon? Choose a character and turn them into the undead!

  • Make sure you have an outfit on hand that identifies the character you’re portraying. You’re bound to find something character-specific, like Red Riding Hood’s simple modified outfit.
  • It is better to use old or worn clothes. Since you’ll have to make the outfit look terrible (see below), it’s best to opt for something a little old. [3] X Research Sources

Makes clothes discolored and/or stained. The clothes of the aged undead can’t be brand new, so you’ll have to age your clothes to look real. There are several ways to age clothes using household materials.

  • Use a spray bottle to mix water with a few drops of a black color like coffee or black tea to give your clothes an old look. With light-colored fabrics, this is the most effective way to make clothes look dirty, stained and worn out. [4] X Research Sources
  • Spray the solution on the clothes to make the patch look like the real thing.
  • Use a solution of bleach mixed with water in a ratio of 1:1 to fade clothes. The zombies often stand out in the sun, so their clothes will be faded and worn out. This is a great way to age dark colored clothes.

Trim to make clothes look ragged. The undead often stumble when moving and get caught in everything around, so their clothes also have to be ragged to look like the real thing. You can use a thread remover or knife to make a few tears, or abrade a few places. Don’t be afraid to use your hands to tear a few small cuts to widen them.

  • To make the tear lines look more realistic, you can tear a few large and small places and the stitches are more or less random.
  • Remember that the costume has to be wearable, so don’t cut it too far!
  • Your suit should not be too revealing.

Dirty clothes with sand and mold. Take the clothes out, rub the dirt on to create the image of a zombie with a dirty suit. Add more mold by mixing a little liquid latex and oatmeal and letting it dry on the clothes. [5] X Research Sources

  • If you have time, you can bury your clothes outdoors for about a week.
  • You can buy liquid latex at makeup stores, supermarkets, or online.

Add blood to the costume. Talking about zombies, it is impossible to lack blood, so you should add a little blood to your clothes to increase the makeup effect. Use your hands and a sponge to dab fake or homemade blood onto clothes.

  • Step back a bit to see what your suit looks like from a distance.
  • A simple homemade fake blood recipe is to mix corn syrup with a few drops of red food coloring, then drizzle a little more chocolate syrup to give the blood a thicker, darker texture. [6] X Research Sources

Be careful over heat to scorch clothing of non-combustible materials. Carefully use the lighter to heat a few places on the clothes to create a zombie appearance.

  • Do not heat clothes while wearing them.
  • Remember to do this in a spacious place, away from flammable things and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

Create wrinkled skin with liquid latex products made specifically for makeup. Use a sponge to apply a thin layer of liquid latex to the face, then stretch the skin while drying the latex with a hair dryer. After the latex dries, you will have a tired old look on your face. [7] X Research Sources

  • Do this step before applying makeup so that when you apply cosmetics, wrinkles will appear deeper.
  • If you are allergic to latex, you can substitute with a homemade product. Mix 1 cup (240 ml) of cold water with ¼ cup (60 ml) of tapioca starch, 1 packet of unflavored gelatin, and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of condensed coconut oil. [8] X Research Sources

Use cosmetics to create a pale face. Remember to make your face pale by applying a very light skin tone cream on your face. Don’t let your natural skin tone tell everyone you’re alive!

  • Don’t paint your face blue or green, as undead skin is always earthy tones. [9] X Research Source

Color the tongue deadly with food coloring. The undead never had a ruddy tongue. A drop of black food coloring mixed with mouthwash will give you a zombie’s tongue and mouth. [10] X Research Source

Makeup deep sunken eyes. Create sunken eyes by applying dark purplish brown powder around the eye sockets and drawing along the upper and lower eyelids.

  • Use a black pencil to line the eyelids along the eyelids over the purple-brown powder for an even darker black.

Create open wounds on the face and body with liquid latex. Knead liquid latex with cotton balls, tissue or toilet paper in a mixing bowl and apply to face or arms. Wait for the mixture to dry halfway and peel it off. Dab some earth tones and add some fake blood to the mix.

  • If the fake wound is on hairy skin, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the skin before applying liquid latex. [13] X Research Source
  • At the end of the zombie costume, you just peel off the liquid latex and throw it away.

Add some blood to the undead. Use a cotton swab to apply fake blood to the body and face.

  • You can create drips or smudges of blood.
  • If you like, you can dress up to look like you’re having a nosebleed!

Creates messy and greasy hair. Don’t forget to give your hair a disgusting look to complete the undead look. Use a comb to brush your hair out and mess it up. Use hairspray to hold your hair in place. Apply conditioner when hair is dry for a greasy look. [14] X Research Source

    • You can look for tinted hairspray if you want to add a bit of black or dark brown tones to light hair. Colored hairspray is available at cosmetic stores.
    • Get creative and combine leaves or branches with your messy hair.
    • If you don’t want your hair to be damaged or have to be combed back later, buy a cheap wig that you can damage without regret.
  • Advice

    • Experiment with makeup fabrics and cosmetics in advance, and spend a lot of time preparing and correcting before going to the event.
    • Buy some fake scars to stick on your face, neck, arms, and other parts of your body to increase the effect!
    • Wash your clothes and tuck them under a stack of heavy books overnight to crease them.

    Warning

    • Test all products on a small area of your skin first to make sure they don’t cause an allergic reaction. Avoid using liquid latex products if you have a latex allergy.
    • Be careful when scaring others, especially young children and people who are easily frightened. Have fun and make people happy.
