Listen for the “tick” sound. For a normal watch, the seconds hand moves jerkily and squishy because most of them are quartz watches. The seconds hand moved clearly every step. If you listen closely there will be a “tick” sound as the seconds hand moves. In contrast, Rpex watches (and many other well-known brands) have a near-perfect smooth moving seconds hand thanks to a non-quartz automatic movement, so the Rpex doesn’t make a “tick” sound. If you hear a slow ticking from inside your watch, it is a bad sign that it is not genuine.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/5/52/Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-2-Version-2. jpg/v4-728px-Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-2-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/ images/thumb/5/52/Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-2-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch- is-Real-or-Fake-Step-2-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Look at the jerky movement of the seconds hand. As mentioned above, the seconds hand of Rpex moves as smoothly as gliding on a watch face, not jerking from second to second. Carefully examine your seconds hand – does it smoothly glide around the face of the watch? Or is it erratically slow, jerky when moving? If there are any of these signs, you are most likely buying a fake.

  • In fact, if you look closely, the real Rpex seconds hand doesn’t move perfectly smoothly . Many lines have a seconds hand speed of about 8 m/s. [1] X Research Source Some other samples have even slower rates. However, compared to the naked eye, the second hand still looks like it is gliding.

Observe the “god eye” of the day. Most (but not all) [2] X Research Source Rpex watches have a small dial or date window. Usually it’s on the right side of the watch face (near the “3 o’clock” position). To make the date easy to read, some Rpex models have a magnifying lens (called a “cyclops” lens) located on the bezel above the date dial. This detail is very difficult to do, so many fake Rpex watches still have a lens in place but if you look closely you will see that it is just regular glass. If this convex glass doesn’t make the days look bigger, it’s probably a fake.

  • In fact, Rpex’s lens magnifies the date by up to 2.5x – the date will take up almost as much as a convex window. [3] X The research source “Eyes of God” of high-end fakes will magnify the date, but not as close as the lens, and the number of days will not be in the center of the lens. Be wary of lenses that appear blurry or disproportionate.

Pull out the crown and turn counterclockwise to change the date, the time will revert to the previous day when the hand points to 6 instead of 12. This feature cannot be imitated. If that doesn’t work, it’s most likely a fake..

Genuine Rpex watches are usually made from high quality metals or crystals. Therefore, it creates stability and feels heavy and solid. If you hold an Rpex watch in your hand and it feels light, it is possible that it lacks some of the precious metals used in Rpex models, or is made from substandard materials.

Observe the transparent back. Some fake Rpex models have a transparent glass case back that allows you to see the movement inside. This transparent shell can sometimes be located underneath a removable metal cover. In fact, none of the Rpex lines have this design, so if you have an Rpex watch with a transparent case back, this is definitely a fake. Only a few Rpex models have been made with a see-through back, but they are for demonstration purposes only. [4] X Research Sources

  • It is possible that the counterfeit watch manufacturer intentionally made the back case transparent to help the suppliers sell the watch to customers by showing them the inner workings of the watch. Inexperienced customers will find it very cool and they are not at all wary.

Look for non-metallic structures. Flip your watch over. Check the back – the back of the watch should be made of high quality metal, smooth and unengraved. If the watch band is not a leather strap, it must be a high-grade metal strap construction. Any detail in the design of the watch that is made from plastic or thin metal that looks as cheap as aluminum is a fake. The less sharp edges in the machine-made process indicate that this is a mass-processed product. Rpex is made from the finest metals. There aren’t any superfluous details on the product.

  • In addition, if the back of the watch is metal but can be removed to reveal the plastic inner shell, it is not genuine.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/1/1e/Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-8.jpg/v4- 728px-Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-8.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/1/1e/ Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-8.jpg/v4-728px-Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-8. jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Test for water resistance. A surefire way to determine if a watch is a real Rpex is to see if it’s watertight. All Rpex watches are hermetically sealed – if your watch gets even a little bit wet it’s not genuine. Take a glass of water, make sure the screw is tight, drop the watch in it for a few seconds and then take it out. The watch must be in perfect working order and the glass must be free of water. If not, it’s a fake.

  • However, if your watch is fake, this test could damage it. After determining that your watch is fake, you must take it to repair or buy a new one, so you should try another way if you are not confident.
  • Note that the Submariner is the only Rpex model that is resistant to deep water – others are only water resistant in baths and showers, which can be affected under severe hydrological conditions. [5] X Research Sources

When all else fails, compare directly with the real thing. If you are still wondering about your watch, it would be helpful to compare its appearance with the standard stock. The Rpex homepage has a catalog of all products with accompanying pictures. Select the template you currently have and compare it with the “reference” images. Pay special attention to the watch face – is everything in its place? If your watch has an extra dial like chronograph or date, will it stay in place? Are the number types the same? Are the lines different?

  • If the answer is “no” to any of the above questions, it is probably a poor quality product. The Rpex brand is renowned for the quality of its craftsmanship – so noticeable defects are rare.

Find the little details that aren’t perfect

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/e/ed/Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-10.jpg/v4- 728px-Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-10.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/ed/ Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-10.jpg/v4-728px-Tell-if-a-Rpex-Watch-is-Real-or-Fake-Step-10. jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Check serial number. With the super fake Rpex, it is difficult for you to see the outside of the watch. To find out if the watch is fake or not, you need to check to find out about the small details of the watch. To get started, try to find the watch’s serial number. This requires you to remove the cord. You can push the watch band joint out of its place with a thumbscrew or similarly sized tool. However, if you are not confident, you can ask a professional. The serial number will be located between the “convex lugs” at 6 o’clock, below the glass and bezel.

  • On genuine Rpex watches, the watch band is engraved with the serial number with a diamond-cutting tip, so the numbers and letters are solid, sharp and have a certain depth to the engraved background, the color is also quite bright. Meanwhile, fake watches use etching acid, so this part is quite faint, so the letters are fuzzy, shallow and uneven. [6] X Research Sources
  • On the opposite side of the bracket, there will be a similar sequence of numbers. This is the case reference number and is accompanied by the words, “ORIG ROLEX DESIGN.” [7] X Research Sources
  • A standard Rpex watch has sharp and detailed carvings nestled between the convex lugs. Forgers will try to imitate these details, so the result as well as the serial number and engraving will look slightly concave on the case.
  • The actual serial number can tell you the watch’s production date – online sources (like this one) can help.

Look for the crown at the 6 o’clock position. Beginning in the early 2000s, Rpex began to imprint the brand crown logo into the watch crystal. [8] X Source of Research If your watch was made in the last decade or more, you can see this tiny sign of authenticity. Use a magnifying glass or jeweler’s lens to carefully examine the glass at the 6 o’clock position of the watch. Look for the crown Rpex logo – same style as the larger logo at 12 o’clock. This carving is very small and hard to see. You can see that it is easy to see if you reflect the light at an angle onto the watch face.

  • Some counterfeiters try to copy this engraving, but it is difficult to reproduce with the accuracy of a real Rpex. [9] X Research Source If this logo is large enough to be easily seen with the naked eye, it is likely a fake.

Look at the ridges around the bezel. Another sign is the smooth ridges that are often found around the bezel of the watch face. Use a magnifying glass or jeweler’s glass to examine. This carving should be soft, precise, elegant and free from defects. In addition, this vein must be etched into the metal edge. If it looks like it’s been painted or printed on the watch, it’s probably poor quality.

  • Note that, normally all watches from Rpex’s Oyster series have these markings. Cellini wristwatches usually have a non-standard design (rectangular dials, etc.) so there is no such marking.

Look for the high-quality crown logo on the dial. Most (though not all ) Rpex watches have the brand crown logo located at the top of the dial near the 12 o’clock position. Using a magnifying glass to look closely can detect errors. Real logo crafted with high quality metal. The circles at each pointed end of the crown should emerge. The border of the real crown sparkles with a different iridescence from the inside. [10] X Source of Research If your crown logo looks cheap or lacks curvature and sparkle, it could be the work of a skilled craftsman (also a sign of a fake).

Image titled Tell if a Rpex Watch is Real or Fake Step 14

Look at the perfectly precise letters on the dial. Rpex are famous for their perfection. Even small, relatively subtle imperfections can be clues that your Rpex isn’t top-notch. Examine the lettering on your wristwatch with a magnifying glass or jeweler’s lens. Each letter needs to be perfect, precise with smooth lines and curves. Space between words and letters should be regular. If you notice that any lettering looks slightly uneven or blurred, this is an indication that the watch has been manufactured using sub-optimal printing technology and is probably not a true Rpex. means.

  • If there are any typos it is a clear sign of a forgery.

Rate the authenticity of the seller

Beware of substandard packaging. When it comes to Rpex, everything has to be elegant, dignified, and perfect. This even includes the carrying case. Rpex watches come in high-end jewelry boxes that usually include a slot to hold and secure the watch as well as a small cloth to clean and polish it. All packaging has Rpex name and logo. The box comes with a manual and warranty. [11] X Research Sources If your watch lacks any of these, it may not be authentic.

  • Buying a watch on the road is a big risk – as there is no packaging, there is no endorsement.

Watch out for shady places that sell. When buying expensive things, you need to use your senses. A jeweler or big dealer seems more trustworthy than a curbside seller. Rpex products cost thousands of dollars, so you have reason to assume that whoever sells them must have great resources and own a business. If you’re not sure where to go, refer to the online list of certified retailers here.

  • Pawnshops are an unpredictable place – maybe they have real Rpex, maybe they don’t, depending on who sold it to them. Some stores go to great lengths to ensure that they only sell genuine products, while others ignore them. If you’re wondering how trustworthy a pawn shop is, it’s a good idea to read online reviews before making a transaction.

Beware of unusually cheap prices. Rpex is about perfectly crafted watches – they never come cheap. A price tag that seems too good for such a watch may not be good at all. The most expensive Rpex watch in the world is sold for more than a million dollars (equivalent to more than 20 billion), the cheapest is also more than 4000 dollars (more than 80 million dong). [12] X Source of Research[13] X Source of Research If you are offered an Rpex watch for as little as 2 million VND it doesn’t matter what the seller’s explanation is – something is wrong on the watch or it’s not the real thing.

  • Do not accept excuses of unscrupulous sellers. If they say it’s cheap on the grounds of picking it up or it’s a gift, walk away. There is no luck falling from the sky and with only a small amount of money you can buy an Rpex.

When all of the above fails, take your watch to an experienced jeweler. Sometimes even though you know what to look for, nothing is certain. In this case, an experienced and reliable jeweler or watch seller can help you appreciate details that the average person cannot grasp. If you have a good relationship with these people, there may be no cost. Jewelry appraisal service is not cheap, but it is still worth the money for the value of an Rpex watch.

  • In some countries, jewelry appraisals cost more than $180 an hour. [14] X Research Source Due to the nature of such a service, it is more beneficial to bring a lot of items to check.
  • Use this service only if it is hourly, product-based, or a contract based on scheduled time. Never believe if they say service fee is a percentage of the value of the jewelry – this is a form of fraud. [15] X Research Source

  • Advice

    • Take them to a professional and have them distinguish.
    • Google the model and serial number and compare it with the watch on your hand.
    • Counterfeit watch boxes are often made of cheap wood and have poor quality suede-like padding.
    • Another detail to consider is the seller. Be wary if they say this is a foreign-bought watch or a gift, those are suspicious signs.

    Attention

    • Do not wear the watch to sleep, play sports or exercise vigorously because it can scratch the glass.
    • Identify the traffickers through lottery programs, and so on. Rpex does not have those services.
    • Avoid losing your watch.
    • It is recommended to remove the watch before showering, unless your watch is waterproof.
    • Do not open the watch case yourself, as you may damage it.
