Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a series of physical and psychological symptoms that occur a few days before menstruation. On the other hand, egg implantation occurs due to the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus, which means you are pregnant. Both premenstrual syndrome and implantation can occur at the same time in the menstrual cycle, making it difficult to tell the difference between them. However, if you pay special attention, you will notice a few differences.

Consider taking a home pregnancy test for a definite answer. The most effective way to tell if you’re pregnant or simply PMS is to take a home pregnancy test. Pregnancy test kits are available in pharmacies and come with very simple instructions for use. [16] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

  • You can take a pregnancy test a few days before your normal period or when you want to determine if you are experiencing implantation or premenstrual syndrome. Some pregnancy test methods give accurate results as soon as they are tested just a few days before your period. However, to be sure, you should wait about 1 week after your normal period. • Most blood tests only detect hormones a few days earlier than a regular home pregnancy test. So, if it’s not necessary, you shouldn’t ask for a blood test just out of curiosity. [18] X Trusted Source Mayo Clinic Go to Source

Recognize the difference between implantation and menstrual bleeding. No matter how heavy or light your bleeding is, you’ll definitely know what a normal period should look like. On the other hand, bleeding due to egg implantation will be less than a normal period because it does not have to peel off the lining of the uterus, nor does it last as long as a normal period. Implantation bleeding usually occurs before a normal menstrual period.
