Know what real communication is. Communication is the process of transferring signals/messages between the sender and the receiver through different methods (writing, non-verbal cues, speech). It is also the mechanism we use to establish and change relationships.

Have the courage to say what you think. Be confident knowing that you can make a valuable contribution to the conversation. Take time each day to be aware of your ideas and feelings so that you can fully communicate them to others. Those who hesitate to speak because they do not feel the information they are giving will be valuable need not fear. What is important or valuable to one person may not be meaningful to another and may be extremely useful to another.

Practice. Advanced communication skills development begins with simple interactions. Communication skills can be practiced daily in contexts ranging from social to work. New skills take time to develop, but each time you use your communication skills, open yourself up to future opportunities and partnerships.

Look straight into the eyes . Whether you are speaking or listening, looking into the eyes of the person you are talking to can make interactions more successful. Eye contact shows interest and encourages your partner to care about you again.

  • One technique to help with this is to look directly into one eye of the listener and then to the other eye. Switching back and forth between the eyes makes your eyes appear to sparkle. Another trick is to visualize a “T” area on the listener’s face, with the horizontal bar being the imaginary line across the eyebrows and the vertical line running between the bridge of the nose. Keep your eyes in that “T” zone.

Use gestures. These include gestures with your hands and face. Let’s make your whole body talk. Use smaller gestures for individuals and small groups. Gestures should be larger for large groups.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/3/3b/Develop-Good-Communication-Skills-Step-6.jpg/v4-728px-Develop-Good-Communication-Skills- Step-6.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/3b/Develop-Good-Communication-Skills-Step-6.jpg/v4-728px-Develop- Good-Communication-Skills-Step-6.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Don’t send messy messages. Make your words, gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice unified. Disciplining someone while laughing sends a messy and therefore ineffective message. If you have to deliver a negative message, match your words, facial expressions, and tone of voice.

Be aware of your body language. Body language can say more than words. An open stance with your arms relaxed at your sides lets everyone around you know that you’re open and ready to hear what they have to say.

  • On the other hand, standing with arms crossed and stooped indicates that you are not interested in the conversation or are not ready to communicate. Often, communication can be stopped before it begins with body language indicating that you don’t want to talk.
  • Proper posture and an open stance can even make difficult conversations go more smoothly.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/3/37/Develop-Good-Communication-Skills-Step-8.jpg/v4-728px-Develop-Good-Communication-Skills- Step-8.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/37/Develop-Good-Communication-Skills-Step-8.jpg/v4-728px-Develop- Good-Communication-Skills-Step-8.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Show constructive beliefs and attitudes. The attitude you put into communication will have a huge impact on how you stay calm and interact with others. Choose an attitude of honesty, patience, optimism, sincerity, respect and acceptance of others. Be sensitive to other people’s feelings, and trust the abilities of others.

Develop effective listening skills: A person not only needs to be able to speak effectively, but must also be able to listen to others and engage in communication from the point of view of the speaker. Avoid just listening to the end of the sentence so that you can utter your thoughts or ideas while the other person is speaking.

Use Your Words

Clearly pronounce every word you say. Speak clearly and do not mumble. If people are always asking you to repeat yourself, try to speak better in a different style.

Correct pronunciation. People will judge your ability by the vocabulary you use. If you’re not sure how to say a word, don’t use it. Improve your vocabulary by reading new words every day

Use the right words. If you are unsure of the meaning of a word, do not use it. Grab a dictionary and start the habit of learning a new word every day. Use it occasionally in your conversations during the day.

Speak slowly. People will sense that you are nervous and insecure if you speak quickly. However, be careful not to speak so slowly that people have to end your sentences just to get you finished.

Voice development. A high or low voice is not considered a powerful voice. In fact, your high-pitched, low-pitched voice can make you a target for fussy coworkers or make others look down on you. Start practicing to lower the pitch of your voice. Try singing, but do it an octave lower on all your favorite songs. Practice it, and after a while, your voice will start to lower.

Give life to your voice. Avoid a monotone voice and use a rising and falling voice. Your pitch should rise and fall steadily. Radio DJs are often good examples of this.

    Use the appropriate volume. Use the appropriate volume for the context. Speak softer when you are alone and the setting is intimate. Speak louder when you talk to larger groups or over larger spaces.
