Determining the sex of puppies will not be difficult if you know some characteristics of their body. Remember to handle the dog gently and carefully. If not in a hurry, wait and determine the sex of the dog when they are 3-4 weeks old. Too much contact with puppies when they haven’t had enough time with the mother dog can cause them to be shunned by the mother dog.

Gently lift the puppy. Newborn and young dogs are very weak. Be very careful when handling them. A puppy’s hearing and eyesight are very weak at just a few weeks old, so they will be very nervous or panic when you pick and pick them up. • Never pick up a puppy’s tail! Put your hand under the dog’s belly as deeply as possible to provide solid support when you pick it up.
  • Limit holding puppies for about a week or two after birth. Holding the puppy too much will make the mother dog unhappy and negatively affect the puppies. [2] X Trusted Source American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Go to source
  • If possible, you should wait until the puppies are at least 3-4 weeks old before checking their sex. At this time, they have had enough time to bond with the mother dog and have also grown. [3] X Research Sources

Cup your hand and hold the puppy. You will lay the puppy on its back in the palm of your hand, with its paws facing up. Remember to support the dog’s whole body so as not to affect their spine. Do not hold the dog too tightly. [4] X Research Sources

  • It will be easier if someone helps hold the puppies so you can watch them.
  • You can also spread a warm towel on the table and lay the puppy on its back on it. The towel will help keep the puppy warm. [5] X Research Sources

Determine quickly. Newborn puppies cannot maintain body temperature for the first few weeks after birth. They get cold very easily. You should not hold the puppy away from the mother dog for too long, at most it should only be 5-10 minutes. [6] X Research Source

Watch for signs of stress. If the puppy shows extreme stress, such as meowing or struggling a lot, you should promptly return it to the mother dog’s nest. The mother dog may also become stressed if she is not used to humans holding her pups. If you notice signs of stress in the mother dog, such as a lot of barking, you should return the puppy to her. Observe the dog’s belly. You will see their “navel” or umbilical cord scar. A puppy’s belly button is usually located in the middle of the belly, just below the rib cage. [9] X Research Source If the puppy is only a few days old, it may still have the umbilical cord. As the umbilical cord shrivels and falls off—usually after a few days—there will be a small scar on the dog’s belly. This scar is lighter in color and slightly thicker than the surrounding skin.

Look below the puppy’s umbilical cord or umbilical cord scar. If you are a male dog, you will see another small lump of flesh about 2.5 cm below the dog’s navel. This is the foreskin or the skin that covers the penis. There is a small hole in the center of the foreskin. [10] X Research Source

  • A dog’s foreskin may have some hair around it or even on it.
  • Do not attempt to pull or remove the foreskin of male puppies until they are at least 6 months old. Dogs are a “penis bone” species, so you could injure your dog’s penis or penile bone if you try to forcefully peel off their foreskin. [11] X Research Source

Test the testicles. Puppies will have testicles, but you won’t be able to feel them until they’re 8 weeks old. [12] X Research Source If the testicles could be located, they would be located between the dog’s hind legs.

  • Depending on the puppy’s size, their testicles will be the size of a lima bean. By 8 weeks of age, a dog’s testicles are usually enclosed in the scrotum.

Touch the dog’s belly. Unlike male dogs, the female dog’s belly is usually smooth (except for the umbilical cord scar). Bitches don’t have foreskin.. [13] X Research Source

Check your dog’s anus. A dog’s anus is located just below the tail. If you are a male dog, you will only see one hole, the anal opening. If you’re a bitch, you’ll see a raised area of flesh just below the anal opening. That’s the dog’s vulva. [14] X Research Source

  • The bitch’s vulva is very small and looks like a leaf. It has a straight slit and is usually located right between the dog’s hind legs. A dog’s vulva may have some fluff. [15] X Research Source

Do not observe the dog’s udder. Just like humans, both male and female dogs have breasts. This feature on the body does not indicate their gender. [16] X Research Source

Ask a veterinarian. Puppies should receive their first vaccination within 6 weeks of age. [17] X Research Source If you cannot determine the sex of your dog, you can ask your veterinarian to help you when taking your dog in for regular checkups.
  • Advice

    • It’s easier to watch when someone else is holding the dog. Remember to support the whole body of the dog.
    • Running a finger along a dog’s belly is one way to feel their foreskin. If there are two “blobs” on the dog’s belly, one just below the other, it’s a male dog. If the dog’s belly has only one “bulb” floating (the dog’s navel), it’s a bitch.

    Warning

    • Holding puppies too much during the first few weeks of birth can cause the mother dog to abandon them. Therefore, you should not hold a puppy unless absolutely necessary.
