The cockatiel (also known as the Malayan or Australian cockatoo) is a native Australian bird, related to other breeds such as the Galah cockatoo and the black cockatoo. Adult “regular gray” cockatoos (grey body and yellow head) will be relatively easy to distinguish based on their plumage. Other colored cockatoos can be a little more difficult to identify, but there are behavioral differences and small signs that you can rely on for guesswork. Try to use a lot of information instead of relying on just one trait, as each individual cockatoo has very different variations in structure and behavior.

Wait until the bird grows adult feathers. Male and female Malayan parrots when young look very similar. After about six to nine months, the birds will shed their feathers for the first time and grow new coats of feathers, which are often more colorful and differentiated between males and females.

  • Dull or discolored plumage can be a sign of undernutrition, although sometimes it’s just that the bird needs to shed a few times before the new, brighter plumage can be seen.
  • Do not provide nests for juveniles, as this may stimulate egg-laying behavior or premature mating that is harmful to the female.

Check that your Malayan parrots have standard plumage. The normal non-mutant Gray Malaya will have a gray body, a yellow head, and an orange circle on the cheeks. These parrots can be identified with the steps below. If your parrot doesn’t fit the descriptions above, it’s possible that their ancestors were bred to have strange coat colors, and you’ll face even greater challenges. Some of the identifying traits for these parrots are discussed below, but you’ll usually have to rely on behavioral cues.

Look closely at the parrot’s tail. In the common gray cockatoo, the adult female (and all juveniles) have streaks on the underside of the tail feathers. These streaks are usually horizontal stripes alternating with gray/dark gray or white/grey or yellow/gray, but some females have irregular dots or spots on a gray background. If you can’t see anything, pick up the bird with its tail in the light and examine it closely. If you still can’t see any marks, it’s probably a male.

  • The Lutinos, or white and pale yellow birds that still have two circles on their cheeks, can be distinguished by the yellow dots under the wings and the yellow streaks under the tail in the female. You need clear light to see these signs. [1] X Research Source

Compare the color of feathers on the bird’s face. In the common gray cockatoo, the male’s face is usually more prominent with vibrant orange circles on a bright yellow background. The female parrot’s face has a lighter orange circle on a light gray or yellow background. [2] X Research Source

  • In some parrot breeds, only the male has yellow feathers on his face after molting, while the female’s face is gray like an immature bird or brownish. [3] X Research Sources
  • In mutant Malayan parrots that have a white face but not a white body, sometimes the male does not have a ring on the face, and the female has a pale circle on her cheeks that resembles the color of the feathers on the bird’s body. [4] X Research Sources

Compare feathers on birds. In the grey-bodied Malayan parrots, the males are usually a darker gray and the females a lighter grey. This is one of the least reliable methods of discriminating, but can help confirm suspicions from previous tests. Parrots with non-gray feathers are virtually indistinguishable in this way.

  • In some breeds, the female also has pale yellow spots on the underside of the wings. [5] X Research Sources
  • In pearl parrots that have white spots on their bodies that are not white, the male will usually lose these “pearls” after the first molt, while the female will remain. [6] X Research Sources

Take the parrot to the vet. Final examination based on anatomy should only be performed by a veterinarian. Inexperienced people can seriously hurt their parrots trying to do this, and are also less able to tell the difference. Ask your veterinarian to determine the sex of your parrot. Veterinarians can check the shape of the pelvis, whereby female parrots usually have a wider pelvis. However, this is still not a completely reliable method, because each individual is very different.

  • The older the parrot is, the more likely this method will be to give accurate results, especially if the breeder’s adult parrots may have laid eggs. [7] X Research Sources
  • If you want to be sure, ask for a DNA test.

Listen to the voice of the bird. This principle is not entirely certain and takes a long time, but parrots that like to learn to talk are usually males. [8] X Source of Study Whether or not they have learned to say phrases, males are more likely to sing and whistle, while females are less likely to sing and squeal more often than males.

Let the bird look in the mirror. Male cockatoos often stand in front of the mirror, gesturing, calling, or examining the mirror. If the bird quickly loses interest in the mirror, it is probably the female.

Observe the courting behavior of the male bird. In general, male cockatoos are usually excited to flirt with their mates, but sometimes they also exhibit these behaviors even when there are no other parrots around: [9] X Research Source

  • Tap beaks on objects to make a loud sound to attract the attention of the female.
  • Struggling to and fro while whistling or tapping beaks, accompanied by bouncing and/or bouncing nods.
  • Spread the wings away from the torso, forming a heart shape when viewed from behind.

Observe the cuddly behavior of the female bird. Females are generally less aggressive in mating or mating and generally do not exhibit these behaviors unless a male is around: [10] X Source

  • Perched on a low branch, squeaking softly, tail raised high.
  • Beak with a male bird to which he is attached or intends to mate.

Watch out for self-satisfying behaviors. Most experienced birders have noticed that birds rub their graves on perches, objects, and even their owners’ hands. Some do this every day, sometimes even more often. This “masturbation” behavior is mostly seen in males, but there are occasional exceptions.

  • The male often clicks on something or stands on top of an object and rubs his point against it.
  • The female can act similarly, but can also press against an object with her tail raised and her body bent forward.

Observe egg laying. Obviously only females lay eggs, but this doesn’t help you distinguish if an egg appears in a multi-bird cage. If you want to determine the sex of your parrot with certainty, you should keep each bird a cage and provide a separate nest or point the camera lens at the bird’s nest to record their behavior.

    • Do not provide nests for hens under 18 months of age, as egg laying in immature birds often causes serious health problems for birds.
    • Removing the eggs will stimulate the bird to lay more eggs.
    • Remember that bird eggs may have been fertilized in the event of obvious mating behavior.

  • Advice

    • If you buy a Malayan parrot at a pet store or bird breeder, they usually determine the sex of the bird when it’s sold. Although this method is not 100% accurate unless a DNA test is available, the guesswork of experienced breeders is usually highly reliable.
    • Females seem to have a tendency to bite, but this behavior is largely dependent on the temperament of the individual.
    • If a cockatoo lays more than 8 eggs and more than two times a year, it is probably in an unusually fertile pattern. This condition can lead to vitamin A and calcium deficiencies. In this case, your veterinarian may be able to inject the bird with medication if alternative methods such as nesting a fake egg don’t work.
    • You should put the cuttlefish in the cage so that the bird can train its beak and provide calcium for the bird.

    Warning

    • Breeding can cause serious health problems if the female is less than 18 months old. Macaws that are not fully mature are also unlikely to be good parents. [11] X Source of Research If you have multiple male and female Malayan parrots or have not yet determined the sex, you should keep them separate until the birds are adults, or watch for signs of mating behavior.
    • Paired Malayan parrots do occasionally fight, but rarely seriously enough to get injured. [12] X Research Source
