Skin tone, also known as skin tone, is completely different from skin color – which has only 3 color groups (white, tan, and dark). Skin tone does not change whether you are exposed to a lot of sun, or when your skin becomes white in winter and tan in summer. There are 3 different skin tones – cold, hot and neutral. [1] X Research Resources Knowing your skin tone helps a lot – it helps you choose the right lipstick color, find the hair color that makes you stand out the most, and know how to choose the colors of your clothes to make you look real attract.

Wash your face, then wait 15 minutes. Your skin should be clean and free of makeup, lotions or toners. The skin also needs to rest for about 15 minutes prior to the test, as the skin may become flushed after being rubbed several times while washing the face and it is difficult to see the true skin tone.

Find a natural light source. Light can make skin look different – skin will appear yellow or green and affect the determination of skin tone. Choosing a sunny spot to find your skin tone will help you avoid misperception.

  • Try sitting by the window.
  • If you have outdoor seating, go outside.

See the color of the veins in the wrist. This is a quick way to determine your skin tone if you can clearly see the veins. Place your hand at a natural light source and see what color the veins show. [2] X Research Source

  • If veins cannot be classified as green or blue, your skin tone is neutral. When you have honey skin, your skin tone often falls into this group. [3] X Research Sources
  • If the veins are green, your skin has a warm tone. [4] X Research Sources
  • If your veins are blue or purple, you have a cool skin tone. [5] X Research Sources

Observe the skin’s response to sunlight. Does your skin tan easily? Is your skin sunburned or freckled? The amount of melanin in your skin affects your skin’s response to sunlight and helps you determine your skin tone. [6] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

  • If your skin tans easily and rarely burns, you have more melanin and a warm or neutral skin tone. [7] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source
  • If your skin burns easily and doesn’t tan, you have less melanin and have a cooler skin tone. [8] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source
  • Some women with dark skin are not prone to sunburn but still have cool skin tones. Try some more tests to determine your skin tone. [9] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

Hold a blank sheet of paper level with the face. Look in the mirror and see how your skin contrasts when placed next to the white sheet. The skin will be yellow, red, or flushed, or without these colors will look pale.

  • If your skin is yellow or pale when placed next to a white sheet of paper, you have a warm skin tone.
  • If it looks pink, flushed, or red, you have a cool skin tone.
  • If your skin looks pale, you probably have a honey-toned skin with a neutral tone. The brown and golden tones of the skin combine to create this effect. [10] X Research Source You may find that your skin looks like it belongs in the neutral and warm tones group, as your skin tone falls between these two ranges. [11] X Research Source
  • If you can’t tell if your skin is yellow, honey, or pink, you have a neutral tone. Skin with neutral tones is suitable for foundation and warm/cold tones. [12] X Research Source

Use gold foil and foil or metal to find out skin tones. Hold the gold foil in front of you so that it reflects the light onto your skin. Observe if the yellow paper makes the face look pale or pale or makes the skin look fresher. Then try with foil.

  • If you look best with gold foil, you have a warm skin tone.
  • If the reflection from the foil makes your skin lighter, you have a cool skin tone.
  • If you don’t see a difference (both foil and gold foil will make you stand out), you have a neutral skin tone. [13] X Research Source

Ask a friend to look at the skin behind the ear. If you have acne, redness, or another condition that prevents you from seeing your skin tone, ask a friend to look at the skin behind your ears, as this is a less affected area.

  • Have them examine the skin at the edge of the small fold behind the ear.
  • If your skin is yellow, you have a warm skin tone.
  • If your skin is pink or flushed, you have a cool skin tone.
  • If they find it difficult to see, they can keep a white sheet of paper near the skin. This will help them see if the skin is yellow or pink.
