Steps

Take body measurements. Measure your bust: you can measure your hips or waist, depending on whether you want a high or low waisted skirt. Call this measure X. Then you measure the length of the skirt you want and call this measurement Y.

  • X = waist/hips; Y = skirt length

Calculate A, B, C. Example:

  • With hip circumference X = 36 (91cm) and length Y = 30 (76cm).

  • The top bottom edge of trapezoid A should be about 30% of the result of the X measurement multiplied by 1.5 after adding 3 inches (7.6 cm) for the seam. (Use the formula A = [1.5(X + 3)] * .3 .) A = 36 + 3 = 39, 39 * 1.5 = 59, 59 * .3 = 18
  • The height of trapezoid B should be equal to the Y measure plus 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) of seam. (Use the formula B = Y + 1.5 .) B = 30 + 1.5 = 32
  • The bottom of trapezoid C should be 40% of the X measurement after adding 3 inches (7.6 cm) for the seam. (Use the formula C = [1.5(X + 3)] * .4 .) C = 36 + 3 = 39, 39 * 1.5 = 59, 59 * .4 = 24

Draw a trapezoid on a piece of paper with dimensions as A, B, C values.
Use the shape on the paper to cut 3 trapezoidal pieces of fabric.
Sew the pieces of fabric together at the two blue seams in the image below.

  • Remember to sew the right side of the fabric! Sew on the wrong side of the fabric so that when you wear the skirt, the stitching won’t show.

Sew on the waistband, bottom hem, and two skirts as desired. Button and sew on the skirt at the red dot as shown in the image above. The dot on the left is the hole and the dot in the middle is where you’ll button, you should sew the button on the inside of the dress.
Sew the two twine like the wavy green line in the image above.
  • Then wrap the dress up, button it up, tie it, and you’ve got your very own wrap dress!
  • Advice

    • You can also finish the bottom hem of the skirt after wrapping it up. This way, you will be able to adjust the skirt to fit your body.
    • This dress can be designed in any way, depending on how you sew it, the skirt can be worn to the office, to the beach or just a walk down the street. Also, if you are bored and have nothing to do, designing and sewing a mini skirt is not a bad idea.
