Use a portable toothbrush. Some people with bad breath or are aware of their breath carry a toothbrush and a small tube of cream. If you don’t have toothpaste, you should also know that brushing your teeth with plain water can also reduce the smell of bacteria that accumulate after eating. Portable toothbrushes are available at most grocery stores or drugstores. [1] X Research Source

  • It’s better to carry a small bag of single-use brushes, so they won’t get dirty and are more hygienic as each one is disposable.

Floss. This is a supplement or alternative to brushing your teeth, you can easily find a suitable place to floss like the toilet. Many types of floss have a minty aftertaste to help freshen breath.

  • Dentists recommend that people floss after each meal to ensure that leftovers do not get stuck between teeth. If this seems overwhelming, you should at least brush your teeth once a day to combat bad breath – preferably before bedtime. [2] X Research Source
  • Flossing after every meal is one of the best ways to treat bad breath.
  • Consider carrying a flosser such as dental floss for convenient use at all times.

Use Listerine or another antibacterial mouthwash. Listerine comes in a small bottle so you can easily put it in your back pocket or handbag. Gargle for 20 seconds and then spit it out. Mouthwash works against bacteria that cause bad breath and freshens breath. Be sure to choose products that are advertised as strong against gingivitis and/or plaque. • Listerine mouthwash, which dissolves right on the tongue, is designed to quickly eliminate bad breath but is also quite powerful.

Chew sugar-free gum. Sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production so it will prevent dry mouth. A dry mouth often leads to bad breath because bacteria can’t get out of the mouth. Gum also helps remove food particles from between the teeth. However, chewing sugar-free gum is not a substitute for oral hygiene, so you should not skip brushing or flossing. Chew herbs like mint, parsley, basil or wintergreen. They do not clean the mouth but will fight unpleasant odors because they have a very strong scent. This method only has short-term effects, so it cannot be considered a long-term solution. [6] X Source of Study You should also watch out for debris left by herbs in your mouth, because bad breath can’t be exchanged for bits of parsley stuck between your teeth.

Chew nuts. Some nuts have a very strong scent and have a rough surface that can remove food plaque in between teeth, tongue and gums. Fennel seeds have an amazing ability to overpower odors. The licorice-scented anise seeds are truly antiseptic seeds. [7] X Research Sources

Drink water with lemon. More than just a healthy, flavorful alternative to soda, this acidic solution has a powerful effect on bad breath. Since one of the main causes of bad breath is dry mouth (which often happens in the morning), water helps to moisten the mouth and eliminate most odors.

  • Squeeze a lemon into the water so that the scent of the lemon helps to overpower the odor. The acidity of lemon prevents bacteria from accumulating in the mouth. [8] X Research Sources

Use Waterpik water flosser. This device is often used in place of dental floss. It can spray water with high pressure to wash away food plaque stuck in the teeth, in addition, it can also be used to wash the tongue. Usage is simple: go to the toilet, fill the tank with water and start spraying. If you have mouthwash, you can add more to the water tank to enhance the effect of eliminating bad breath. Rinse mouth with water. Then wipe each tooth with a tissue, or wipe with the inside of a shirt cloth. This wipe makes your teeth very shiny, like you just brushed your teeth, then rinsed your mouth. If you have a brown sandpaper, you can wipe your tongue from the inside out to remove the plaque on the tongue. [10] X Research Source

Ask someone else to help. Most people breathe into their hands to smell the air coming out, but most of them can only smell the hand. Because the passage in the nasal cavity connects to the mouth, this technique cannot accurately indicate the smell of the breath. The best way to recognize bad breath is to ask someone close to you for help. Ask someone close to you to smell through your breath, so you won’t be too embarrassed. No need to exhale too hard, just exhale quickly. [11] X Research Source

Lick the inside of the wrist. Step into a corner and lick the inside of your wrist. Since the wrist rarely touches the objects around, it is the right place to help you recognize the smell of your breath. Wait until the saliva is dry and then sniff your wrist, this is one of the most accurate ways to know your breath. [12] X Research Source

Check with a scraper. Take a spoon and place it face down on the back of your tongue, slowly moving the spoon to the front of your mouth. Now you check the material just collected on the spoon. If it’s clear then you don’t have bad breath, but you’ll usually get a milky or even yellowish substance. The substance just obtained is a layer of bacteria that accumulates on the tongue, which is the cause of bad breath. [13] X Research Source

  • It’s important that you rub the back of your tongue while brushing your teeth, as this is the main breeding ground for bad breath bacteria.
  • Similarly, you can perform this test with a drugstore swab, but in everyday situations a spoon is easier to find.

Use a Halimeter bad breath meter. The principle of operation of the machine is to find the presence of a sulfur gas mixture in the breath. Volatile sulfur compounds are often found in our mouths, but if they exist in high concentrations, they will cause bad breath. The gaseous mixture of sulfur smells like rotten eggs, obviously you don’t want your mouth to smell like that during an important meeting. Usually the dentist will do this test but if you really want to own a Halimeter then you can buy it. The machine is very expensive. [14] X Research Source

Ask your dentist to do a gas chromatographic analysis. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the content of sulfur and other chemical compounds in the mouth. This is the most efficient test and the measured value is the gold standard for evaluation. [15] X Research Source

While observing your mouth to find the cause of bad breath, you may notice white speckles sticking to the inside of your throat on either side of the uvula (the lump of meat that swings at the back of your mouth), if So you need to see a dentist. These spots are also known as tonsil stones. They form from the calcification of food, mucus, and bacterial clumps. This condition is quite common and you have to take them out carefully.

  • Advice

    • Give up smoking. One of the leading causes of bad breath is smoking and the use of tobacco products.
    • Avoid eating onions, garlic and foods that can create an unpleasant odor in your breath. They have a very strong smell so they will stay in the mouth for a long time.
