The Composter is a relatively new item added with Minecraft 1.14, the Village & Pillage Update. It’s a job site block, meaning it provides employment for Villagers and allows them to run farms.
However the Composter is incredibly useful to have in your own base too, and luckily they’re super cheap to craft. They’re so good to have because Composters allow you to recycle your leftover nature and food items into Bone Meal.

How to Craft a Composter in Minecraft
Crafting a Composter is simple, all you require is 3 wooden planks and 4 fences. If you don’t want to craft one, you can often find them at villages where you can steal them from a farm.
In your crafting table, place the 3 wooden planks along the bottom 3 spaces. Then add 2 fences to each side of the table, using the image above as a reference. It’s a good idea to place the Composter where you’ll use it most, which is likely going to be at any of your farms.
How to Use the Composter in Minecraft
Once you’ve placed a Composter down in Minecraft, you can now start to use it to make Bone Meal. All you have to do is right click the Composter with an item in your hand that you want to fill it with.
A list of items that you can currently place into a Composter to turn it into Bone Meal are Seeds, Grass, Leaves, Saplings, Berries, Cactus, Melons, Sugar Canes, Tall Grass, Vines, Apples, Beetroots, Carrots, Flowers, Lily Pads, Mushrooms, Potatoes, Pumpkins, Wheat, Potato, Bread, Cookies, Hay Bales, Cake, Pumpkin Pies and a few more items.
Some of these items have a percent change to add another level of Compost, with Cake and Pumpkin Pie having a 100% chance. While smaller items such as seeds and grass have a 30% chance.
Once the Composter is full, just interact with it again in order to retrieve the Bone Meal. Using a Hopper will cause the Bone Meal to automatically be harvested.
