This article shows you how to use Windows Media Player to copy files from a CD to your computer and burn the files to a CD. To do this, your computer must have the Windows Media Player program and a DVD player.

Insert the CD into your computer’s DVD player. Place the CD on which you want to copy files into your computer’s DVD player with the sticker facing up.

  • If your computer’s drive doesn’t have an external “DVD” written on it, it’s not the drive you need and can’t be used to copy or burn CDs.
  • If Windows Media Player opens automatically when a CD is inserted into your computer, you will skip the next two steps.
  • If a window opens automatically or another program automatically runs, you need to close the window before continuing.

Open Start Windows Start

Open Windows Media Player. Type windows media player and click the orange, blue, and white Windows Media Player icon at the top of the Start menu.

  • If you don’t see Windows Media Player above the Start menu, it means the program isn’t installed on your computer. Windows Media Player doesn’t come pre-installed on some versions of Windows 10, but a fresh install of Windows 10 will add Windows Media Player to your computer.

Change the data copy directory if necessary. If you want to change the directory where the data copied from the CD is saved, do the following:

  • Click Rip settings at the top of the window.
  • Click More options… in the selection list.
  • Click Change… in the upper right corner of the window

Click Rip CD (Copy CD) at the top of the window. This will ask Windows Media Player to start copying the CD’s files to your computer.

  • Copying can take about a minute (or longer) for each typical song.

Click OK when prompted. This is a message that the files have been copied from the CD to the computer.

Select the format of the CD. While you usually want to use Windows Media Player to create a car-playable music disc or CD player, you can also use Windows Media Player to create a CD as storage:

Add a few songs to the CD. You can add the equivalent of 80 minutes of music playback to a regular music CD; so click and drag your favorite songs from the main window into the “Burn” section.
