Cook sweet potatoes in the microwave

Wash the sweet potato. Place the sweet potato under the tap and use a produce brush to clean the dirt. Remember to wash the potatoes thoroughly. Then use a paper towel to dry the water.

  • This is very important if you want to eat the skin of the sweet potato as well.
Use a fork to poke the outside of the sweet potato skin. Pierce the whole potato about 6 to 8 times. When you cook sweet potatoes in the microwave, they heat up very quickly, and steam collects between the flesh and the skin. If you don’t poke a hole in the potato to let the steam out, the sweet potato will explode in the microwave.

  • You only need to make small holes in the skin so you don’t have to use a fork to dig deep inside the sweet potato.
  • Alternatively, you can also use a knife to make an “X” cut on the potato skin.
  • You really can’t skip this step!
Wrap the sweet potato to cook. Take a paper towel and moisten it with cold water. Squeeze out the excess water being careful not to tear the towel. Place the paper on a microwave-safe shallow dish and place the potatoes in the center of the paper. Wrap the potatoes by folding the edges of the paper towel inward.

  • Wet paper towels will create a steaming effect when you cook potatoes in the microwave.
  • In addition, it also helps to retain moisture in the potato so that the potato does not shrink and makes the skin soft.
  • Don’t use foil when cooking in the microwave! Don’t wrap sweet potatoes in foil when you microwave them. This will spark and possibly cause a serious fire. The microwave oven will be damaged if you do so.

Place the dish in the microwave and select the cooking time. Cooking time will depend on the size of the potato and the power of the microwave. Most medium or large potatoes need about 8-12 minutes at full power. [1] X Research Source

  • You will start cooking the potatoes for 5 minutes, then remove and turn the underside of the potatoes up so that both sides cook evenly. Continue to microwave the potatoes for an additional 3-5 minutes, depending on how tender they are at the time.
  • Then, if the potatoes are still not fully cooked, microwave them for 1 minute at a time, checking each time. [2] X Research Source
  • If you’re cooking multiple potatoes at once, you’ll need to increase the cooking time by two-thirds. For example, if 1 large potato takes 10 minutes to cook, then 2 large potatoes will need about 16-17 minutes.
  • If you want a crispy skin, you can microwave the potatoes for 5-6 minutes, then remove the wrapper and bake for about 20 minutes in the oven preheated to 200°C. This method is great when you want crispy potato skins and cut the cooking time in half. [2] X Research Source
Check the ripeness of the potatoes. Be careful when removing sweet potatoes from the microwave. Both the potatoes and the plate were very hot! The potatoes will be firm but not too soft. If the potatoes are still too hard, continue to microwave for 1 minute each time until cooked evenly. You can check if the potato is cooked by inserting a fork in the center of the potato, if you can pierce it easily but the center is still a bit firm then the potato is ready to eat.

  • If you’re not sure, cook until the potatoes are just cooked through, as they will burn or explode in the microwave.

Let the potatoes cool. Remove the outer layer of tissue paper and discard. It is best to let the potatoes cool for about 5 minutes. This helps the inside of the potato to cook evenly with the amount of heat remaining in the layers of the potato. In addition, it also makes the potatoes soft and spongy on the inside without drying out on the outside.

  • If you have to keep the potatoes for someone to eat later, wrapping them in foil will help keep them hot for a long time. Remember to do this the day after you take the potatoes out of the microwave to retain the most heat.

  • Advice

    • Sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes are two different types of tubers. [3] X Trusted Source Library of Congress Go to source Most sweet potatoes are about the same size and shape; they have slightly pointed ends and are usually smaller than yams. Sweet potatoes are not powdery or dry like sweet potatoes, although both taste quite similar. If you buy the wrong sweet potato, you can cook it in the same way as the sweet potato; sometimes you can’t even tell the difference.
    • Some microwave ovens have a “baked potato” mode; use that mode when you are not sure how to do it.
    • If you’re in a hurry, you can cut the potatoes up as soon as the microwave stops, add seasoning (or no) and microwave for another 30 to 60 seconds to finish cooking the potatoes.
    • Experiment and satisfy the craving. There is nothing strange about eating sweet potatoes with other dishes! If you crave a certain flavor, add some to the potatoes. It will be interesting to create your own combination.
    • The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) ranks sweet potatoes at the top of the list of the most nutritious vegetables. [4] X Research Sources

    Warning

    • If you do not plan to process sweet potatoes right after you buy them, you should store them in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight. Do not store in the refrigerator as the potatoes will dry out.
    • A little fat will increase the absorption of beta-carotene in potatoes. You only need to add 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil to the potatoes if you do not want to eat them with other dishes.
