Wonton (Pierogi) is a dish originating from Eastern Europe, which can be used as a side dish or even as a main dish. Wontons are easy to make – if wontons are already cooked and frozen (as most brands do) you can make boiled, pan-fried, grilled and so on. If you have uncooked frozen wontons, the easiest way to prepare them is to boil them, then sauté them or not, it’s up to you.

Boiled cooked frozen wonton

Boiling wonton in the microwave is the fastest way. Place frozen wontons in a large microwaveable bowl. Fill the wonton with water completely. Microwave the bowl and cook on high power for 5 minutes, then carefully remove the bowl to check if the wontons are soft and hot. Drain off the water and use wonton. [1] X Research Source

  • Do not cover the bowl while cooking in the microwave.
Use the stove to boil wontons. For a 450g bag with about 12 wontons, you should cook at least 2 liters of water in a large pot. Place frozen wontons in a bowl and boil until all float to the surface, then cook for an additional 1-2 minutes – the total cooking time is usually about 5-7 minutes. Bake frozen wontons for crunch. Preheat the oven to about 200 degrees Celsius, and place a bag of about 12 wontons in a baking dish sprayed with cooking oil. Bake the wontons for 18-20 minutes, turn over half way through, and wait until the wontons turn light brown.

  • For a deeper brown, spray more oil on the top of the wontons before baking, or brush with melted butter.
Deep-fry in oil if you want crispy wonton. Choose a deep pan or large pot and pour 5-8 cm of cooking oil (for example, vegetable, canola or peanut oil). Bring to a boil 2 liters of salted water or more. Pour water into a large pot and place on the stove over high heat. Add a large pinch of salt to the water when it is just boiling.

Sauté wonton for 3-4 minutes then flip. Carefully place each wonton in the hot oil. Place 0.75 cups (180g) of sliced onions and 0.75 cups (180g) of sliced mushrooms into the pan. You just need to pour onions and mushrooms on top of the wontons, then use grits to mix in the wontons.

  • If you don’t like mushrooms, use 1.5 cups (360g) of onions and omit the mushrooms.

    Cover the pan and keep checking the wonton every minute. Continue to open the lid of the pan, flip the wonton over and stir in the onion and mushrooms until all the mixture turns to the desired brown color. Total time to fry wonton until the outside turns a nice brown color is 14-16 minutes.

    • If the wontons turn brown in 12 minutes or less, reduce the heat to medium-low for a minimum of 14 minutes total cooking time. Press the center of the wonton to check for softness and doneness.
    • Once the wontons turn a nice brown color, you’re good to go!
