Connecting two laptops (laptops) via LAN (Local Area Network) is a great way to quickly transfer data between two computers or play multiplayer games with a stable and reliable connection. You can transfer data between two laptops over LAN using cable or wireless network.
Steps
Using a cable (Windows)
- Note that some newer laptops do not have a network port. Some laptop manufacturers have decided to remove them to make laptops lighter or thinner. In that case, move on to the next method to work with wireless connections.
- Windows 8: Press the Windows button (Start button) located to the left of the Alt key. Next, type “Contrp Panel”. Tap the icon when it appears under the text field.
- Windows 7, Vista, and XP: Press the Windows button (Start button) to the left of the Alt key. Next, type “Contrp Panel”. Tap the icon when it appears above the text field. You can also open the Start menu by pressing the icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
- Scroll to the “Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings” section. Click on the “change settings” link in that section. A new “System Properties” window will appear. In this window, click the Change button at the bottom of the window.
- Enter the same workgroup name on both computers. It doesn’t matter what the name is, as long as they are the same on both machines.
- Typing in the search box in the upper-right corner of the Contrp Panel window is probably the easiest way to find it.
- In “Network and Sharing Center”, click “Change Adapter Settings” on the left side of the window.
- Machine 1
- IP Address (IP Address): 192.168.0.1
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Default Gateway: Leave it blank
- Machine 2
- IP Address: 192.168.0.2
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Default Gateway: Leave it blank
Wireless connection (Windows)
- Windows 8: Click the Windows button (Start button) located to the left of the Alt key. Next, type “Contrp Panel”. Tap the icon when it appears under the text field.
- Windows 7, Vista, and XP: Press the Windows button (Start button) to the left of the Alt key. Next, type “Contrp Panel”. Tap the icon when it appears above the text field. You can also open the Start menu by tapping the icon located in the lower left corner of the screen.
- Note that this button is only enabled if you are not currently in the HomeGroup. If available, leave your current HomeGroup.
Using a cable (Mac)
- The cable will make a “click” sound when plugged in correctly.
- Check the box next to the “Personal File Sharing” service
- Below the list of services is an address that starts with “afp”. Rewrite this address because that will be the address the other computer needs to know to be able to connect over LAN.
- If you don’t know the other machine’s IP address, refer to the article on how to find the IP address on a Mac to find the correct one.
