With two computers (PCs) with USB ports, you can connect them together using a special USB cable – a “bridge” cable. Technically, we can also connect two Mac computers via a USB cable, but you will need an additional USB-to-Ethernet adapter and an Ethernet cable. Once a connection is established, you can quickly share files from one computer to another.

Prepare the USB-to-USB bridge cable. [1] X Research Sources Since there are so many types, it is important that you use the correct USB-to-USB cable. Only a USB-to-USB cable can connect two PCs (commonly called a “bridge cable”, sometimes called a “USB data sharing cable”, “USB network cable” or “USB cable”) . Standard cables will have an electronic bulge in the middle and a male USB connector at the ends.

Install the software on two computers. [2] X Research Source You need to do this before plugging in the cables to the computers. The bridge cable usually comes with a CD or DVD containing the software. Start by inserting the disc in your computer and launch the installer when a window appears on the screen. If the software does not launch by itself, you need to press ⊞ Win + E to open File Explorer, then go to the CD/DVD ROM drive on the left side of the screen. Double-click the “setup” or “installer” file.

  • If the cable does not come with software, you can go to the manufacturer’s website and look for “Software” or “Drivers”. Then download your cable-specific software to both computers.
  • If you have the opportunity to choose the mode, choose “link” (other names are “bridge” or “transfer”).

Launch the data sharing software on both computers. No matter how the software is installed, there will be a shortcut icon displayed in the Start menu. Click “Start”, go to “All Programs” or “All Apps” and select the software from the menu. From now on, you don’t have to switch back and forth between the two computers to share files because all operations will be done on one machine.

Prepare the necessary equipment. [3] X Research Source Technically, Macs cannot connect to each other via a USB cable, the most likely way to create a USB-to-USB connection on a Mac is to connect the cable from the USB port on the computer one to the Ethernet port on the other computer.

  • USB-to-Ethernet connectors: These connectors are universal, meaning you don’t have to buy a dedicated connector for Apple computers. One end of the adapter has a male USB connector, the other end a female RJ-45 port for an Ethernet cable.
  • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet Cable: This cable is standard with an RJ-45 connector and is available at most electronics stores.
  • You can search online for how to share files between two Mac computers for other simple methods.
