When you don’t have access to a computer network and need to transfer files or establish a connection between two computers, you can connect one computer to the other via a crossover network cable. After connecting the computers together via a crossover cable, you will be asked to modify the network settings on either computer to establish a connection. Then you’ll be able to transfer files or play local games. Check your crossover cable. While a standard network cable just establishes a connection between a computer and a router, a crossover cable can be used to connect computers running Windows operating systems together.

  • Check that the color bands at each end of the cable match. A crossover cable will have different color bands at both ends; whereas, for a standard cable, the color bands at both ends match perfectly.

Select and open the icon labeled “Unidentified network” from the computer network map at the top of the Network and Sharing Center window. Sometimes the icon shows up as “Multiple networks” if you have more than one computer network.

Enter your computer’s administrator account password if prompted and press the “Enter” key. Now that both computers appear on the Network and Sharing Center window, you will be able to proceed with sharing files and other resources.

Plug each end of the standard cable into the network ports of both computers. If either or both of your Mac computers don’t have a network port, you’ll need to use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter cable.
