If you like the durability of gel nail polish but want the variety of colors to choose from, you may be wondering if you can mix the two. Fortunately, if you are careful and patient, it is possible! To simply combine the two paints, you’ll apply plain paint first, then apply gel polish on top when the base coat has dried. To increase durability, you can make a “sandwich” by brushing a coat of regular paint between 2 coats of gel polish.

Apply nail polish as you normally would. Use regular nail polish with your favorite color. In order for the paint to stick better, you need to file and clean your nails first. You can also pre-treat with a regular base coat (non-gel) if desired. [1] X Research Source

  • Apply multiple coats of paint for a darker or opaque color. However, do not apply the paint too thick, or the gel polish will not adhere firmly.
  • Apply polish to the end of the nail but don’t go below the free edge.

Wait for the paint to dry completely. This is an important step in successfully combining regular and gel polish. Before applying gel polish, you need to wait several hours for the paint to normally dry. Make sure the paint is completely dry before continuing. [2] X Research Source

  • The minimum time for the paint to dry is 4-6 hours. It’s best to wait 24 hours.
  • Drying time may take longer if you apply multiple coats of paint.
  • If the paint is not completely dry, the gel may come off. The nail polish will shrink or crack underneath the gel polish once you finish curing the gel polish. [3] X Research Sources

Apply gel polish on top of regular paint. After the nail polish dries, you will apply a layer of gel on top. Sweep from the base to the tip of the nail. [4] X Research Source Apply some gel to the free edge of the nail to lock the base coat. [5] X Research Sources

  • If the gel polish gets on the skin or cuticle, be sure to wipe it off before curing the gel. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to scrape off afterwards!

Curing gel polish under LED or UV lamp. Place your hand under the LED or UV curing lamp to dry the gel polish. Leave the nails under the light for the recommended time. [6] X Research Source

  • See label on gel polish bottle for curing time. Usually you need to cure 30 seconds under LED lamp, or 2 minutes under UV lamp. [8] X Research Sources
  • You can buy gel polish curing lights online, at a supermarket, or at a cosmetic store.

Warning: Using LED or UV curing lamps can expose the skin to high UV radiation, leading to skin damage over time. If you regularly do gel nails, protect your hands with broad-spectrum sunscreen or wear UV-resistant manicure gloves. [7] X Research Sources

Wipe off the adhesive layer with an alcohol wipe. After curing the gel polish, there will be an adhesive layer on the nail. To remove this adhesive, use a lint-free cloth dipped in 91% isopropyl alcohol and wipe each nail. If you want, you can use a disposable alcohol wipe. [9] X Research Source

  • Avoid using cotton swabs to remove makeup as it leaves lint on the nails.
  • If possible, use a towel for each nail. Using the same towel on multiple nails will fade the gel polish.
  • If the cuticle feels dry, wait 1-2 minutes for the alcohol to dry and apply some cuticle oil on it. [10] X Research Source

Using the “sandwich” layering technique

File your nails to create the required roughness. Before applying base coat, you need to slightly roughen the nail surface. This step will help the gel polish stick better. Gently use a file block or file with a roughness of 220 or higher to file your nails. [11] X Research Source Rub the file on each nail 6-8 times in an X shape . [12] X Research Source

  • Be careful not to over-file to avoid injury.
  • If you are using a file instead of a block file, choose a file with a very smooth roughness. Rub the file back and forth a few times on your nails gently to avoid injuring the nail.
Dust your nails with an alcohol wipe. Wipe the newly filed nail with a lint-free cloth soaked in 91% isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol wipes will both clean the nails and provide moisture for the nails, helping the base gel to adhere to the nails more firmly. [13] X Research Source

  • If you like, you can use a disposable alcohol wipe, like the one in a first aid kit.
  • Don’t use cotton wool to remove makeup as it can leave lint on your nails.

Apply base coat of gel polish. Apply a thin layer of base gel on each nail, sweeping from the base to the tip. This will be the base coat for the nail. After applying the base coat on the nail, apply some polish along the free edge of the nail to cover the tip. [14] X Research Source

  • Be careful not to let the gel stick to the cuticle as it will make the base coat easier to peel off. [15] X Research Source

Curing gel polish under LED or UV lamp. Curing nails under LED or UV lamp for recommended time. Usually you need to cure 30 seconds under LED lamp, or 1 minute under UV lamp. [16] X Research Source

  • If you are concerned about UV exposure, apply sunscreen or wear manicure gloves to protect your hands.

Use an alcohol wipe to wipe off the adhesive on each nail. After curing the base coat, there will be a layer of adhesive on the nail. Wipe each nail clean with a lint-free cloth soaked in 91% isopropyl alcohol. [17] X Research Source

  • You can also use disposable alcohol wipes.
Apply 1 or 2 coats of regular nail polish. Choose your favorite paint, dip the brush in the paint and sweep over the edge of the bottle to remove excess paint. Apply a thin and even coat of nail polish to each nail. Wait 5 minutes for the paint to dry and apply a second coat if desired. [18] X Research Sources

  • If you apply the paint too thick, the gel coating will not adhere firmly.
  • Apply paint to the end of the nail but do not cover below the free edge to avoid peeling paint. [19] X Research Source

Wait for the paint to dry completely. In order for the paint not to shrink or crack underneath the gel, you must wait for the paint to dry completely. It’s best to wait hours or days before applying the gel. [20] X Research Source

  • If you are using quick drying paint, you can apply the gel coat after 15-20 minutes. [21] X Research Source
Apply gel polish on top. Once you are sure the base coat is completely dry, you can apply a gel coat. Sweep evenly, avoid breaking the cuticle, then apply nail polish to the edge of the nail. [22] X Research Source

  • Covering the edge of the nail gel will help lock the normal polish inside and prevent it from peeling.

  • Usually you need to cure 30 seconds under LED lamp, or 2 minutes under UV lamp.
  • Wipe off the adhesive layer with an alcohol wipe. After curing is complete, wipe off the adhesive with a lint-free cloth soaked in 91% isopropyl alcohol. You will have beautiful and durable nails with sandwich layering technique! [24] X Research Source

    • Apply some cuticle oil for moisture if desired. Wait at least one minute after wiping off the adhesive to avoid smearing the gel on top. [25] X Research Sources
