It’s unbelievable – someone in the house or a pet has vomited on the carpet! However, cleaning up vomit, stains and odors is not too difficult. Even if you don’t have a carpet cleaning product or baking soda available in your home, you can still get the dirty spot clean.
Steps
Clean up vomit
- One thing to keep in mind when washing towels in the washing machine: if there are solids in the vomit, they can get stuck in the machine.
- Make sure the bag is not punctured so that vomit does not get on your hands.
- Do not use a spatula with a gap. The vomit will pass through the opening and fall.
- Disinfect spoon or spatula after shoveling vomit.
- Using a towel can cause vomit to press against the carpet. [4] X Research Source Using a flat object such as a spatula, cardboard or scraper to shovel will help prevent this.
Dry the water
- If the vomit is very thick, try sprinkling baking soda on the spot and leaving it overnight. The baking soda will soak into the vomit and clump. [5] X Research Sources
- Use the tip of a vacuum cleaner instead of a regular brush.
- When absorbing water, you should press your hand a little hard to absorb a lot of water. Remember to only press hard, not rub.
- Use a white rag to prevent the pattern or dye on the towel from spilling onto the carpet.
- You can use paper towels instead of clean rags.
Clean stains
- After most of the vinegar has been absorbed, you can scrub the stain with a stiff brush until the stain starts to come off. Use a dry cloth to blot the stain again.
- You can also add to a spray bottle 5 drops of refined essential oil to mask the odor and 8 drops of thieves essential oil which is said to kill 99% of bacteria.
- You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar in this step.
- Do not rub the rag into the carpet.
- Do not spray too much. You need to cover the stain but not wet the carpet.
- Water the stain to rinse off the soap. You need to rinse the soap off the carpet, because soap can collect dirt.
- Remember to rinse again after the stain has disappeared. Spray water on the cleaned area and pat dry with a towel. Repeat 2-3 times.
- Do not use ammonia if you have pets in the house. The smell of ammonia can attract them to come and pee there. [9] X Research Source
- Don’t leave the iron in one place for too long – the towel could scorch. Instead, you should gently glide the iron back and forth over the stained area.
- Never be directly onto the carpet. You should always lay a towel over the carpet to iron. Otherwise, your carpet is at risk of burning.
Deodorant
- Leave the baking soda on the carpet overnight and vacuum it up the next morning. This step will also help absorb any remaining moisture.
Advice
- If the vomit is dry, you can vacuum up large chunks, then moisten the area with water. Continue to treat as fresh vomit.
- You may need a combination of the above methods. Try cleaning with vinegar or soap, then sprinkle with baking soda mixed with water.
- After using a vacuum cleaner to clean up the vomit, you need to change the trash bag or clean the machine to prevent bacteria and odors.
- Before using the above products to clean the carpet, you should test it on a small area of the carpet for 5-10 minutes first to make sure the carpet is not discolored.
