This wikiHow teaches you how to fix a clogged printer head. Printhead clogging is often caused by ink drying out due to lack of use, which can lead to uneven or erroneous print results. Usually, a clogged printhead can be fixed with the printer’s built-in self-cleaning software, but if this doesn’t work, you’ll need to perform a manual printhead cleaning.

  • If the Contrp Panel window uses Categories view instead of Icons, you need to click the View devices and printers link under the “Hardware and Sound” heading. (Hardware and Sound).

Open the printer’s menu. Right-click the printer name that needs to be cleaned. The printer will be below the “Printers” heading near the bottom of the page. A menu will drop down.

  • If the mouse doesn’t have a right mouse button, click the right mouse button or click down with two fingers.
  • If your computer uses a trackpad instead of a mouse, you can press down on the trackpad with two fingers, or tap the bottom right of the trackpad.

Click the “Cleaning” option. This option is usually called Clean Heads or Clean Cartridges , but look for any option that says “Clean” on the page.

Follow the instructions on the screen. If prompted to do or click on anything during the cleaning procedure, proceed accordingly. Otherwise, the printer will clean itself and you can then use it to print the document as usual.

  • You may see an option to print a test page to check if the cleaning process is working properly.
  • If the test print results still show that the print head is still clogged, you need to manually clean the print head to fix the problem.

Turn off and unplug the printer. This will prevent damage to the printer as well as endangering you when removing the toner cartridge and printhead unit.

Remove the ink cartridge. Open the printer’s main cover, and then remove each ink cartridge from the printer.

  • You should refer to your printer’s manual or online manual to properly remove the toner cartridge.

Remove the print head unit. This is the cartridge holder. The bottom of the print head unit has some holes.

Mix Isopropyl alcohol and water in a 50/50 ratio. Prepare half a cup of water and half a cup of alcohol (about 120 ml). Mix the two solutions together so that the mixture reduces the corrosiveness of the alcohol and does not damage the print head.

Pour the mixture into the bowl so that the mixture is slightly shallow (about 0.5 cm from the bottom of the bowl). We can add more later if it’s too little.

Place the print head unit in a diluted mixture of alcohol and water. Note: the mixture should cover the print head (or cartridge) by about 1 cm.

Soak the printhead for at least 2 minutes. So the ink that is dry at the printhead will have time to soften.

Place the printhead on the paper towel. Moisture and excess ink on the printhead surface will be absorbed.
