Stubborn glue or paint stains can dry and harden on the window glass, causing ugly smudges. When you peel off the decals on the car windshield, they can leave behind greasy stains. Super glues are water resistant and difficult to clean with familiar methods – but you can do it with a combination of solvents and scrapers. Read on for specific steps to take when cleaning the glue.
Steps
Clean dry glue
- Clean stains with ordinary glass cleaner. Use a clean rag to rub the glass cleaner on the glass surface to remove stains and mask the smell of alcohol or nail polish remover.
- The degreasing agent in citrus cleaning products is usually d-Limonene. Other products contain heptanes, a strong solvent. To be on the safe side, use it sparingly and in a well-ventilated place.
- You can also soak the glue stain in lighter gasoline. Spray or dab gasoline directly on the glue stain where the glue is most concentrated. Wait for about 1 minute, then wipe with a clean, damp cloth.
- This method can also clean wax stains on walls. Wax stains may still be translucent, but gasoline can remove most of the wax. Once the stain has been removed, you can repaint the wall.
Clean wet glue
- Hot glue can be peeled off after drying. You can wait for the glue to dry and peel it off.
- Elmer liquid glue can also be peeled off easily when dry.
- Elmer Dry Adhesive will come off when scrubbed with hot water but may be more difficult to clean than some others.
- All-purpose glue usually peels off when dry, but you can also try scrubbing with hot water to cure it before it sets.
- Super glue will not come off without chipping. Chances are you’ll scratch the glass when you try to remove the super-adhesives.
- Note that wet glue can stick to towels and be difficult to clean. You should use old towels that you are not afraid to damage.
- Scrubbing wet glue can cause the glue to spread around and make the glass more opaque. If water and a towel are not enough to remove the glue, try a stronger solvent.
Scrape off the glue on the glass
- The scraping method is not only effective in removing glue, but also very effective in removing thick and stubborn dry paint.
Advice
- Before shaving, you should try scraping the hard-to-see part of the glass first to make sure it doesn’t get scratched.
- Try a mixture of baking soda and water. Spread the mixture on the glue stain and let it sit for a while, then scrape it off with a plastic scraper. This is a cheap, quick, easy and non-toxic way.
Warning
- Use a shaver with a handle instead of a bare blade. The razor blade can flip unexpectedly and cut your hand when it hits a glue stick.
Things you need
- Isopropyl cleaning cone, nail polish remover, white vinegar, store-bought grease remover
- Razor or razor
- Towels/ rags for scrubbing and cleaning
