If your Epson printer produces smudged, broken, or fuzzy prints, you may need to clean the nozzle (or nozzle). Fortunately, Epson printers come with a handy utility that you can use to clean the nozzles. Start by printing a test sample from the utility menu so you can be sure that the problem is in the nozzle. If the nozzle needs to be cleaned, run another cleaning cycle and print a test pattern to ensure that the printer is working properly. If the cleaning cycle is not enough to fix the problem, you may need to flush the nozzle to remove clogged ink or dirt build-up.

Check that the printer is on and the low-ink light is off. The printer must be connected to a power source, and the lights and screen are on. Observe the error message on the screen and check if the ink indicator light displayed when the printer is about to run out of ink is off. [1] X Research Source

  • If the ink indicator is blinking or showing, you need to replace the cartridge before cleaning the nozzle.
  • You must deal with any error messages displayed on the screen before you can proceed to clean the printer’s nozzles.

Look for gaps, blurs, breaks, or blurred lines in the pattern. We will look at the test sample to determine if the printer nozzle needs to be cleaned. [4] X Research Sources

  • On Mac, you need to click the “Confirmation” button to print the test form.
  • Print a test sample before running the cleaning cycle to ensure that the problem is indeed in the printer nozzles.

Unplug the power cable while the machine is printing. Print any page so that the print head starts moving. While the paper is printing, unplug the printer so that the print head is not bound. Then, pull the paper out of the printer so you can proceed to clean the nozzle. [9] X Research Source

  • Unplug the cable from the printer to make it easier to work with.

Open the printer cover and pull the print head to the center. Open the printer cover to find the print head containing the ink cartridge inside. You may need to pull the print head to the center of the printer to easily clean the nozzle. [10] X Research Source

  • Because you have disconnected the printer power while the printer is operating, the print head will be able to move freely on the slide.
  • If the print head cannot be moved, do not force it. Plug the printer back in, proceed to print another page, and disconnect the power again to free up the print head.

Remove the ink cartridge and place the blotting paper below the print head. Grab the toner cartridge from the top of the print head and pull it out of the printer. Set the cartridges aside so you can reinstall them later. Proceed to cut 2 strips of blotting paper 2.5 cm wide and stack them under the print head to absorb moisture during cleaning. [11] X Research Source

  • You can use scissors to cut the blotting paper.
  • Absorbent paper is available at department, craft, and stationery stores, and online.
  • As soon as the printer indicates that it is about to run out of ink, you should replace the ink cartridge as soon as possible to avoid a blockage.

Attach the 2.5 cm silicone tube to the 10 cc syringe. Prepare a 10 cc syringe (no needle). Cut a small 1.3 cm long silicone tube designed for model airplanes and insert it into the syringe tip. Check that the silicone tube is firmly attached and does not fall off the syringe tip. [12] X Research Source

  • The 2.5 cm silicone tube is available at hobby stores, drone stores, and online.
  • You can buy clean syringes from drugstores, department stores, and online.

Fill the syringe with rubbing alcohol and attach the silicone tube to the print head. Dip the tip of the silicone tube into the rubbing alcohol solution and then slowly pull the plunger to fully drain the alcohol into the syringe housing. Then, attach the silicone tube tip to the nozzle that goes into the cartridge on the printhead. [13] X Research Source

  • There are multiple nozzles per cartridge, so you need to clean them one by one.
  • The silicone tube will fit snugly against the nozzle on the printhead.
  • Do not use rubbing alcohol or other water-based cleaning solutions as this will damage the print head.

Push the syringe plunger to clean the printer nozzle. With the silicone tube attached to the printhead, push the plunger on the syringe gently and slowly to let the alcohol pass through the printer nozzle. If you feel resistance, you need to wait a while for the alcohol to dissolve some of the clogged ink, then continue to push the plunger to pump all the alcohol in the syringe through the nozzle. [14] X Research Source

  • Do not try to push the plunger too hard to force the alcohol through the blockage as this may damage the nozzle.

Remove the silicone tube, fill the syringe, and attach the tip to another nozzle for rinsing. After the alcohol is used up, gently remove the silicone tube from the print head. Fill the syringe with alcohol again and attach the silicone tube to the other nozzle of the cartridge located on the print head. You need to discharge the alcohol through the nozzle gently and slowly. Continue flushing the remaining nozzles on the printhead until all are clean. [15] X Research Source

  • You don’t have to flush the nozzles repeatedly to remove any build-up.

Reinsert the ink cartridge and turn on the printer to test. Insert each ink cartridge into the corresponding compartment on the print head. Be sure to check that each cartridge is firmly seated before closing the printer cover. Plug in the power and turn the machine back on. Print a test page or an image to see if the print quality improves after performing the cleaning process. [17] X Research Source

    • If the printout still has gaps or smudges, the nozzle is probably damaged and you need to replace the entire print head.
  • Advice

    • Print a test sample before running a cleaning cycle so you can pinpoint the cause of the problem.
    • Don’t forget to replace the toner cartridge as soon as the ink is low warning to prevent clogging.
    • Turn the printer off when not in use so it can run a short cleaning cycle and keep toner from clogging.

    Warning

    • Do not unplug or turn off the printer while the cleaning cycle is running.
    • Take care to avoid spilling or splashing cleaning alcohol on the machine when you clean the nozzle.
