Consider calling your carrier. The surest way to determine if an iPhone is unlocked is to call your carrier, provide any information the customer service representative asks for, and have them verify the iPhone’s condition. If you’re in the US, you can contact popular carriers at the following phone numbers:

  • Verizon – 1 (800) 922-0204
  • AT&T – 1 (800) 331-0500
  • Sprint – 1 (888) 211-4727
  • T-Mobile – 1 (877) 453-1304
  • Normally, you’ll need to provide your account password (if you have one) and your iPhone’s IMEI number (located in Settings > General > About > IMEI ).

Consider the case where you bought an iPhone. If you bought your iPhone from an Apple dealer or carrier, it’s unlocked. However, if you bought your phone on a carrier’s plan, your iPhone might be locked.

  • iPhones purchased from a third-party seller, such as Amazon or Craigslist, will usually come with some form of documentation titled or invoiced as “Unlocked” if the iPhone is unlocked.
  • If you bought a used iPhone from a friend or online classifieds, ask the seller if the iPhone is unlocked (preferably before the transaction).

Review your current iPhone’s service plan. If you’re on a prepaid plan, your iPhone is likely unlocked; however, if you’re on a 2-year or similar contract, your iPhone may be locked until you complete the payment process.

  • The main exception to this is active duty officers in the US, who can request a network unlock prior to departure regardless of the iPhone’s billing status.

Find the Cellular Data Network option. If you have this option, your iPhone is unlocked; otherwise the iPhone is still locked to the network. [2] X Research Source

  • On some phones, like AT&T, you’ll need to tap Cellular Data Options first to see “Cellular Data Network”.
  • In extremely rare cases, your carrier will provide you with a SIM card that allows you to change your iPhone’s access point name or Access Point Name (APN), but the phone remains unlocked. If your phone has such a SIM card, proceed to the next method.

Buy another carrier’s SIM card. If you’re in the US and use Verizon or Sprint, buy an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card (and vice versa). Note: do not buy a prepaid SIM card, and the new SIM card must be the same size as the current SIM.

Dial the number and press the call button. If this operation displays an error message, the operator voice says “Call cannot be completed as dialed” or a similar situation occurs, the iPhone is locked; but if you can make calls it means the phone is unlocked and can use another carrier’s SIM card.
  • Advice

    • There are many online services that allow you to check your iPhone’s IMEI number in the list of unlocked iPhones (for a fee). Unfortunately, the results of these services are not guaranteed to be successful, so you need to be careful when using them. In general, calling your mobile carrier is the best way to find out if your phone is unlocked.

    Warning

    • Busy should be careful when handling the SIM card.
    • The only websites that can provide accurate information about iPhone unlock status through IMEI number will charge a service fee. These sites need access to Apple’s GSX database, which is not accessible to everyone, and is expensive to do so.
    • If you come across a free website that provides IMEI unlocking information for iPhones, chances are that the content on the page is outdated and therefore no longer accurate. [4] X Research Sources
