The U.S. Treasury Department uses a variety of security features to combat counterfeiting. There are nearly nine million dollars in counterfeit money circulating in the US. [1] After every decade, the $100 bill is redesigned, so the features you need to check will depend on the issue date of that note. Dollar bills of the 2009 series and newer contain more safety features. The $100 bill features a portrait of Benjamin Franklin in the front and Independence Hall in the back.

Observe the serial number. The serial number must correspond to the serial number of the year of issue. The serial number appears in the upper left and lower right corners of the bill. If the serial number does not correspond to the year of issue, it is a counterfeit.

Check the ink for color change. There is a large copper ink tank to the left of the bill’s serial number. Inside the ink tank there is a bell, which changes from copper to green when you look at the bill from different angles. [4]

Hold the bill up to the light. There is a thread attached to the note, running along the left side of Franklin’s portrait. The word “USA” and the number 100 are alternately printed on the thread, visible from both sides of the bill.

  • If you hold the bill up to ultraviolet light, the thread emits a pink glow. [5]

Check the blue safety ribbon. Just to the right of Franklin’s portrait is a blue safety ribbon. This ribbon is 3D printed. You move the bill back and forth and check to see if the number 100 and the tiny bells move back and forth. [7]

  • The ribbon is woven into the paper instead of glued on. So if you can peel off this ribbon, it’s fake.

Find blurred portrait photos. Hold the bill up to the light and look for a blurred photograph of Benjamin Franklin in the white oval to the right. You can see a blurred portrait from both sides of the bill. [8]

Use a magnifying glass to find microprints. Check around the collar of Franklin’s coat and you’ll see “The United States of America” printed in very small print. [9]

Check date. The latest $100 bill belongs to the “2009 Series” and has many different safety features. Older notes are being removed from circulation to prevent counterfeiting. [11] However, old bills still have legal value, so if you receive one, don’t assume it’s fake. Check the issue date on the note.

  • The regular $100 bill has been in circulation for 7 years now. As a result, most of the older notes have now been removed from circulation. But perhaps you have a few sheets left at home and can check the features on them.

Touch the money. US Dollars feel different to the touch. They are printed on cotton and linen fabrics, not paper. The ink on the money is also slightly raised, which is a feature of printing technology.   • However, the palpation method does not guarantee absolute accuracy. Professional counterfeiters will erase real money and overprint it.

Find a safe thread. A $100 bill printed after 1990 must have a safety thread on the left side and should only be visible when you hold it up in front of a light source. The letters “USA” and “100” are printed alternately on that thread. If you hold the bill in front of ultraviolet light, the thread will emit a pink light. [13]

Check out the microprinting technique. Old banknotes use microprinting as a safety feature. Use the magnifying glass to examine the small characters that appear in different places depending on the year the note was issued.

  • For example, from $100 issued between 1990-1996, “The United States of America” will appear on the outer edge of the portrait oval. [14]
  • Notes issued between 1996-2013 have the word “USA100” appearing within the number 100 in the lower left corner. You’ll also see the words “The United States of America” on Franklin’s left lapel. [15]

Look for ink that changes color. The $100 bill issued between 1996-2013 uses color-changing ink. Hold the bill tilted to the light and look at the bottom right corner. The number 100 must change from green to black. [16]

Notice the blurred lines. Real money will have clear and sharp lines, elements that are difficult to counterfeit. If you see blurry text or print, it’s probably a fake. [18]

Use a counterfeit money detector pen. This pen is on sale on Amazon for $5. It looks for common chemicals used on counterfeit money. However, crooks are getting smarter and no longer use those chemicals, so this type of pen can make mistakes. [19]

Compare with another banknote. $100 bills printed before 1990 have no special security features. So the best way to check is to compare with another $100 bill. [20] You may have to check with your bank to see if the bill is real.

Report counterfeit money

Keep the counterfeit bill. If you believe it is counterfeit, do not return it to the person giving the money. [21] Instead, you must try to keep them. Call the manager and tell the giver your manager wants to see the bill.

Record details. In the meantime, you need to jot down important information about the giver. Record your age, height, hair color, eye color, weight, and other personal characteristics. [22]
