Research shows that how people react to other individuals and situations is influenced primarily by their perception, not by the individual or situation. [1] X Source of Research If you have a negative attitude, you are more likely to have a negative impact on everything around you. By taking positive steps to cultivate optimism, you can combat and change negative attitudes.
Steps
Forget Negativity
- Negative thinking breeds negative actions. If you decide to have a positive attitude, you will foster positive changes. [3] X Research Sources
- For example, if you missed out on a promotion at work, it’s not because your boss doesn’t like you or your productivity is low. Instead of blaming, talk to your boss about how to improve at work and make positive changes.
- Write down a list of anything in your life that you consider negative. Read the list and mark the things you can change. For example, you can change negative relationships with other people by removing them from your life, or you can change a bad financial situation by implementing ways to save money. [5] X Research Sources
- Once you have thought about how to change the negative influences in your life, burn the paper to symbolize letting go and write a new list with the positive things in your life.
- Accept that nothing is perfect. Imperfection defines character, and letting go of all expectations of perfection helps you focus on the positive in everyone and in every situation. [6] X Research Sources
- Whenever something bad happens, forget about it as much as possible and then quickly imagine the things that you want to happen. Likewise, if a person says something negative, consider it for a moment and then let it go. Paying attention to the negative will only make you feel negative.
