To many people, flies are tiny and annoying creatures; they buzz, land on food, are generally very annoying. Sometimes they are the subject of interest for some people, even the food that others seek. Whether you want to catch flies for food or just want to get rid of them, there are many effective methods you can try.
Steps
Make a fly trap
- Open the bottle cap, then poke the plastic bottle with scissors and cut off the top ¼ of the water bottle.
- Pour into the bottom of the bottle ¼ cup sugar (60 ml), ¼ cup water, and a few drops of blue food coloring. Blue helps attract flies, but almost any color or colorless will work, except yellow. Yellow is the only color known to repel flies. [1] X Research Sources . In addition, a little water mixed with dish soap and a few drops of apple cider vinegar also attracts flies.
- Turn the top of the bottle upside down and place it on the bottom of the bottle to form a funnel. The flies may be able to get into the bottle, but they’ll find it much harder to find their way out.
- Place the trap in a sunny spot where flies frequent and wait for them to gather inside the bottle.
- Pour sugar water or a solution consisting of sugar mixed with a little apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid into a glass jar close to the mouth of the jar.
- Use cling film to cover the mouth of the jar. Tie more with an elastic band if you are not sure.
- Use a pen or scissors to poke a small hole in the center of the wrapper. The flies will enter the jar through this hole, and once in, they will drown from the liquid contained in the jar. [2] X Research Source
- Place the trap in a sunny location, outdoors, or anywhere you see a lot of flies.
- Fly paper is coated with a sweet, sticky (sometimes poisonous) substance that attracts flies and sticks to the trap. These fly traps don’t look great indoors, but are a very effective way to catch flies.

Experts advise: Attach fly paper to the ceiling of the kitchen or bathroom – anywhere there is a food source that attracts flies. If you have a lot of flies in your home, you need to find a food source for flies and deal with the problem.
- Cut the wrapping paper into strips about 2.5 cm wide.
- Use a pen to poke a hole in the top of each strip of paper, thread the string through the hole, and tie it in a loop.
- In a large saucepan or bowl, mix ½ cup corn syrup (120 ml), 2 tablespoons white sugar (30 ml), and 2 tablespoons brown sugar (30 ml).
- Dip the strips of paper into the mixture (put the string on the top of the bowl) and soak for several hours or overnight.
- Remove the paper strips from the mixture and hang above the sink until no more drips. You can then hang them indoors or outdoors, or anywhere there are flies. [3] X Research Sources
Use your hand to catch flies
- Practice flexing the hand quickly, the fingertips pressed against the end of the palm.
- Remember to leave some space on the inside of your palm, as this will be where the fly is trapped.
- Careful. If you squeeze your fist too tightly or squeeze it into a fist, the fly will be crushed. But if you don’t care if the fly lives or dies, it doesn’t matter.
- Slowly move towards the fly. Sudden movements can cause the fly to fly away, and you have to wait for it to land.
- Wait until the fly lands on a firm surface so you can guess its movement more easily.
- Make sure the flat surface doesn’t have a lot of objects around. You probably don’t want to topple everything just by catching a fly.
- When the fly senses movement, it will startle and fly straight into your cupped hand. [4] X Research Sources
- As soon as the fly flies into your palm, make a quick fist to trap the fly inside. Now it’s up to you to release the fly outside, put it in a jar to observe, or feed it to your pets.
Use a cup to catch flies
- The cup will catch the fly, the piece of cover helps to seal the cup so that the fly can’t get out.
- Move slowly towards the fly. The sudden movement will cause the fly to fly away and you have to wait for it to land again.
- Make sure the mouth of the cup stays close to the table as you thread the piece of paper underneath. An opening that is too wide will allow the fly to escape.
Advice
- Try catching flies in tight, confined spaces like bathrooms.
- Close all windows and doors. An open door can help keep flies away, but it can also attract more flies.
- Move quickly but gently.
- Flies can live up to 30 days with access to water and food. They can live 15 days without food and water. If catching flies is difficult, you can choose to wait for them to die.
Warning
- Flies can carry pathogens and bacteria. Remember to wash your hands after handling them.
