Start selecting the year you want to count.

Calculate whether the year is divisible by 4 (the result of division without remainder). If it is not divisible by 4, for example 1997, then the year is not a leap year. If it’s divisible by 4, like 2012, read on and continue.

Divide the year by 100. A year that is divisible by 4 but not by 100, for example 2012, is not a leap year. If the year you calculate is divisible by both 4 and 100, like 2000, you continue.

Divide the year by 400. A year that is divisible by 100 but not by 400, like 1900, is not a leap year. If it is divisible by both 100 and 400, the year is leap year. By such a calculation, the year 2000 is definitely a leap year.

    • Leap years: 1600, 1604, 1608, 1612, 1616…1684, 1688, 1692, 1696, 1704 (1700 doesn’t leap, you know why?), 1708, 1712…1792, 1796, 1804 (non-leap year 1800), 1808, 1812…1892, 1896, 1904 (non-leap year 1900), 1908, 1912…1992, 1996, 2000 (2000 is a leap year again, you find out why right?), 2004, 2008, 2012…2092, 2096, 2104 (2100 non-leap year)…2196, 2204…2296, 2304…2396, 2400 (same reason), 2404…etc.
    • All years divisible by 4 are leap years. A year has 365 days and 6 hours, or 365 and 1/4 days. Every four years these 6 hours add up to a day (6×4=24) and this is also the reason why every four years, February adds a 29th day.
