Steps

Traditional style

Use a round or wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. The braiding will be done quickly when the hair is not tangled. Once you’re done untangling, you’ll easily comb your hair from top to bottom.

  • If you’re doing it on thick or layered hair, use a little water or liquid gel to pre-wet your hair. This step makes it easier for you to braid your hair.
  • You can braid your hair when it’s wet or dry. If the hair is completely wet, the braid will be smooth and tight, and if the hair is dry, the braid will look a bit messy.
  • If you braid your hair when it’s dry, it’s best to do it a few days after washing your hair to keep it greasy and not too smooth. Having a little oil in your hair will hold the braid better than “clean” hair.
Start with a hair tie (optional). If you tie all of your hair up or only half of it, it will be easier to braid and make the braid more manageable. When you are familiar with how to braid your hair, braid your hair at the nape of your neck without tying.
Divide your hair into 3 equal sections. This will be the 3 parts of the braid so try to divide the hair evenly.

  • Use your right hand to grab the right section of hair and the left hand to take the left side of the hair and leave the middle part alone (for now).
  • Hold the hair in the right and left hands with the middle, ring and little fingers, and leave the thumb and middle fingers alone.
Bring the left side of the hair to the middle. If you mark the hair sections in alphabetical order, the order will be BAC .

  • Use the index finger and thumb of your left hand to grab the middle section of hair.
  • Use the index finger and thumb of the right hand to take the hair in the left hand.
  • The hair in the left hand is now the middle part.

Bring the right section of hair to the middle section. Your hair sections in order of BAC have now become BCA .

  • In the left hand, move the hair held by the index finger and thumb into the palm of your hand to be held firmly with the rest of the fingers in the hand.
  • Use the index finger and thumb of the left hand to grab the hair that is in the right hand (but not the hair held by the index finger and thumb).
  • The hair in the right hand is now the middle part.
Continue braiding. Still use the middle finger and “nothing” thumb of each hand to grab the hair (located in the hand, held by the other 3 fingers) of the other hand.

  • Tighten the braid as you do. Every time you switch your hair to another hand, gently squeeze the hair so that the braid moves upwards and becomes tight. However, do not squeeze too hard.
  • Repeat the operation until the hair underneath is only about 2.5cm to 7.5cm unbraided.
Fix the braid. Use a cloth hair tie to secure the ends of your hair. You will have to tie a few loops around your hair.

  • Avoid using regular elastic bands. Because it will damage the hair and be difficult to remove at the end of the day.
  • If possible, use a hair tie that is the same color as your hair or a translucent string when tying it so that it is not visible when braiding. This will make the braid look natural and people will focus on the braid instead of the hair tie.

Use styling spray to secure the braid (optional). Using a styling spray or hairspray will help keep your hair from falling out of the braids throughout the day.

  • If you do decide to use a styling spray, use it before adding any makeup to your hair.
  • Use a hair serum to add shine to your hair. Rub the serum into both hands and smooth it along the length of the braid.

Hair embellishment (optional). Use a multicolored ribbon to tie a bow at the bottom of the braid for extra flair.

  • You can use tulle, striped silk ribbon or ric rac cord, all of which can be found at the needle store in a variety of colors to choose from.
  • Use cute clips to clip near the top of the braid or to hold the bangs.

Traditional braids to create other hairstyles. Traditional braids are easy to combine with other hairstyles. You can wear a loose braid, or tie the braid around your head. You can also tie your hair into a ponytail by braiding it into a traditional style.

  • Whether you braid all or part of your hair, experiment to see which style you prefer.

French

Unruly hair. French braids can be difficult to do if your hair is tangled, so take the time to untangle your hair with a round or wide-tooth comb.
Image titled Braid Hair Step 11

Image titled Braid Hair Step 11

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/d/db/Braid-Hair-Step-11-Version-6.jpg/v4-728px-Braid-Hair-Step-11- Version-6.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/db/Braid-Hair-Step-11-Version-6.jpg/v4-728px-Braid- Hair-Step-11-Version-6.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:258,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:409,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Take the top part of the braid. With the traditional French braid, this will be the front part of the hair, near the forehead and top of the head.

  • You don’t have to do a French braid right on top of your head. This is the easiest way to learn, but you can practically do the French braid from anywhere. If you want a low braid, just remember to grab all the hair above the ears to make the top part of the braid.
  • You can create multiple French braids by dividing your hair into sections. If you have short hair, braiding two medium braids is easier than braiding one large braid.
Divide the top section of hair into 3 equal sections. These three sections of hair will be the beginning of the braid.

  • The difficulty of French braiding is keeping the three sections even while braiding. To create a beautiful braid, start by dividing your hair evenly.
  • Make sure the hair sections are all taken from the same row, and not out of line. Keeping the three sections of hair close together will also be very effective.
Hold 3 sections of hair in hand. Keeping your hair properly will help you braid your hair quickly and neatly. While you can find a way to make yourself more comfortable, here are the basic steps for beginners:

  • Hold the left section of hair with your left hand.
  • Hold the hair in the middle with the index finger and thumb of your right hand.
  • Hold the right section of hair with the other three fingers of your right hand.
Bring the right section of hair to the center. Here’s how to move the hair in the middle without dropping it:

  • With the last 3 fingers of the left hand, hold the left hair in the hand. The index finger and thumb of the left hand are left alone.
  • Bring the index finger and thumb of the left hand to the middle section of hair and grab the right section of hair. You will now have 2 sections of hair in your left hand and 1 section of hair in your right hand.
Bring the left side of the hair to the center. The process is the same as the step above, just using the hair on the other side.

  • With the last 3 fingers of your right hand, hold the right hair in your hand. The index finger and thumb of the right hand should be left alone.
  • Bring the index finger and thumb of the right hand to the middle section of hair and grab the left side of the hair. You will now have 2 sections of hair in your right hand and 1 section of hair in your left hand.
Add more hair to the right section of hair. Up to this point, you’ve got your regular braids. Next it’s time to start the “French” process. It will take a few tries to get it right, but it will get easier once you get used to how to get your hair done.

  • Drop the middle section of hair down, leaving it in between the left and right sections. You’ll notice it in the middle of the rest of your hair – it’s raised in the middle of the unplaited hair.
  • Use the remaining three fingers of the left hand to hold the left hair in the hand and grab the right hair with the index finger and thumb of the left hand. The right hand is no longer holding the hair.
  • Using your right hand, pull a small section of unplaited hair on the right side of your head. Hold that section of hair with the index finger and thumb of your left hand to add to the hair on the right.
  • Hold the middle section of hair. Take the middle section of hair with your right hand and move it to the right and it becomes the new right section of hair. The part where you just added the hair, held by the index finger and thumb of your left hand, forms the middle hair.
Add hair to the left section of hair. The process will be similar to the one above, just use the other side of the hair:

  • Drop the middle section of hair down. Again, place it in between the left and right hair.
  • Use the remaining 3 fingers of your right hand to hold the right hair in your hand.
  • Grab the hair on the left side with the index finger and thumb of the right hand. The left hand is no longer holding the hair.
  • Using your left hand, pull a small section of unplaited hair on the left side of your head. Hold that new section of hair with the index finger and thumb of your right hand to add it to the left section of hair.
  • Hold the middle section of hair. Hold the hair with your left hand and move it to the left to create a new left side section. The part where you just added the hair, held with the index finger and thumb of your right hand, has become the new middle section of hair.

Continue braiding your hair in this fashion. You will run out of hair to add to the braid when braiding to the nape of the neck and at this point you will finish with your regular braid. To keep the braid looking neat, try to get sections of the braid similar to the size of the braided braid above.
Basic braid for the rest of the hair. Continue with the usual 3 braid for the unbraided section.
Hair fixation. Use a hair tie that is the same color as your hair or a translucent one so that it hides in the hair. Avoid using a regular elastic band as it will damage your hair and make it difficult to remove.

Hold braids with styling spray (optional). Styling spray or hairspray helps keep French braids from falling out all day long.

  • If you’re going to add some color to your hair, use a styling spray first. To prevent the hairspray from sticking to the clip or ribbon.
  • Use a hair serum to make your hair look shiny and soft if your hair is normally dry.

  • You can use tulle, striped silk tape, or ric rac cord, all of which can be found at the needle store in a variety of colors to choose from.
  • Adding an eye-catching clip or multiple clips along the braid is a great way to make the braid look prettier.

Fishtail style

Image titled Braid Hair Step 23

Image titled Braid Hair Step 23

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/e/ed/Braid-Hair-Step-23-Version-6.jpg/v4-728px-Braid-Hair-Step-23- Version-6.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/ed/Braid-Hair-Step-23-Version-6.jpg/v4-728px-Braid- Hair-Step-23-Version-6.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:259,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:410,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Divide your hair into 2 equal sections. The fishtail looks like it’s made of many small sections of hair, but surprisingly, there are only 2 basic sections.

  • For even braids, use a regular comb to create a straight line in the center of your head from forehead to nape.
  • For a slightly messy look, similar to Katniss Everdeen’s, simply divide your hair by hand into two relatively even sections.
  • You can braid fishtails when your hair is wet or dry.
Pull a small section of hair from the left side to the right side. When you’re done, you can do the same for the entire braid.

  • The right hand holds the right side of the hair.
  • Let go of the hair on the left side and let it down. Since you only braid with 2 sections of hair, there is no need to worry about getting the wrong part to braid.
  • Using your left hand, grab a small leftmost section of hair. It is the hair on the left side closest to the ear.
  • Using your right hand, grab the small left side of the hair, and place it in the right part of the braid.
  • Hold the left section of hair in your left hand. As you hold your hair, you can insert your fingers to straighten tangles and tighten braids.
Drag the small right section of hair to the left section of hair. This is similar to the step above, just using the other side of the hair.

  • To make the braid look more elaborate, you should take a small section of hair. If you want to braid quickly, you should take a larger section of hair.
  • Hold the left section of hair in your left hand.
  • Let go of the hair on the right side and let it down. Again, since you’re only braiding two sections of hair, there’s no need to worry about getting the wrong section to braid.
  • Using your right hand, grab a small section of hair on the far right side (i.e. the part closest to the ear).
  • Grab the small section of hair from the right with your left hand, and bring it to the left part of the braid.
  • Hold the right section of hair in your right hand. As you hold your hair, you can insert your fingers to straighten tangles and tighten braids.
Repeat the process until you run out of hair. Alternately switch sides and add hair to the end of the section. Try to get small equal-sized sections of hair to fit into the main section.
Secure the braid with a ribbon or fabric hair band.

Braid style 5

Divide your hair into 5 equal sections. The 5 braid looks more complicated, graceful than the regular 3 braid, and is very easy to do once you get used to the process.

  • When you’re first learning, tie all your hair up and practice braiding from there so you can do it on a solid base.
  • The 5 braid style is easier to braid when your hair is wet or oily after a few days of not washing. This will help keep sections of hair in place and avoid tangles from falling into other sections of hair.

Hold sections of hair with two hands. It is easiest to hold the left two sections of hair in the left hand and the two right sections in the right hand, letting the middle section down.

  • Numbering sections of hair can help you keep them straight. The order will be as follows 1 2 3 4 5 .

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/1/14/Braid-Hair-Step-30-Version-5.jpg/v4-728px-Braid-Hair-Step-30- Version-5.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/1/14/Braid-Hair-Step-30-Version-5.jpg/v4-728px-Braid- Hair-Step-30-Version-5.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:258,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:409,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Bring the leftmost section of hair to the center. Move it above the 2nd section and below the 3rd section so that it is in the middle.

  • You should now have the order 2 3 1 4 5 .
  • You are actually knitting the hair, bringing the right side to the left, and the left side to the right.
Knit the rightmost section of hair into the center. Move it above hair number 4 and below hair number 1 so that section 5 is in the middle.

  • You should now have the order 2 3 5 1 4 .
Continue knitting until you run out of hair. Alternately change the outer part of the hair and put it in the middle.
Hair braids. Use a ribbon or fabric hair band to secure the ends of the braid.

Dutch braid hairstyle. This style is the opposite of the French style, instead of braiding overlapping sections of hair, this style is threaded down. It’s very easy to do and instead of braiding the braid in the hair (like the French style) it shows up as a 3-D at the top of the hair.

Braid large braids from small braids. Is how? This is a regular triple braid, but each braid will be braided together to create a large, intricate braid. This look would be great with a bohemian headband or clip or make it look like you’ve done it with a lot of effort but it’s not.

Rope braid hairstyle. This beautiful hairstyle looks like a twisted rope. Although it’s a little tricky to make, it looks great after braiding or wrapping it up in a bun.
  • Advice

    • Note the thickness of the excess hair when you tie the braid. You will not use a large hair band to tie a small section of hair.
    • If you’re having trouble keeping the sections separate, tie a small elastic underneath each section and when you’re almost done, remove the elastic and continue braiding to complete the braid.
    • You need to add water or use a detangling spray to make your hair more manageable.
    • If you find it difficult to braid your own hair, practice braiding in your friends’ hair to get used to the operation.
    • For a slightly messy look, don’t braid your hair too tightly.
    • If you’re having trouble French braiding, tie half of your hair with an elastic. This is the middle part that is held in place and the elastic band will be hidden into the braid.
    • Do not try to remove the braid from above. It will make your hair dry, frizzy and knotted. Instead, remove the braid from the unbraided section of hair underneath.
    • Don’t try braiding in your own hair first, practice braiding your friends or dolls if you want a nice braid.
    • Don’t try to braid your hair too tight!
    • Remember the order: outermost – horizontal – down.
    • If you’ve never braided your hair before, learn to braid with thick wool, ribbon, or long doll hair before braiding someone else’s hair. It takes practice first to get used to the hands.
    • When braiding a 5, forget about the numbers and take the outermost part – up – down (alternating sides).

    Things you need
