Grasp the rules of the game. You probably already know how to play 2048, but if you don’t, here are the most basic rules. Note that this is the gameplay of the official version of the game, but there are also many plagiarism, clones, and even predecessors. Many of them have different game rules.

  • Swipe the screen up, down, left or right to move all the numbered squares in the respective direction. Each tile will move in that direction until it hits a wall or another tile (you need to press the arrow keys in the desktop version).
  • Each time you move, a new cell numbered 2 or 4 will appear in an empty position according to the most recently moved row or column.

Try to reach the number 2048. When you move two squares with the same number to touch each other, they merge into a new square whose value is equal to the sum of those two squares. For example, two 2 squares will merge into a 4 square. The goal you need to try to achieve is to make a square that reaches 2048.

Pause the game and calculate first. You can quickly get caught up in the game and try to move as fast as you can. If you want to have a higher chance of winning, you should try to restrain yourself and only move when you are ready. Calculate ahead and try to imagine what the board will look like after you make your next move, or at least guess what will happen to some important squares.

Squeeze into the corner. A popular way of playing used by many players is to create a large square at a certain corner. It doesn’t matter which angle you choose, but you need to stick with it once you’ve made your choice. [1] X Research Source

  • This play is most effective when that corner is part of the row that you are keeping filled. That way, you can move the squares from left to right without affecting your high value square.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/6/66/Beat-2048-Step-5-Version-5.jpg/v4-728px-Beat-2048-Step-5- Version-5.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/6/66/Beat-2048-Step-5-Version-5.jpg/v4-728px-Beat- 2048-Step-5-Version-5.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Seize the opportunity to combine multiple squares. If you see a long line of identical tiles, it’s usually a good idea to combine all of those tiles to get more space on the board. [2] X Research Source

Alternately click the top and right. A basic way of playing is to alternate clicking the top and the right until there are no more moving squares. When this happens, you need to click on the left side, then continue to switch back and forth between clicking above and right. This is not a guarantee that you will “break the island” – in fact, it is often difficult to win playing this way. However, this is a way to help you get a pretty high score, and also a quick way to break your previous record. [3] X Research Sources

Swipe left and right multiple times (this step is optional). Start a new game, then quickly swipe left and right. Continue until you see as many rows of 2s, 4s, and 8s. While you don’t have to take this step to win, you usually have the edge and get bigger squares faster. [4] X Research Sources

Creates a high value square in the corner. Combine the original squares into 16 or 32 tiles, then corner them. The purpose of this step is to keep the square in place for as long as possible, then gradually create a larger square. [5] X Research Sources

  • This way of playing is applied in the world record of 2048 game to create the last square in 1 minute 34 seconds. [6] X Research Sources

Fills the row containing the high value square. Example: If your high value corner is in the upper right, fill the entire top row with squares. Alternating between the two directions in the corner (“top” and “right” in this example) is a good way to do that. Once filled, you can move left and right multiple times without moving the high value square off the corner.

  • Keep an eye on this row and fill in the gaps that appear whenever possible without moving the corner tile.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/6/62/Beat-2048-Step-10-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Beat-2048-Step-10- Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/6/62/Beat-2048-Step-10-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Beat- 2048-Step-10-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser -output”></div>”}
Focus on merging small squares. For most of the game, it’s more important to make 8, 16, and 32 tiles than just focusing on a big value square. Ideally, those mid-range squares are near the corner square you selected. This helps you chain-reaction combinations, then get closer to your goal than just focusing on creating a single square of great value.

Free up small, stuck squares. Things often don’t work out perfectly, and you may end up in a situation where squares 2 or 4 are stuck between squares 256 and 64, or they’re in not-so-favorable positions. This is the time when you need to pause the game and think carefully about each move to free that small square. There are quite a few ways to do this:

  • Select a tile next to the stuck square, then plan to combine them. If it’s a large square, you may need to calculate several moves ahead of time to get it all going. Once there’s a square of the same value right next to it, swipe so that the tile you’re going to combine moves.
  • Another way is to try to make space in the row with the small square stuck, then move left and right until it is on the combineable square. This method is usually not very effective if there are too many squares on the board.

Move the corner square when you have to, then return it to its original position. In most games, there will be a time when you are forced to move the square in the corner to another location. [7] X Source of Research You should observe first to know which move is most beneficial. Swipe in that direction and then immediately swipe back so that the high value square returns to the corner.

  • In some clones, you can move aimlessly and any square will still appear. In this version, you usually never have to move your square from the corner, but sometimes it’s still necessary if your screen is in danger of filling up.

    Keep trying until you win. You still need a bit of luck to “break” this game, so don’t expect to win the first time. If you are forced to move the square in the corner and unfortunately a new square appears in the same corner, the chances of success will be much lower. You can still win if you solve five or six empty squares, or in case your highest value squares are 64 or 128. [8] X Research Source If high value squares More often than not, you have little chance of escaping this irony. [9] X Research Source
  • Advice

    • If you have already “broken” 2048 game and want to overcome the more difficult challenge, try to create 2048 square with the lowest score possible. Since each move increases the score, this is really a challenge if you want to reach 2048 with the fewest moves. [10] X Research Source
