Help people in everyday life every chance you get. While it’s not a big deal, being kind to each person you meet can go a long way in helping the community. Every time you have the opportunity to help someone in the community, do it right away and don’t forget to smile.

  • For example, you might help an old man cross a busy road.
  • Give a homeless person a few tens of thousands of dong. Better yet, you can invite them to a meal and chat with them.
  • If you see someone struggling to open a heavy door or agonizingly carrying a box, go help them.

Listen to the people around you and show empathy. The relatives, friends, and colleagues around us are all members of society, and you can contribute to the community by giving people spiritual support. Or, if you need to talk about a sad experience with someone, have them share theirs too.

  • For example, if you have a co-worker who recently lost a loved one, express concern by saying something like, “My condolences to you. If you need any help, just tell me.”
  • If a classmate is having a hard time at school, you can encourage him or her, such as, “This semester has been so hard. Do you want to talk to me about some subjects? Let’s go get some coffee!”

Mentoring children in the community to build good character for them. If you are an adult, you must have accumulated many years of knowledge and experience that many young people can learn from. Orientation programs work for this purpose and allow their predecessors to pass on their personal experiences and expertise to young people who are struggling in some way in their lives.

  • For example, you can tutor a young child in your area through the Big Brothers or Big Sisters program. Many social or religious organizations also support such orientation programs.

Volunteer at a community organization to help people in society. Volunteering is a great way to interact with the local community and help those less fortunate than yourself. You only need to spend a little time each week, but what you do can make a huge difference in the lives of those around you. [1] X Research Resources Depending on your interests, you can:

  • Do charity at a shelter or homeless kitchen.
  • Volunteer at a Red Cross or religious organization.
  • Contribute to the construction of houses of love in the local community.
  • Volunteer work in hospitals.

Donate blood if you want to help those who are injured or sick. People who are seriously ill or have an accident often need a blood transfusion, and you can help people by donating your blood. Many hospitals have regular blood donation programs, and local blood banks are always inviting newcomers to sign up and donate blood. [2] X Research Source

  • You can go online to find a suitable place to donate blood by entering phrases like “where to donate blood”.

Participate in local and national elections to improve social life. If you live in a democratic society, voting is a very important thing to contribute to the community on a national and regional scale. To be a responsible voter, you need to learn about voting and candidates first and vote for the candidates and policies that you believe are in the best interest of society.

  • For example, you can research and vote on local issues that often go unnoticed such as taxes, city management, and local regulations.

Find a job where you feel meaningful in the community. Working is also a great way to contribute to society, either directly or indirectly. [3] X Research Sources Rosenberg, Amber. Personal interview. 26 February 2020. If you’re interested in doing a job that directly benefits the community, you can choose careers that involve supporting locals or developing infrastructure. For example, you could work as a firefighter or construction worker, as an employee of an animal shelter or as a public servant.

  • If you already have a career, look for ways to help the community through the agency you work for, such as volunteering or community outreach opportunities. [4] X Research Source Rosenberg, Amber. Personal interview. 26 February 2020.

Pay your taxes in full and on time if you can. If you have a job, paying taxes is one of your social obligations. Local, city, and national governments use tax dollars to repair infrastructure and pay salaries to officials. You can file your tax return through many online sites. Many accounting firms also provide tax preparation services, and some even allow you to file for free.

  • If you can’t afford to pay your taxes, talk to an accountant to see if they have any suggestions for deferring taxes.

Contribute to community improvement

Support a charity through a financial donation if you can. When you donate to a local or global charity, you are using your money to help society and the people who live in it. Charity is also a way to set an example for those around you, as your actions will further inspire them to do the same. [5] X Research Resources You can make a donation to the Red Cross, Blue Dragon Children, Vietnam’s disability charity or other charities.

  • You can contribute other things than just money. Many charities also donate things like vehicles or clothing.

Teach people in the community skills that are useful for their lives. Providing people with knowledge and skills for everyday life is also a great way to contribute to the local community and improve social life in general. [6] X Research Resources You can help friends, neighbors, local children or people you don’t know at all by teaching them practical ways to deal with common problems.

  • For example, if you see someone messing around with a stalled car, show them how to start the car.
  • Or, teach the neighborhood kids useful survival skills. Teach the kids how to pitch a tent, light a fire, or sharpen knives.
  • If you’re a mechanic — or just someone who’s good at fixing things — you can show a few neighbors how to change wheels, fix bicycles, or simple machines.

Get a higher education so you can use that knowledge to help others after graduation. It’s not selfish at all if you put in the effort to get a good education, whether at the high school, college, vocational or graduate level. Education allows you to contribute to society both locally and globally in a way that you would not otherwise be able to do without a high level of knowledge. [7] X Research Sources

  • For example, you could study horticulture or agriculture in college or university. After graduation, you can return to the hometown where you were born and raised to help the people there develop farming.
  • Or, you could study for a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology, then open a counseling office for people struggling with negative thoughts or mental health problems.

Share expertise to give back to the community. Regardless of your formal training, you probably have some knowledge and skills that will be useful to everyone in your community. [8] X Research Resources You can hold lectures at your home about financial management, for example. Or, you can also contact the public library and ask if they can arrange for you to lecture on paying taxes and saving money.

  • Sharing expertise is an effective way to use your advanced education for the benefit of society.

Environmental protection

Cut down, reuse and recycle whenever possible. We all live in natural ecosystems, and protecting the environment where you live is an essential part of contributing to society. Please recycle plastic and try to use less plastic in general. Remember to put recyclable materials (such as bottles or food containers) in the recycling bin instead of in the trash. [9] X Research Source

  • For example, if your clothes are worn out, you can repair them instead of throwing them away. You can also donate your old clothes to charities.
  • Avoid buying products with non-biodegradable materials, such as foam.

Save fuel by cycling weekly or using public transport. Driving alone while commuting wastes fuel and contributes to environmental pollution. Try to save as much fuel as possible by carpooling or riding a bike instead of a car. You can also use public transport like buses or trams to help cut down on fuel burn in the city.

  • When you reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment, you also help preserve the health of people in the community.

Plant trees in public places to clean the air. Trees not only bring beauty to the neighborhood but also help to make the environment cleaner. You can buy seedlings at nurseries and gardening centers. Plant trees in the spring when your area begins its growing season. [10] X Research Source

  • If you’d like to plant a tree in a public park (or in an area owned by the city), you’ll need to contact the city government and fill out the necessary paperwork.
  • If you’re more careful, you can also find out which plants are native to the area.

Use solar energy to supply electricity in the house. Instead of using the grid electricity of large companies that produce electricity by burning fossil fuels and polluting the air, you can power your home with solar batteries. These panels can be installed on roofs and generate electricity that can supply 100% of your home’s electricity needs. [11] X Research Source

    • If you’re interested in buying solar batteries, go to large stores that sell home appliances. You can also find contractors in your area to hire them to install.
