It is very easy for us to unintentionally judge others without knowing it. Maybe you think you know how people should look, think, and act. Usually it’s okay to think you know everything, but a judgmental attitude can prevent you from making friends and trying new things. Fortunately, you can learn to be less judgmental by changing your perspective, opening your eyes, and keeping an open mind.

Positive thinking . A negative mindset can lead to judgmental thoughts. You should try to look at the positives in every situation instead of just focusing on the negatives. Separate people’s actions and personalities. Sometimes you see people doing unacceptable things like stealing other people’s lunch money or interrupting their peers. Be aware every time you are judging someone. Prevent the seeds of judgment in the first place by being aware of times when you have negative thoughts about others. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Each person is a unique individual with different talents, skills, personalities and life experiences. In addition, people shape their personality from upbringing, including where they grew up, how they were treated, and their living conditions. When learning about another person, try to imagine yourself in that person’s shoes. Even though you may not have the same choices as them, accept that they are entitled to make their own decisions.   • For example, someone you consider annoyingly clingy may have spent a childhood without parents. Or you think someone doesn’t have the will to study, but maybe they are prioritizing making money to support their family.

Find common ground. Every time you find yourself trying to judge someone who isn’t like you, look at the things in common instead of focusing on the differences. Be grateful for what you have. Be thankful for the good things in your life, especially the things that have helped you get where you are. Appreciate your friends, loved ones, health, opportunities, relationships and the way you were raised. Show kindness. Compassion is the opposite of judgment. Instead of criticizing and thinking badly of others, try to empathize with them, visualize their thoughts and feelings. Step out of your comfort zone. Take the initiative to find new experiences, different from what you normally do. The initial experiences can be quite scary, but can also be very exciting! Play with different groups of people. You will have the opportunity to open your mind if you try to interact with people who are not like you in many ways. Attend an event that you wouldn’t normally find appealing. Choose an activity that you would normally consider boring, stupid, or silly. Challenge yourself to step in and participate.   • Talk to people in those places and try to get to know them. If there comes a time when you suddenly feel like judging someone, imagine how you would feel if they judged you, especially when you wouldn’t normally be in their shoes.

Stop the habit of insisting on being right. Everyone has his or her own view of how the world should work, and many times those views are contradictory. Don’t judge people by their appearance. It is true that people often express themselves by the way they dress, but this does not mean that you can tell everything about a person by their appearance. Stop “labeling” others. You can’t fully understand a person by the characteristics you attribute to them. In fact, this also limits your view of that person. Try to see each person as an individual. Learn to ignore their appearance or the people they hang out with, focusing on their own stories before jumping to conclusions.
