Ingredient

  • 1 bunch of fresh asparagus (or depending on your needs)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper (enough to taste)
  • Minced garlic and/or Parmesan cheese (if desired)
  • Lemon juice or red grape vinegar (if desired)

Steps

Preparing for Processing Asparagus

Preheat oven to 230°C. While waiting for the oven to heat up, you can prepare the asparagus.
Wash the asparagus. You can keep the small bamboo shoots for other recipes – as the small stems will become smaller when baked. Therefore, large bamboo shoots will be suitable for this method of processing. [1] X Research Source
Cut away the hard part at the end of the shoot. You can use a knife to cut off 2.5 to 5 cm of bamboo shoots or break them by hand. When the hard part of the shoots is removed, the bamboo shoots will only have soft young stems.

  • Some people like to peel the body but others consider this step unnecessary. If you want, just peel off the body.

Let the asparagus drain if needed. To prevent grilled asparagus from becoming steamed, discard any excess water before grilling – this is a dry roast. Use a paper towel to dry the asparagus or roll it over with a clean towel.

Grilled Asparagus

Line a cookie sheet with foil. If you don’t have a cookie sheet, you can use a baking dish. When using a baking dish, you don’t need to use extra foil.

  • Simply throw away the foil and skip the post-baking clean-up to focus on the delicious food that’s coming out of the oven. That way, you will have delicious food without much cleaning up.
Coat asparagus in olive oil to coat evenly. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of extra virgin olive oil at this step. If you don’t find enough oil, you can add more until the entire bamboo shoots are covered with oil.

  • Do this step in the baking tray! Because it is not necessary to dirty another plate. When you want to coat the asparagus with olive oil, use a fork or chopsticks to roll the asparagus back and forth. Try to make the olive oil adhere evenly to the asparagus.
Place a layer of bamboo shoots on a baking tray. Do this so that the bamboo shoots are evenly grilled. If the bamboo shoots are stacked, the bamboo shoots will not ripen evenly.
Sprinkle salt, pepper and some other seasoning according to taste on bamboo shoots. If you have fresh ground sea salt and black pepper, all the better. When you add fresh spices, the taste will be even better.

  • Minced garlic is also recommended to be added to grilled asparagus. If you like the smell of garlic, add some minced garlic cloves to the dish.

Place the tray of asparagus in the preheated oven. Bake the bamboo shoots for 8 to 10 minutes. If you are using asparagus with large or heavy stems, it will take longer to bake. Pay attention during baking and check the taste after 10 minutes.

  • It’s best to place the tray of asparagus on the grill in the middle of the oven. Because the temperature is most evenly distributed in the middle area of the oven.
  • After half the time of baking, use a fork to flip the asparagus or shake the baking tray.
  • Some recipes even suggest baking the bamboo shoots for 25 minutes. [2] X Research Source This depends on the size and quantity of the bamboo shoots.

Enjoy food

Remove the asparagus from the oven. Asparagus is ripe when the stem becomes pliable but not completely soft. Then, arrange the grilled asparagus on a serving plate.
Garnish more dishes. Sprinkle some grated Parmesan over the asparagus or shake with lemon juice if desired. Add a few slices of lemon to make the dish look nice.

  • You can substitute with red grape vinegar. If you haven’t tried this vinegar yet, give it a go. You will feel its special taste.
  • Enjoy grilled asparagus warm or at room temperature. The special thing about this dish is that when cold it is still delicious. Keep leftovers and you can eat them right out of the fridge.

    • Store asparagus in an airtight container. Bamboo shoots will keep for 1 to 2 days. You can combine asparagus with other recipes – asparagus can be combined with many spices.
