Identify the things that might tempt you and which weaknesses have caused them to affect you. Everyone has their own temptation. So, consider what personality traits lead you to those temptations – maybe you’re full of insecurities or you’ve never been satisfied with yourself. Perhaps you are the type of person who prioritizes pleasure over responsibility. No one is like anyone. Your temptations may be similar to those of a relative, friend or acquaintance, but it is also possible that the things that tempt them are completely foreign to you. A priest, counselor, or someone you trust can help you uncover the triggers and limitations that allow temptation to thrive.

  • According to Catholicism, although Jesus never sinned, he was also manipulated. (Hebrews 4:15) [1] X Research Resources Take some time for self-reflection and consider what tempts you.
  • If you’re having a hard time identifying temptation, start by taking a look at the things in your life that are causing you sadness, then try to figure out what train of thought or habit leads to it. For example, you are dating a girl but always feel a heavy pain in your heart because you often flirt with other girls. Ask yourself, “what thoughts and behaviors led to this?”. After reflection, you may discover, that you are always worried that you are not attractive enough. The source of the temptation to flirt with other girls is your insecurity.

Set reasonable goals to resist temptation. The goal you set to resist temptation should be based on the fact that, as a human, you cannot be perfect. Don’t set unrealistic goals like “I will never commit a crime”. Doing so will only disappoint yourself sooner. Realize that it’s hard to avoid (and sometimes repeat) guilt. Set realistic goals that take into account the above factors.

  • For example, if you skip your child’s recital just to stay home to watch TV, then make it a goal to not miss your child’s show again (except in an emergency) and reduce TV time each week to 4. language. This goal is completely within reach.
  • For some serious sins, it is paramount to set a zero-tolerance goal – for example, we must clearly never commit murder or adultery. These sins can cause irreparable damage to the lives of others.

Know responsibility. [2] X Research Source It is not natural that people have free will. Do not squander the opportunity to act decisively against temptation just by allowing it to run its course! Get up and take action now . Push your goals forward so you don’t have time to fall behind. The hardest part of overcoming temptation is just beginning. Don’t give up on a journey before it even begins just because you tell yourself you can’t do it.

  • According to Christianity, when Jesus died, He gave sentient beings the power to resist evil forces. (Mark 16:17) [3] X Research Source So do not be afraid and run away from the dark forces of life. With true effort and faith, nothing is beyond your reach.

Turn your back on past mistakes. The only thing about yourself you can’t change is the past. Don’t let what happened before overwhelm you. The only right way is to move forward, towards the right path. If the past is flawed, acknowledge the mistake but don’t feel overly guilty. Let’s rebuild from those mistakes. Try not to make that mistake again. Even if you re-offend, you will continue your journey of self-improvement from past mistakes.

  • If you can’t do that, sincerely ask God for forgiveness. God has boundless mercy. In his eyes, once you’ve been forgiven, you’ll be as clean as if you hadn’t committed any sin in the first place:
    • Islam: “And whoever does evil or does injustice to his soul, ask Allah’s mercy, he will find Allah the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Quran 4:110) [4] X Research Sources
    • Islam: “Abu Qatadah narrated: The Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, commanded him, ‘Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah’s goodness, but Allah Almighty will take your place. replace it with something better.'” (Musnad Aḥmad 22565, Book: Sahih) [5] X Research Source
    • “And said: I will remember their iniquity no more.” (Hebrews 10:17)

Fight temptation with positive behavior

Avoid situations and people that are likely to lead you to sin. Certain people, places, and situations can make you more likely to commit a crime. There are sins that are impossible to commit without a certain tool, setting, or person. Make sure to stay away from things that lead you to sin. If you’re addicted to drugs, stay away from areas of the city where drugs are sold. If you hang out with friends who make you go crazy, don’t hang out with them. By staying away from triggers, you’re reducing your chances of making a mistake and giving yourself less chance of tripping.

  • It is often a good idea to help others overcome their sins. However, if you yourself are struggling with your own temptations, then contacting them will make the situation more difficult. Wait until you are in control of yourself and then think about helping others.
  • Reduce the source of temptation in the home. For example, throw all your existing pornography away.
  • In some cases, you may need to eliminate other distractions in your home. For example, cut ties with your roommate if they frequently pull you away from the responsibilities you carry.

Call for help. There is no shame in having to rely on others. If you find it difficult to resist temptation, don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted priest, leader/scholar, missionary, pastor, counselor or friend. Accepting help is a strong, sensible act, and part of the purpose of these people when you are with you is to help you through a difficult time.

  • Some temptations (like watching pornography) are not necessarily socially sinful behaviors, even though they are. If you need help to overcome such temptations, you will need to find a priest, missionary, leader, etc., rather than a lay person.

Make yourself busy. Grandparents have a saying “Immortal living is unwholesome”. If you’re busy with good deeds, virtues, or healthy hobbies, you’ll have less time to wander and less likely to be tempted into a moment of boredom. For example, dedicate yourself to work, study by working overtime, or sign up for tutoring. Spend some time learning a new instrument or language. If you have so much free time, do whatever you can to fill it up and bring yourself closer to God, or make you healthier, richer, or better.

  • If you can’t think of anything else you can do to fill the empty space, a good place to start is at a shelter, relief center or outreach center. Talk to a manager – there’s a chance they’ll use your unique talents to help those less fortunate in the community.

Be persistent. Unfortunately, temptations aren’t so easy to leave just because you choose to reject them. The temptation is still there. Sometimes, the moment you soberly resist temptation is when the temptation becomes stronger than ever. For example, if you decide to resist a chocolate craving, then 1-2 days later the craving will be stronger. It will take a while for the temptation to cool down – but there are also things that can never be forgotten. This doesn’t mean you should give up! This is a fierce battle. Don’t give up, no matter how many times you set back or re-offend. The more persistently you fight, the better your chances of overcoming temptation.

  • Never reward yourself with “rests” or “rewards” of guilt. Don’t get bogged down in instant gratification. It is an afternoon dream that covers your eyes, tricking your feeling that there is nothing wrong with this, even under the scrutiny of God.
  • Treat temptation like a bad habit that you need to break. Move toward forming “good” habits that replace old ones, by repeating good, virtuous behaviors.

Persevere in the face of temptation

Accepting temptation is hard to avoid. Know that, no matter how hard you try, a life without temptation is impossible. We will always, at some point, feel tempted – whether it’s something as innocent as making up excuses for being late or as serious as wanting to punch someone who insults you. It is also hard to avoid that at some point, we will give in to this urge. However , with effort, we can reduce the power of temptation. The battle against temptation will last a lifetime – be prepared to celebrate your victories and learn from your failures.

Don’t be discouraged by your own imperfections. Don’t fall into the trap of self-humiliation. We are not pathetic or obnoxious just because we have fallen. God will always forgive. Do not torture yourself, no matter how many times you fall into temptation. [6] X Research Resources Use your time more wisely by sincerely praying for God’s forgiveness and overcoming your mistakes.

  • “Say: ‘My servants! Those who have transgressed their souls, let not despair of Allah’s Mercy. Surely Allah will forgive all sins. Indeed, He is the One. The Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.'” (Qur’an 39:53) [7] X Research Source

Study the scriptures. The Bible is full of stories, teachings, and maxims we can draw upon whenever we need to turn away from the temptations of sin. The nature of sin and temptation is a topic of discussion throughout the Bible – flip through passages like Romans 7:18 for a clearer view of the agony of resisting temptation: “Indeed, I know that there is no good in me—meaning that in my mortal and sinful body there is no such thing as good. I want to do what is right, but I don’t.”

  • Many of the idols revered in the Bible have also struggled against temptation (and often failed). Adam and Eve committed their first sin by eating the forbidden fruit. King David, one of the most important figures in the Bible, also succumbed to temptation when he killed a soldier to steal his wife. Reading the Bible will help you understand that even great men and women struggled—and overcame—their temptations.

By reading the Bible, you can attest to what the Bible really teaches. Zachary Rainey, the ordained minister, said: “Some people are led away from the faith by lies. There will always be someone who misrepresents Jesus or the church or the Bible. So Always ask questions when you hear suspicious words, don’t rush to assume it’s true.”

Remember to put your trust in God even when you are led away. Overcoming a certain dirty temptation is very difficult. They can easily cause us to lose hope and even begin to believe that we have been abandoned by God. But nothing beats the truth. Thoughts like “Life is so difficult, God must hate me” are completely false and toxic. Every time you were led, God tried to pull you back there. God always wants you to succeed. He wants nothing more than for you to overcome temptation. So, when God poses a challenge, don’t lose faith in Him. Instead, stretch yourself through the challenges He presents.

Imitate the prophets. They live a pure life free from dust. They dedicate their lives to serving others. They practice nonviolence, even though they must be willing to endure suffering. They endure temptations but also resist them moment by moment. Let’s strive towards that realm – it is difficult for ordinary people to achieve, but with the determination to try, we have also become much better.

    • In the Quran praised Muhammad: “And verily you are endowed with noble qualities.” (Quran 68:4) [8] X Research Source
    • Catholics believe that it is through His great sacrifice that we are cleansed of all sins: (1 John 1:7) “But, if we walk in the light as He is in the light, He himself is in the light.” light, we are friends, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sins.” If you are interested in the salvation of Christ, you can contact your local priest, pastor, or missionary.
  • Advice

    • Always have faith and persevere in loving and forgiving everyone.
    • Every time you fail a temptation, pray. Pray for forgiveness, keep standing up and live your life with Jesus. When He forgives you, He completely forgets all the mistakes you have made.
    • Pray before making a decision.
    • Pray. Follow in God’s footsteps and avoid troublesome or negative people in your life.
    • You can do anything because Christ has strengthened you. His name is absolute power. Whenever you want to get rid of any emotion, any doubt, any illness, speak up with sincerity. Quote from the bible, dispel temptation and use “in the name of Jesus” or “By the blood of Jesus”. Recite these words with confidence!
    • Let your thoughts be filled with the image of God.
    • Remember, “Therefore now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!” (Romans 8:1)
    • Always forgive and have strong faith in God, Father. For whoever sins will not be punished, and whoever asks for forgiveness will be forgiven.
    • If you have kept and accepted the image of God in your life, temptation will no longer stop you from reaching heaven. That doesn’t mean the difficulty has lessened, it’s just that you still have a guaranteed belief to accompany you.
    • Talk to God/Jesus/Saints/or whoever holds the charge in heaven. You don’t have to pray the whole prayer with your hands folded, just like talking to a friend. Example: Thank God for the beautiful weather.
    • Ask for mercy from God, even if you feel you have done nothing wrong . Because it is possible that you have accidentally made a mistake somewhere without knowing it.

    Warning

    • Don’t dwell on past mistakes. Burying yourself in sins that have already been pardoned by God will only make Satan’s influence over you stronger. Forgive yourself and move on. Remember the aphorism in chapter two, it is said that whoever confesses his sins before God will receive mercy from God and will no longer see death.
    • We must have confidence in the teachings of the Lord. At 1 Corinthians 10:13 it was said that God will not put any test beyond man’s strength. Even if you stumble, you should know that victory is still possible.
