Hide favorite treats for parrots to find. Conures love to rummage through food. Even though they are happily fed, they still spend a lot of time searching for their favorite foods in the cage. You can put branches and leaves in the cage with toys and food hidden inside to create a natural environment for the parrots to forage. To keep your parrot busy, you can also hide toys and treats inside items such as: [5] X Research Source

  • Breakfast cereal box
  • Newspaper roll
  • Logs with holes drilled

Rotate new and old toys. When you see parrots stop playing with toys, it’s time to give them new toys. Don’t rush to throw away old toys. Take it out of the cage until your parrot gets bored with the new toy. Then you can cycle through the old toys. Conures will play with old toys as if they were new.

  • If your parrot doesn’t play with a new toy after a day or two, take it out and try it another day.
  • If the toy gets dirty after a while, you should wash it and make it new again to make it more attractive.

Let the parrot roam the house. Your conure will enjoy exploring your home. They may even follow you. Allow the parrot to go outside the cage for at least an hour each day. [6] X Research Sources

  • Always watch your conures out of their cages so they don’t get in trouble!
  • Ensure a safe indoor environment when letting your parrot play outside the cage. Close all windows and turn off all fans. Do not leave electrical cords or scented candles outside. [7] X Research Sources
  • Always watch your conure around small children and pets. If your pets are aggressive towards small animals, move them to another room.

Bathe the parrot. Conures love to be bathed every few days. Pour water into the bowl and put the bird in. Parrots will bathe themselves when entering the water. If your parrot doesn’t bathe on its own, splash it with water to encourage it. When your parrot is done bathing, wrap the parrot in a towel and gently pat it dry. [8] X Research Sources

  • You can use a plastic container or dog food bowl to bathe your parrot. The bowl should be large enough for the parrot to walk comfortably inside. [9] X Research Source
  • If your parrot doesn’t want to bathe, take it out and try again another day.

Keep your parrot outdoors under control. Birds often enjoy being outdoors. However, to prevent parrots from flying away, you need to control them. Tie the leash and have the parrot perch on your shoulder while holding the leash. You can also put them in the cage and take them out. [10] X Research Source

  • If this is your first time outside, your conure may be scared. You should only let your parrot out for a short time the first time.
  • Even with their wings cut off, conures can still fly away. You should always use a leash or put the bird in the cage when outside.
  • Let your parrot play in a covered hallway if possible. This way your parrot will get used to being outdoors and enjoy the fresh air without worrying about losing it.

Play peek-a-boo with parrots. Like children, conures love peek-a-boo. Hide your face behind a corner or something and let the parrot look for you, then come out and say “peep!” Before long, the parrot may be imitating you in hiding. [11] X Research Source

    • Make sure your bird has a similar personality.
  • Warning

    • Conure parrots bite. If bitten by a parrot, just get up and walk away. If the parrot is out, return it to the cage and don’t show any concern or give it anything.
