Before throwing a party, it’s probably a good idea to figure out how many pizzas you need. If you’re like me, then you know that more is better. However, if you want to know how many slices you can get out of a 10-inch pizza, this guide will be of some assistance.
A 10-inch pizza, which falls in the regular/medium pizza category, is typically cut into eight slices, which is ideal for feeding between two and four people at max.
Will a 10-inch pizza feed all of your guests, or will you have to go with something bigger? Or perhaps you’re wondering whether multiple small-sized pizzas are better than a single large pie. If so, you will find the answers in the following sections.
What Size Is a 10-inch Pizza?
When it comes to pizza sizes, bigger is almost always better. However, if you only have a few guests over, then you might want to choose a pie on the smaller side.
In general, a 10-inch pizza falls into the regular or medium pizza category. In my guide to 14-inch pizzas, I described that most large pizza chains follow the same sizing guide, which is:
- Personal—6 inches
- Small—8 inches
- Regular/Medium—10 inches
- Large—14 inches
- Extra-Large—16 inches and beyond
While the size difference may appear small (only a two- to four-inch difference between pizza sizes), you could end up spending quite a bit more if you choose the wrong pizza size, especially when you know how many mouths you are going to feed with a single pie.
How Many Slices in a 10-inch Pizza?
Regardless of where you order your pizza, you can most likely request that the restaurant cut your pizza in any way you like. Perhaps you want to split your pizza evenly between two people? Then you can get a full pie cut into two perfect semi-circles.
However, if you don’t ask for a specific slice count, most restaurant chains will cut a 10-inch pizza into eight slices, which, according to those restaurants, can fill the bellies of two to four people.
But is that really the case? Will your guests feel full after sharing a 10-inch pizza with each other, or should you pick up a second pie, just in case?
How Big is Each Slice of a 10-inch Pizza?
If you’re like me, then math can be boring. However, when it comes to figuring out how much pizza you will get per slice—especially when you have to compete with a large group of people to get a slice—then it’s important to figure out whether each of your guests is getting enough pizza to fill their stomachs.
In order to calculate how much pizza you will get per slice of a 10-inch pizza, we will have to calculate the pizza’s total volume. Assuming it’s a perfect right cylinder, we can get the volume by inputting the known variables into the following formula:
- Volume = π × Radius2 × Height
We know what the radius is (5 inches), but what about the height? On average, a pizza will measure between ½ and 1 inch. Assuming we’re using a pan pizza, let’s ignore the height of the crust and assume the pizza has a consistent height of half an inch across.
So, the volume of a 10-inch pizza will be:
- Volume = π × 52 × ½ = 36.27 cubic inches.
Let’s take that figure and divide it by eight since a 10-inch pizza is cut into eight slices.
- Volume per Slice = 36.27 cubic inches ÷ 6 = 6.05 cubic inches
So, each slice of pizza from a 10-inch pizza will contain about 6.05 cubic inches of crust, tomato sauce, and cheese, and whatever other toppings you have on your pizza. To put this into perspective, a single slice of a 10-inch pizza is about half the volume of a single apple (187 cubic centimeters or 11.41 cubic inches).
Regular/Medium vs. Large—Which Pizza Is Cheaper?
In my guide on 14-inch pizzas (might want to hyperlink to 14-inch pizza guide), I explained that a large pizza is a lot more cost-efficient than getting multiple smaller-sized pizzas after comparing personal (6-inch), medium/regular (10-inch), and large (14-inch) pizzas in regard to the cost per cubic inch of pizza.
To summarize, a large pizza is about 37% cheaper than a regular/medium pizza and about 55% cheaper than a personal pizza per cubic inch. However, that doesn’t tell the whole story.
One thing you should know is that while it’s true a large or extra-large pizza is cheaper than its smaller-sized counterparts, that doesn’t take into consideration the customizable crust options you can choose.
So, if you’re the type of person who enjoys stuffed crust over regular crust, getting multiple smaller-sized pizzas is the only way to enjoy more of it. That’s just something to think about the next time you want to order takeout for your diners.
What Was the Largest Pizza Ever Made?
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest pizza that is commercially available comes from the Moontower Pizza Bar in Burleson, Texas. However, one common feature you’ll find among former and current record-setting pizzas in terms of size is that they are rectangular in shape, and the Moontower Pizza Bar’s 8 × 2-2/3-foot pizza is no exception.
Now, let’s try to put that into perspective by calculating how many round 10-inch pizzas would equal the total volume of a single Moontower pizza. Assuming the Moontower pizza is 1 inch thick, we can calculate its volume by multiplying its length, width, and height.
- Volume Moontower = Length × Width × Height
- Volume Moontower = 96 inches × 32 inches × 1 inch
- Volume Moontower = 3,072 cubic inches
Meanwhile, the volume of a round 10-inch pizza that is half an inch in thickness is only 36.27 cubic inches.
That means eating a single record-setting Moontower pizza would be the same as eating 84.70 round 10-inch pizzas. That means it could feed between 21 and 42 people!
