As a producer of high quality Muaythai products, we are often asked how to best fill a punch bag. Up front, not with sand. If you were to to fill a 1.80m boxing bag with sand, it would weigh over 300kg! Ideally a bag this size should weigh around 60 – 77kg, also, if you were to fill a bag this size with sand it would be as hard as stone, completely useless and the hanging brackets would not survive for long.
But if you want to fill a boxing bag yourself, there are many good options. You can use seed, grain or rice for example, even plastic granulate is possible. But in our experience, using old cloth is the best choice. This is the way most bags are filled before leaving the factory. As such, bags filled like this weigh about 60kg and are ideal for training in all weight classes. But as most people don’t have old cloth just lying around, we recommend using old, used clothing, cut into small pieces. The ideal size to reduce old clothes down to is into pieces about the size of a banknote. It’s important to use small enough pieces of cloth and to fill the bag uniformly to avoid the bag deforming.
After a few months in use it will be necessary to top the filling up again. This should be repeated 2-3 times, after which the bag should maintain its ideal weight of around 50kg. The advantage of using old cloth pieces is that the bag doesn’t harden too much, stays in shape and is easy on your joints when training.
If you want to make your bag just a little heavier though, you can just add 10x small, sealed 1kg bags containing sand. Just space them out about every 15cm, in the middle of the bag is best. Don’t just pour loose sand into your bag as it will work its way down to the bottom of the bag, harden and make your boxing bag very heavy at the lower end.
The perfect filling for us is to first make an inner lining out of plastic or foam before filling the bag. If you choose to do this, make sure that you measure the correct dimensions first.
Punch it bags are 37cm in diameter. Also take care to seal the lining at the bottom of the bag, to avoid damage when filling. When you’re done, you can start with the cloth and small extra sand bags if you wish.
The advantage of this method is that the boxing bag maintains its shape and is evenly balanced. And soft on the outside, hard in the centre and ready for use. This also guarantees you safer training and the bag a much longer life.
Filling your own bag also means you get to save money, also delivery costs are lower. In general, around a third of the price of pre-filled boxing bags.
