I bought this crate for our new puppy that is a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. We met the parents and knew our girl was going to be huge, so I got the biggest crate for her comfort. I bought this one because of the price and because we needed a crate with a door on the side. Where we have it set up we are unable to use the door on the short side. The box it came in was extra large, super heavy and awkward to get up the front steps to my porch and then into my house, but at 5′ 5″ I managed to do it by myself. The crate was super easy to set up, it even came with the divider piece that is simple to install and we can slowly increase the inner space as she grows. The crate seems sturdy, we placed a piece of finished wood on top so we can use the area to put our cable box and my son’s Xbox, and we haven’t had any issues. I was worried the crate would scratch my hardwood floors, so I bought a small area rug, slightly smaller than the crate, turned it so the carpet side faces down and the rubber backing touches the bottom of the crate. This works perfectly so I can slide the crate out to clean behind it and I’m not marking up my flooring. Overall I am very pleased with this crate and we are looking forward to many years of use with our sweet little pup (and eventually the big moose she’ll grow up to be lol).
I recently purchased a second L-42″ crate. The brand was Paws and Pals. The quality of the wire guage was significantly inferior to the Frisco brand. I normally only engage the top latch when I place my dog in his crate, which is what I did when I placed him in the Paws and Pals crate, and he was able to escape. The larger the crate/dog, the stronger the wire gauge should be. I’d like to say that you get what you pay for but both brands cost the same. If I ever need a third crate, I’d buy Frisco all day long!!
In an attemp to be cost-conscious, I purchased this crate over a Mid-West crate. The last time I purchased a name brand crate it was even cheaper than this one was. Inflation has truly gone mad. Anyway, I was lured by the Chewy name being attached to this. Unfortunately, the craftsmanship is just not there. The top and one of the sides are slightly bowed in and there are gaps between the sides at the corners where the sides don’t meet properly (see pictures). The door does not swing easily (probably an artifact of the overall slightly wonky build). The worst part is that there is sharp, unfinished metal on the door that cut my hand while opening it.
I chose this create over a Midwest crate and I’m disappointed. The crate pan is to small and my puppy’s paws keep slipping out of the bottom of the crate. The pan is also warped so with every move that my puppy makes it slams against the crate making noise. I wanted to love this crate, but this could actually be a hazard if my puppy turns the wrong way with his paw sticking out.
It took me awhile to get it assembled as one of the panels was a tad bent into another. Maybe it got dropped in shipment? But that is now fixed. Otherwise it will be big enough to suffice. One thing I didn’t think about. I will be traveling with my dog in an older Honda CRV. I was putting it in the back in the collapsed state and discovered it won’t sit flat. My CRV was just not wide enough so Pup will be on a very slight angle when on the road. So before you order, measure the width of your car/SUV where the crate might go to make sure it fits. I’m giving it 5 stars for the ease in setting it up (after I fixed the little bend) and it seems very sturdy. The door latches look like they will hold up well.
Overall this kennel appears to be sturdy enough (have not used yet). But also, our dog is not an escape artist and enjoys his kennel. The only flaw is it arrived with the bottom tray cracked. Picture shown.
This is the second crate I have ordered from Chewy. The first one I donated because the tray was cracked when I receive it. This one is fine, besides the door is really tight when I open and close it, but it does the job so I will keep it for my puppy.
I have 3 of these now. Perfect size for my need at reasonable price. Fit side by side in a 2013 Ford Flex. I did use in a different configuration when the side door was important.
I first purchased a kennel for my puppy, but because of the size and shape, my tiny size puppy doesn’t seems buy it. Then I ordered this crate, with the bigger size and the shape of the crate. The puppy is doing much better in it. It’s a great size, though I tried to filled the blanket in it to occupy some space so make less room for the puppy to ‘play’, reduce the risk of accident. Rating it as 4 stars, as the door handle is not easy to use, maybe it’s the part is defected, as most of the time, it got stuck and took more time/strength to unlock it.
I bought this size crate hoping it would be big enough, my fur baby isn’t that big even though he’s part lab. I measured him as best as I could with him squirming and he measured 21 in high or there about and 42 in long or thereabout. The 42-in crate is plenty roomy for him I could have gotten away with the 36 inch if I really wanted to but I’m glad he has the extra room. The wire for the crate is kind of flimsy so if you’ve got a strong putt I would suggest buying one that has thicker wiring my fur baby almost got out of his crate the other day just by banging his paw repeatedly against the door. I also like that it has two doors, at least the one I selected does that way no matter which side he’s on he can be put inside of it.
