? @McChesney – Could you elaborate please? This sounds alarmist and if you’re really trying to make a useful point as opposed to just being provocative, it would be helpful to provide more evidence and context for the claim.
@emy82 – I also use Freestyle Libre sensors that a friend gets me (on a fairly regular basis), in my case from Sweden. I don’t even use the Freestyle reader (got an open-source app instead, which does the readings via my phone) so when I recently had a problematic sensor, I didn’t even get such a clear message indicating that the piece was faulty. However, it consistently read 25-35 points under my finger-prick number for the full two weeks I nevertheless wore it for.
I wondered the same thing as you and I suppose my friend could go on the Swedish site and follow the prompts there to get an issue recorded and see if Abbott would send a replacement. However, knowing that I am going outside of the official channels, I sort of just accepted the loss on that one and didn’t pursue it at all. If it happens again with another Freestyle sensor in the future, I might. I imagine you could do the same asking your friend to go on the French website originally used, but you do run the risk of being told that since you’re using the product outside its intended area, you are not eligible for full customer service.
I’m in France and I use Freestyle Libre. At the beginning, this happened to me several times. You need to have your friend call Abbott and they will replace it for you no charge. They will ask what happened and will ask that you send it back to them with all the packaging. (once I didn’t because I had thrown everything away and had no problem). They will ask for some of the serial numbers etc.
Did you know you can read on your smartphone instead of using the reader? I don’t have a smartphone but some people in my French diabetic group do and they enjoy using the phone.
good luck, I hope you enjoy the FSL. although I really wonder if it is worth it for you having to import it and having dexcom and other sensors available.
