Oven brats are an easy, quick meal that will make your mouth water. Bursting with flavor and a great source of protein and fat, these sausages are as filling as they are delicious!
Brats are one of my favorite things to grill. The little bit of extra charring gives them such a great flavor.
When I can’t grill them, I love to throw them in the oven. The oven brats brown up nicely and have a great texture. Plus they are so easy to make that you can enjoy them any night of the week!
And if you really love the flavor of the grill, you can throw them under the broiler at the end to give them a burst of charred goodness.
Oven Brats
When you can’t grill outside, the oven or air fryer is the next best thing. You can find my air fryer brats recipe here!
You can even use the oven broiler at the end to give them a bit of a charred outside as they would get on the grill.
My favorite brand is Johnsonville original brats. Compared to others, I find they have the best flavor.
But you can certainly get your favorite brand and cook them up following the instructions below.
How long do you cook brats in the oven?
Brats take 20 minutes to cook in the oven. I also like to broil them for an additional 2 minutes to get that charred taste similar to the grill!
When you bake them, preheat the oven to 400 and cook them for 20 minutes.
If you want to broil them at the end, you can place them under the broiler for about 2 minutes once they are cooked through.
How to cook brats in the oven
Here’s what you need to do to bake bratwurst in the oven.
Step 1. Prepare the brats
First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
As it heats, place the brats in a casserole dish. Make sure you leave a little space between them so they are not touching. This helps brown them on all sides and cook evenly.
Step 2. Bake the brats
Place the prepared dish in the oven and set a timer for 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, use tongs to carefully flip the brats and then bake for an additional 10 minutes.
You can serve as is or follow step three below.
Step 3. Broil the brats (optional)
For added flavor, you can turn on the broiler and place the brats under the broiler for 2 minutes or until they start to char.
Finally, serve with peppers, onions, or on a bun (if you aren’t concerned about carbs). I like to saute peppers and onions in a skillet while the brats are cooking in the oven.
What to serve with oven brats
Sauteed peppers and onions are my favorite side dish for brats. They are low in carbs and high in fiber, which makes them great for keto diets.
If you don’t follow a keto diet, you can serve them on a steak roll or other bun.
And of course, you can serve them with grilled veggies, your favorite keto-friendly sauce, or if you are not following a keto diet, french fries or potato chips.
