The rest of this article is going to bring you all the known and unknown information related to the upcoming season 3 of Dr.STONE. You’re going to find out about its potential release date next year, whether there is a trailer, what the story will probably be about, and much more about this intriguing anime series.
Dr.STONE Season 3 release date
We have said that Dr.STONE is a relatively popular fantasy shonen manga. The manga has just recently been completed, but the anime series still has to adapt some seasons before reaching the ending of the manga.
The first season of Dr.STONE aired from July 5, 2019 to December 13, 2019, with a total of 24 episodes. The second season, consisting of 11 episodes, aired between January 14, 2021 and March 25, 2021. A special episode is scheduled to be released in July 2022, and a third season is planned for 2023.
The third season of Dr.STONE was officially confirmed on March 25, 2021, right after the end of season two. At the Jump Festa 2022 event, it was confirmed that the third season would premiere in 2023.
Now, at this moment, we don’t have a precise release date for the show’s third season, but we assume that it might happen during the Winter 202/2023 or Spring 2023 season; early Summer 2023 is also a possibility, but we don’t think we’ll have to wait too long for the season to premiere.
In the meantime, we are also going to get a special episode titled Dr. Stone: Ryusui, which is set to air in July 2022. This is what we know about the series so far, and we are sure to update this article once more information comes in.
Dr.STONE Season 3 trailer
You now know all the facts and our thoughts related to Dr.STONE season 3, which means that you’ve probably deduced by yourselves that we already have a trailer for the third season of Dr.STONE. Contrary to common practice, the teaser trailer for the third season of Dr.STONE was released right after the second season finale, and you can check it out here:
The initial trailer did not reveal very much, we have to be honest, but it made the fans more than happy. We had to wait until December 2021 for a second trailer, which finally confirmed the release date for Season 3, as well as the release date for the special episode. You can check it out here:
Now, since the third season is still some months away, we’re certainly going to get at least one additional trailer for the upcoming show. It might appear right after the special episode airs in July this year, or later this year, but we assume that we are finally going to get a precise release date for the season in the next trailer.
Dr.STONE Season 3 plot
As we have said, the trailer released last year revealed that the new season of Dr.STONE would be adapting the “Age of Exploration” Arc. In this section, we are going to bring you a synopsis of the arc so you know what to expect.
Tsukasa agrees to be killed and frozen by Senku because it’s only fair after he killed Senku months ago. Senku builds a Tsukasa-sized refrigerator, and Mirai says goodbye to her brother.
Senku gathers the entire kingdom of science with the new people from the Tsukasa realm and tells them that they will go to the other side of the world: to the source of petrification. To do this, they need a boat and hold a boat design contest. It turns out that Magma is no longer interested in replacing Senku unless things get boring. He still wants to be village chief, though. Senku wins the boat contest and they start building the boat.
Needing a captain, Senku asks Minami to find him one, and they revive Ryusui. Full of longing, but apparently a very good captain, Ryusui trades places with Senku and tells him that he will be the captain as long as Ryusui gets the oil field they need to find to fuel the boat. Senku agrees.
An exploration team is formed to find the oil, but they immediately run into problems as the terrain has shifted too much in the last 3,700 years due to the eruption of Mount Fuji. Ryusui invents dragos, a type of currency, to pay workers who harvest hemp for cloth sails. They make cloth to build a hot air balloon to survey the land, and use the surplus to make clothes to sell.
The completed hot air balloon has room for three people, so Gen devises a plan to get Ryusui to pay them for the privilege of flying. Senku, Chrome and Ryusui take the maiden voyage, but get caught in a storm. Eventually, they land safely in the village of Ishigami. With the help of the hot air balloon and their scouts, they create a map of the surrounding area and discover new resources.
Needing food for the long voyage by ship, they decide to bake bread, as it keeps well, but none of them is a good cook and the result is inedible. They revive Francois, Ryusui’s butler, for this task. Francois gathers a few more ingredients and exceeds all expectations with the bread.
After Minami gives up her reviving fluid, she asks for something in return and Senku builds her a camera. She takes the first photo, Senku poses like Albert Einstein, then Ryusui and the others start taking land shots to find the oil field.
Looking for more food to satiate the hungry staff, Francois asks Suika and Chalk to help find truffles. At the same time, Kohaku scans their pictures for signs of truffles or the oil field. She finds oil, but they can not tell where it is. They use Sagara, one of the boars, to find the oil since the boar rolled in it before. They refine it and build a motorboat.
Senku’s group proceeds to test their motorboat shortly after the “insanely powerful” radio tower is turned on for the first time. The message that saturated the radio frequency of the kingdom consisted of a single word repeated over and over in Morse code: “WHY”.
The mysterious call shocks the members on the boat, as Chrome asks them to stop while Senku answers the person through her radio, calling her out as the source of the petrification. The signal immediately stops and the group can only speculate about who or what the signal came from.
Returning to Japan, the group informs their allies of the news. They are concerned about the mysterious transmissions. In fact, at the headquarters on Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, a meeting of the Five Wise Commanders is held about this new being called Why-man by Ryusui.
All the members come up with a theory. The group assumes that Why-man is an enemy, because the worst thing that can happen is that they get too prepared for someone who is actually an ally.
They build a radar device that Chrome repurposes to search for iron as their river runs low. They build a mine and minecarts. Roads are also built and transportation routes are laid out, but there is one problem: the ship cannot be built.
They are forced to switch to a smaller ship, which Ryusui designs as a model to help the builders. A year passes while the ship is being built, and on September 10, the Perseus is completed. The crew list is drawn up and the group sets off for the island where the ISS astronauts are stranded.
Dr.STONE Season 3 cast
Dr.STONE is a show whose main cast won’t be changing much until the final arc. Some new characters will be introduced, that is absolutely certain, and a lot of antagonists are going to disappear after their demise, with new ones appearing, but the main cast will remain – for the most part – unchanged until the very end.
This is why we think that the main voice cast, since that is an unwritten rule in modern-day anime adaptations, will return for the third season, but also for all potential future seasons.
We don’t have confirmation of that so we’ll have to wait a bit for it to be official, but we assume that most of the names in our table will return in future seasons of Dr.STONE:
Character | Japanese Voice Actor (Seiyū) |
Senku Ishigami | Yūsuke Kobayashi |
Chrome | Gen Sato |
Ginro | Ayumu Murase |
Kaseki | Mugihito |
Kinro | Tomoaki Maeno |
Kohaku | Manami Numakura |
Ruri | Reina Ueda |
Suika | Karin Takahashi |
Taiju Ōki | Makoto Furukawa |
Tsukasa Shishio | Yūichi Nakamura |
Yuzuriha Ogawa | Kana Ichinose |

Homura Momiji | Aki Toyosaki |
Will there be a Dr.STONE Season 4?
It’s a bit too early to discuss a potential season 4 of Dr.STONE at this moment, seeing how the third season has yet to be broadcast (we know that it is scheduled for a 2023 premiere), but from what we know about the anime’s success so far, as well as the structure of the manga, Dr.STONE is a likely candidate for a return, even after season three.
Namely, Dr.STONE is still nowhere near the manga’s ending, and as the seasons don’t have a large number of episodes, the producers have much more space for new seasons. There are numerous arcs after the upcoming “Age of Exploration” arc, which means that the producers are definitely going to have more material to adapt.
Seeing that Dr.STONE is quite popular and that it is doing well on the global scale, as well as taking into consideration the fact that the anime hasn’t adapted the whole story and that the upcoming third season won’t be wrapping things up, a fourth season is very likely to happen sometime in the future. But, we’ll have to wait for some official news to be sure.
