“Sam, can you grab the blue bottle?” Ponk asked, fiddling with a brewing stand and some other experimental equipment.
“This one?” Sam held up a bottle filled with dark blue liquid. Ponk turned around to check if he had the right one.
“No, the lighter blue one,” Ponk shook their head. Sam grabbed a different bottle from the shelf, and held it up. This time, it was filled with a sky blue liquid. Ponk nodded, and the warden walked over and placed it on the desk next to the brewing stand. Ponk poured the contents of the bottle into the top of the brewing stand, along with the green and purple bottles that were already on the desk.
“You really think this is going to work?” Sam leaned on the desk and watched the three potions fuse into one green liquid. Ponk took it out of the stand and turned to Sam.
“I think so. I hope so…” Worry slipped into Ponk’s voice. “I mean, I didn’t put 100% research into it, so what if, instead of gaining hearts you lose them? Or- or-” He was cut off by their lab partner placing a hand on her shoulder.
“Ponk.” Sam looked Ponk directly in the eyes. “You didn’t mess up. Even if your potion doesn’t work the way you intended, it’s not like it’s going to kill me.” Ponk sighed and nodded.
“You’re right. Here,” They handed the potion to Sam. They drank -about half the potion and set it back on the table.
“The flavor could use a bit of work,” They said. Ponk sighed. “But not all potions taste good, so-” He was cut off from trying to backtrack his sentence.
“Do you have more hearts than usual?” Ponk asked hopefully.
“I don’t think s-” Sam started coughing violently and fell to the ground.
“Sam!” Ponk dropped to his knees and put a hand on the man’s forehead. His temperature had dropped extremely low. Sam looked up at him, and Ponk noticed that his eyes now had a grayish tint to them. They frantically started thinking about what to do and how to help.
Okay, first I need to get him somewhere safe. Ponk picked him up and ran out of the experiment center as fast as they could with the weight of the other man on his shoulders. Ponk wasn’t thinking clearly, and she ran into Punz’s house. They threw both himself and Sam onto Bumpkin, Punz’s horse. The horse dashed towards Foolish’s summer house.
Tears spilled from Ponk’s eyes and latched onto the wind, where they flew behind the two and the horse. Foolish’s house seemed like it was millions of blocks away. As the horse went faster and faster, Ponk gripped onto Sam tighter to avoid him falling off. Finally, after what felt like hours, they arrived at the other man’s house.
“Hey, Ponk, what’s u-” Foolish started to say, but he was cut off.
“Foolish, I need you to build something for me,” Ponk said, worry clearly visible in his voice.
“What is it?” Foolish asked, a little concerned from the other’s tone.
“Hospital..” Ponk responded.
“A hospital? Wh…” The shark boy trailed off as Ponk moved to the side to reveal Sam, who by now was looking very ill. “Okay. You go back home and take care of him, I’ll go build it near the community house as soon as I grab the materials from my chest.” Ponk nodded and sped off back to their hermit hole. He put Bumpkin back in Punz’s house, then put Sam on his back and carried him to a spare bed. Ponk felt badly for taking him on the horse ride, but they were so panicked that it just kind of happened.
“Sam? How do you feel?” Ponk asked quietly after putting his partner on the bed.
“Cold… and my vision’s kind of blurry…” Sam responded, so softly that Ponk almost couldn’t hear him.
“Do you want anything..?” Ponk questioned. Sam nodded and put a hand on his stomach, indicating that they were hungry. Ponk turned and rummaged through some food chests before finding some raw chicken, which she then threw into the furnace to start cooking.
Ponk sat down on the floor next to the furnace and thought about what had happened. Where exactly in his potion making did he mess up? Then they remembered the overgrown vines that were hanging on the wall behind his experimentation table. Some of them must have gotten into one of the potions. Just then, a ding came from the furnace. The chicken had finished cooking. Ponk stood up and grabbed the chicken and walked back over to the bed.
Sam took the chicken from the other and started eating in small bites. Ponk sat on the floor again, but this time he leaned back onto the bed. They heard Sam finish the chicken and turn towards the side of the bed where Ponk was sitting. He turned around to face Sam, who was giving Ponk a look that he knew very well what it meant, and had seen many times before. He got up from the floor and climbed into the bed with Sam. The creeper boy was freezing cold, but they were under the covers, so Ponk didn’t really mind. Sam immediately latched onto Ponk and pulled them a bit closer.
“It’s not your fault, you know.” He said. Ponk turned around to argue, but the boy was already asleep.
