The Sailor Moons series influenced the entire anime world. Not just exciting and fun, it made its fans grow and mature.
The Sailor Team showed us how to be confident. It taught us the importance of friendship and love. Most importantly, it empowered women since it’s the first anime that is solemnly based on powerful female MCs.
It proved to us girls that we can be strong and tough, that we can rival any boy and still stay feminine and attractive.
The guardians became worldwide icons and legendary figures in no time. Their culture spread, their values touched the hearts of so many. The series saved the lives of so many.
We all thank the author, Naoko Takeuchi, from the bottom of our hearts for the gift she gave to the world.
As for the anime in itself, the 90’s seasons are a perfect representation of the manga. They follow the story to the letter. The animation is a bit sloppy, which can’t be avoided considering the year it was made in. But once you get used to it is pretty attractive.
HOW TO WATCH SAILOR MOON IN ORDER
Sailor Moon Release order
1. Sailor Moon (1992–1993)
Anime Storyline:
Usagi Tsukino is what you call a perfectly normal student, well, with some brain cells missing. She’s a complete klutz, can’t seem to be able to pass a simple test and omg does she cry a lot.
That mundane yet pitiful transformed when she saved the life of a cat with a crescent moon on its head. Luna, the cat said its name was, yes the cat said it… Luna also revealed that it was not a coincidence that they met.
Usagi is meant to turn into a Sailor Moon. Sailor Moons are guardians, each of them is assigned to protect a planet and the planet assigned to Usagi is, you got it, Earth.
Can’t believe they chose a failure for such an important job. At least they gave her power, better than nothing. She can transform using a staff, an absolutely cute costume comes as a bonus as well.
Her main role is to destroy the monsters sent by the Queen of the Dark Kingdom, Beryl. And on the side, she must also locate the princess of the Moon Kingdom who disappeared, the rest of Sailor Guardians that are dispersed of Earth, and finally, the Legendary Silver Crystal that will be the salvation of the planet.
A piece of cake right, especially for a bright person like herself (PS: hope you can tell that’s sarcasm).
2. Sailor Moon R (1993–1994)
Anime Storyline:
Usagi Tsukino found some comrades. They faced many battles and now they finally have some vacation time.
It didn’t last long until they had to report back to work. A dark omen is heading towards earth. An and Ail, two survivors of an extinct race of aliens have their eyes on the blue planet.
They want to restore their home by gathering the energy that resides inside the human body. In doing so, they will eventually kill the host and it will be the end of Earth.
Like that wasn’t enough of a problem to deal with, I mean it’s the future of the planet we are talking about, another threat has to appear at the same time. Just to maintain a reasonable level of excitement.
A young girl that came from the future is on the hunt for the foundation of the Guardians’ power to rescue her loved ones. But that’s just too easy, so to spice it up a little, another notorious group known as the Black Moon Clan are after the same thing.
Three threats at the same time and the leader of the Earth’s guardian is a klutz. We are doomed, aren’t we?
3. Sailor Moon R the Movie: Promise of the Rose (1993)
Anime Storyline:
The first Sailor Moon Movie is out! Although it aired at the same time as the second season, to enjoy it fully, it is preferable to watch the entire previous season before viewing it.
The movie’s plot goes like this: Mamoru offered a rose to a young child called Fiore. In return for his kindness, Fiore swore he would gather tons of different flowers and present them to Mamoru.
After many years, Fiore is heading back to Earth to fulfill his promise. Nah. I’m just messing with you. He has much more evil plans in mind…
4. Sailor Moon R: Special (1993)
Anime Storyline:
I don’t know about you but I absolutely love Specials. The plot isn’t related to the main story, so you can watch them whenever you like. No spoiler danger.
Each episode is unique and has its own timeline. They are very well made and super funny.
5. Sailor Moon S (1994–1995)
Anime Storyline:
Imminent danger avoided, the Sailor Guardians are doing a pretty good job. Some peaceful times are expected. At least that’s what they hoped.
They just begin to catch their breath when two new protectors awoke, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus followed by new life-threatening battles and incredibly difficult challenges.
The novice Guardians are looking for Talismans that can be found in the Pure Heart Crystals that dwell inside humans. Did anyone realize that everything that is needed in that series is thrown inside our bodies? When the Talismans are combined, they transform into The Holy Grail.
The Holy Grail is a legendary relic with unimaginable power and it will be the key for protecting the Earth, maybe indefinitely if they are lucky. One of them sure isn’t so we can scratch that idea.
Such a powerful item is sought by many like the Death Busters who are currently on their way to get it. You guessed it, their intentions are nowhere near noble and they must be stopped.
6. Sailor Moon S the Movie: Hearts in Ice (1994)
Anime Storyline:
Between the three Sailor Moon movies, Hearts in Ice and Promise of the Rose are sharing the first position with a 7.7/10 rating. As for my personal opinion, I found the first one much more exciting.
Hearts in Ice doesn’t follow the anime, just like the first one. You can consider it a side story. In this timeline, the Snow Queen Kaguya is planning to engulf the Earth in eternal ice.
But someone stole her show since Luna makes her first appearance as the main character. She falls deeply in love with a human called Kakeru. But Kakeru already has a girlfriend. Here you might believe that Luna might try to jeopardize their relationship, but lucky her she has been sent into space.
Kakeru left with a broken heart suffered from a severe sickness and Luna, stuck in the body of a cat, wishes to turn into a human to extend a loving helping hand (with no ulterior motives wink wink…)
7. Sailor Moon SuperS (1995–1996)
Anime Storyline:
This season focuses mainly on Chibi-usa and the Sailor Moon team of guardians. They are facing the Dead Moon Circus, an extremely strong and vicious new enemy.
Their goal is to put their hands on the Golden Dream Mirror. A mirror that has the ability to give the owner control over the world.
And guess where the pieces of the mirror are located. In the human body. With the help of the guardians of Earth and her newfound ally, Pegasus, Chibi-usa is planning on completely crushing their dark plan.
Some awesome power-ups are to be expected along with new special costumes. Does anyone feel the same Winks vibes as me?
8. Sailor Moon Super S Plus: Ami’s First Love (1995)
Anime Storyline:
Ami’s First Love is not one of the Sailor Moon seasons. It’s a foretaste of the Sailor Moon SuperS movie. You can consider it a mini animated movie special. It was based on the manga side story of the same name, Ami’s First Love.
Ami is competing with a classmate that she calls “Mercurius“. They have been sharing first place in all the schools’ exams since forever.
The tension between them was already high and the spirit, Bonnone attacking Ami made things even worse since she, of course, accused Mercurius of trying to sabotage her.
The Sailor Team saved the Earth many times, can they save a love story as well?
9. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie (1995)
Anime Storyline:
The 3rd and last movie of the legendary anime Sailor Moon. The movie is more popularly called “Black Dream Hole“.
Chibi-Usa finally gives back the floor to the actual main character Usagi. She was kidnapped by an Evil Madame Vadiane.
Vidiane is planning on cursing her by using a ritual to make her fall into an eternal dream, sleeping beauty style. The Sailor Teams have to venture into the Black Dream hole to pull her back to reality before it’s too late.
10. Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (1996–1997)
Anime Storyline:
Sailor Moon R was divided into two arcs just like this one.
The first arc is a filler arc with no relation to the main plot. The Sailor Team will deal with some unfinished business from the SuperS season.
The real action begins in the second arc. This part of the story will be faithfully following the manga. Usagi says her last goodbyes to Mamoru. He is moving to America to continue his education.
Seiya, Taiki, and Yaten are also known as Three Lights, an idol group that will be taking his place. Right at the bat, the newcomers will be facing one of the most dangerous enemies the Earth ever faced, Galaxia.
Galaxia doesn’t just want to claim the Earth, no that’s too puny for her. She wants the entire Galaxy to be under her evil control.
In order to accomplish her plan, she needs the Star Seeds and where do you find them? Inside humans once again. Will the boys be up to the challenge?
11. Sailor Moon Crystal (2014)
Storyline:
Also known as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal in Japan is an ONA. This season is a recap of the Dark Kingdom, Black Moon and Death Busters events but updated by modern animation. Thus, this season is divided into three arcs.
Of course, it’s much briefer and with fewer details than the original anime. The only positive point here is that there will be less fillers.
If you find that the series is too long to watch, watching Sailor Moon Crystal and Sailor Moon Eternal will be the solution although it would be a shame to miss out on the originals.
OVAs
1. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Memorial (1998)
Storyline:
5 OVA episodes narrated by different characters of the series.
12. Sailor Moon Eternal (2021)
Storyline:
Sailor Moon Eternal is the last season until now. It’s a recap of the Sailor’s Team adventure when they were up against Dead Moon Circus.
It comes in two arcs that are a continuation of each other.
Sailor Moon is nowhere near finished. More seasons are to be expected. The season that will be feathering Galaxia will be next.
Some unverified rumors also revealed that when the modern animation catches up to the old one, a new enemy will make his entrance along with an entirely unknown season. Let’s all hope that rumor soon becomes reality.
Comment Down Below
Don’t be fooled by the simple plot. This anime is mistakenly thought for kids, well, it is not. Fans come of all ages. From children to adults, they all fell in love with the beautiful Guardians of the Earth.
If you need proof I’ll be it. My mother was the person who got me to watch it since she was hipped about the season that came out in 2021.
As for the boys, I can imagine why you might be reluctant to start an anime dedicated to girls but the action is top-notch and the battle scenes are magnificent.
If you are a true anime fan, this series is a must-watch. I also recommend watching the old season instant of the modern one as they are much richer in content, much more faithful to the manga and reflect the vision of the author.
I hope this list will be of help in the new world you will be venturing in.
